Movie Monday

This week I give you an interview on the background of making the movie, “Born on the Fourth of July”. There is R rated language in the video, so be warned. I am a product of the sixties, and I believe in the point of this film.

*****

In the mid 1960s, suburban New York teenager Ron Kovic (Tom Cruise) enlists in the Marines, fulfilling what he sees as his patriotic duty. During his second tour in Vietnam, he accidentally kills a fellow soldier during a retreat and later becomes permanently paralyzed in battle. Returning home to an uncaring Veterans Administration bureaucracy and to people on both sides of the political divide who don’t understand what he went through, Kovic becomes an impassioned critic of the war.
Release date: December 20, 1989 (USA)
Director: Oliver Stone
Screenplay: Oliver Stone, Ron Kovic

My Two Cents

I have always supported and honored the military, and veterans. I have been alive through a few wars and of course it’s still going on, everywhere, it seems. I saw the results of heros coming home and the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans returning home–a home they should have been welcomed to, but were not.

I won’t get into all the details here, but I think their treatment then and even veterans today, is deplorable. There are organizations such as IAVA that are trying to remedy that. That is just one.

I encourage you all, take your children to the veteran’s hospitals near you, visit, talk to them, show your children what it is to be a soldier, what they have to sacrifice. Maybe if more people did this, the push for warring would diminish.

It’s hard to believe the concept of a world leader who has the ability to wield such powerful weapons has never served in the protection of his so called beloved country. This from CNN today:

Whatever your political beliefs, a hero is a person who puts their life on the line, away from everything they’ve known including family, to serve their country. John McCain was a hero and no president in their right mind should be allowed to criticize, belittle, or dismiss this fact. The idea he tweets is just dishonorable to the office of president.

Fandango’s Flashback Friday

Share Your World 8-27-18

Hi De Ho fellow citizens of the blogging world! How’s old WP treating you? I hope it’s just fine. Monday and it is getting cooler each week, thank you, thank you. I believe I have an outing on Thursday but plans may change, so you never know. I just go with the flow. And it flows rather quickly. Thanks again to Ceenphotography.com who is challenging us with another set of getting to know you questions and here are my answers:

1. Let me start by saying I love nuts of any kind and I’m not just talking about the weird humans kind. I find that even though I grew up eating walnuts, I’m now allergic to them, which is a pita because I feel they are a necessary ingredient in my banana bread, and other recipes.

2. I have two closet doors facing my bed. One is always closed, hoarding what used to be necessary items. The other door is partially open because of hooks holding a cloth shoe rack with pockets that hold most everything besides two pairs of shoes, such as gloves, scarves, etc.

3. I am usually on time. Being picked up by other people or a bus, I don’t have a choice. A couple of weeks ago I was being driven to Denver by my grandson, who is always early. We had to leave by five AM so I set my alarm for four. At five he knocks on my door and I’m fast asleep, having set my alarm for PM instead of AM. Luckily I could get ready in less than thirty minutes and we ended up early to our Denver appointment.

As ever it will be, I am so grateful to have a loving family. And my oldest sister (88) just got an email account. She’s a wonder, still as funny as ever. You can’t keep a good woman down.❤️

Daily Addictions Prompts Week 34

Looking at this week’s words, my spirit animal came to mind, the dragonfly. I have always been fascinated by them and have their symbol on my blogsite.

At dusk, dragonflies will eat those pesky biting flies and mosquitoes, as they flutter by your being. Their precious tiny body will approach but never bite you. Their mandibles are not strong enough to penetrate your skin. Being hatched under water, they live there for about two years, before emerging to fly, proving they are durable creatures. They have been known to migrate up to 11,000 miles. Their amazing unique ability to fly up and down, reverse in backwards motion, catch and devour their prey has been the envy of flight engineers for years. Companies have tried to make robot fliers resembling these creatures, but so far their efforts have gone awry.

I have always loved them and over the years, many changes, so chose them as my spirit animal:

Sunday Photo Fiction 8-26-18

It was completely vine covered, holding the deepest secrets of the church. Not even old Father Finnegan would enter this part of the sanctuary. The door had no lock but never needed one. All those who opened the door were either instantly drawn in, some literally sucked in a type of vacuum or shoved in by well meaning parishioners. I hesitate for a moment, in writing that, because personally, I believe they were only concerned for their own safety, not of the poor souls interred within the ivied walls.

The chapel in the town of Douganburg used to be a friendly warm place for visitors passing through. It was, until the elders of the church built an addition onto the main structure. The formerly welcoming church now had a feared and separate destination for the poor tortured people in the area. Persons were lured there and unceremoniously pushed inside the green covered addition, all the while unaware of its confinement.

The rumors spread of course, but most curious visitors never dared open the mysterious blue door. What happened inside the door remains unseen and unheard. A few unfortunate mindless and unwanted were also harbored there. Why it was added to the church is a mystery and what happens when a being enters has been a legend in the village for over a hundred years.

MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt- Sitting

Sitting here , who am I kidding? I’m always sitting, unless of course I’m laying, in bed, tossing about trying to sleep. Where was I? Oh, sitting, yes, it has been my lot in life for the past five years with the occasional tip over just to make life interesting. You only forget to put the brakes on once, well, maybe twice.

But I digress. Yes I love that phrase, because it is so typical of myself and people my age, right beside “in my day, or in the old days, we used to, that’s how it was”, etc. How irritating to use these terms unexpectedly. I think it comes with that horrid word “age”. The blue sky, sunny days, everything is roses people will tell you a long life is the dream, along with, at least you have your health, etc.

Back to sitting. The Prompt talks of getting from one place to another. Five years ago when I lost my husband to esophagus cancer I thought I don’t want to go anywhere. That lasted a few months and then my view changed. Too many memories and sad faces around me, I wanted to move. After eighteen months that happened. Does the phrase, “be careful what you wish for” come to my mind?

We moved to WY which I was looking forward to, not realizing the journey would be so difficult. The environment in every possible way was a complete opposite of my previous twenty years.

In WY my travels are limited, physically and mentally. I no longer have a home, yard and access to friends, or the outside world of a small town. From the surroundings of a country type atmosphere to a cold cement apartment was just the beginning. The community is completely different, and my personal circumstances are worse.

I’ve lived in almost every type of area, from a tenement building to a lovely new modern home. My travels have afforded me constant new experiences with different people, even though I have not been a world traveller.

So is the journey from place to place in life.

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 26

It was common, this scream of frustration by members of the California flower grower’s Association. Their specialty was the ever popular Malvaceae plant, the familiar name being “hollyhock”.

After many crops were destroyed in the latest 4.5 earthquake in the Association’s fields of hollyhock, the sound heard throughout the land was: “hollyhocks and aftershocks, we’re ruined!’
