Putting My Feet in the Dirt 16 and Prompt:Oasis

Ready?

Receiving the call with no prior message, I replied, give me five. By the way, where are we going?

The park.

Cool!

I was picked up with two grandkids and we were off to a park across town that has been redone. A huge center playground and available equipment all wc accessible! I could roll myself up to the top where there were partial permanent awnings. The fences for safety were metal, covered in heavy black rubber of some kind so they didn’t get hot. What a thoughtful feature. The slides were also made of a substance that remained cool even in hot sun. Great innovations!

At the mid stop to the highest point on the center attraction were built in drums, whistling whirlygigs and I had to try everything. Being able to push myself on the trails and paths was fun. There was a toy that had molded seats, held about four people that was wc level so of course I had to try it. My grandkids would run on the side and jump in.

If you’re feeling depressed, need a break from the office, whatever, try going to an oasis such as a playground and act like a kid again!

If the slide hadn’t been so high, long and curvy, I would have tried that too. I love watching the various looks on toddlers who ride with their parents for the first time on a big slide. Adulthood is sometimes a pita, and it’s invigorating to get that “I’m a kid again” feeling.

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 15 – Torturous Turnips

“What are these, white beets? I don’t even like red or purple beets!”

Mom replies to five year old helper: “They’re not beets, they’re turnips. They are sort of like potatoes with a little bite to them..” as she added them to the ham and vegetable soup. “With the onions and ham bone, everything practically tastes the same anyway.”

“Ham bone? You’re putting a bone in the soup? Yuck!”

“That’s enough helping me with dinner today, Mikey. Run outside to help your father.”

This my life. Smoothly going down like a warm brandy in your throat. The escalator going down is my life today.

Last night I didn’t know it would all change. Promises, feelings of attraction, passion, and hope. We had been together for six months, and in the beginning of what I assumed was a lasting relationship. I found out last night the escalation came to an abrupt stop when the power failed. I stumbled off the top of the stairs and lost my balance. My now lost love walked away leaving me stranded.

After a sleepless night I returned to our first meeting place. Was I wishing he would regret his decision and surprise me there? It was the coffee shop at the top of the moving stairway. I looked for him all the way up. Reaching the top, searching our initial meeting place, my hopefulness disappeared and I turned around to step onto the descending escalator.

Prompt 1: Mysterious

It was the first night of the dreaded initiation into the SMS group. Harry was a nervous wreck. Since Jerry joined the Solve Mysterious Stories group, Harry felt he’d made a mistake asking him. It was Harry’s idea, who joined after he lost a bet from his club of mystery buffs. How could he renege on the bet? Jerry wasn’t a mystery buff persay, but Harry begged him to go.

The night was almost completely black but they were carrying flashlights as they sneaked up close to the ominous building. The old church was supposedly haunted itself, but there was also a large cemetery alongside the main structure.

Both young men were called nerds by their fellow college students. This night gave them the opportunity to prove, at least to the club, that they were worthy. As they approached the church, eerie feelings crept up their spine. They were at the door, they just had to open it.

The old door’s rusty hinges creaked as in horror movie predictability. The inside was lit with one large candle sitting upon an ornate wooden stand at the altar. Slowly entering the two found their flashlights unusable. They huddled together as they walked towards the candle. A sudden wind from nowhere snuffed the candle out and they gasped in unison.

Darkness and silence suddenly disappeared with the appearance of a disco light ball and the sounds of “Thriller” over a loudspeaker. Shocked, the young men sheepishly joined in the laughter from their classmates.

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 14

The song I’ve always loved was based on a poem written by George M. Cohan, “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and here’s an excerpt:

Today is flag day here in the states. Last year I tried hoisting a flag on a pole attached to the wall on my patio. It is very windy here in Cheyenne and it ripped the holder out of the what I now know was a flimsy piece of plastic siding attached to nothing. My grandkids were over so we finally taped the flag pole to the column on the front of the patio with matching beige duct tape. It was great!

It was only an hour before I got a warning to take it down or I would be assessed a huge fee and possible eviction…..on flag day! Flag day, when we as Americans, should have the right and/or obligation to display such flag.

I was furious. Surrounded by fellow apartment dwellers consisting of mostly military, and first responders, I was incensed. Why shouldn’t I be able to display a flag to honor them with my respect? We took the flag down. We left the tape hanging there as a protest. I haven’t received a notice about the tape. If they want it removed, they can do it themselves. Said flag is standing in the corner of my bedroom. What a shame.

I wonder if I would get the same response if I bought a few pirouetting penguins to display on the patio? Probably not, but a hefty “pet fee” would be assessed for sure. They wouldn’t last long anyway, given the small space, heat, dryness, and exhaust fumes in the adjacent parking lot. What’s a woman to do?😳😎

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 12, 13

Cheating, yes, but I was gone for a couple of days.😳😎

Looking through an album for the photo of a quilt my granddaughters made in 2014 to raffle off at the Cancer Relay, I found this picture of my oldest son and his baby girl. Adorable if I do say so myself, and the grand baby isn’t bad either!☺️

Definitely a memoir and milestone.

Yesterday I was at the doctor’s office waiting, and was reading blogs on my phone. Luckily the office was empty except for me and my daughter as I read roseelaineblog.wordpress.com‘s Smile post. It was a selection of cartoons and I was laughing like a lyrical lush as I embarrassed myself guffawing over some of the funniest cartoons I’ve ever seen. I quickly sent them to my sister who was celebrating her 83rd birthday that day, all alone. She loved them also.

Some people have a knack or maybe it’s coincidence, fate, or the universe smiling down, to send, write, call or speak somehow to cheer you, just when you need it most. Thanks Elaine, good timing.
