Writing about the book “Rocket Men” reminds me of this man’s incredible audition. Forget the audience noise, the judges appearances and just enjoy his performance of “Rocket Man”. I have searched but not found a comparable version of this song. I like vocalists who put their entire being into the song they sing.

First Lines Friday

***

“December 21, 1968—Four days before Christmas”

“Three astronauts are strapped into a small spacecraft thirty-six stories in the air, awaiting the final moments of countdown. They sit atop the most powerful machine ever built. The Saturn V rocket is a jewel of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a vehicle that will generate the energy of a small atomic bomb.”

I liked this book for one, it took me back into my childhood and the wonder I felt about exploring space and two, reading the backgrounds of these three men and families was very interesting.

By August 1968, the American space program was in danger of failing in its two most important objectives: to land a man on the Moon by President Kennedy’s end-of-decade deadline, and to triumph over the Soviets in space. With its back against the wall, NASA made an almost unimaginable leap: It would scrap its usual methodical approach and risk everything on a sudden launch, sending the first men in history to the Moon—in just four months. And it would all happen at Christmas.

Too Tipsy

The fun happy atmosphere began to diminish as Gloria who definitely had too much liquid cheer, announced in a loud voice, “it’s going to stain!” Her loud exclamation made a fractious impact on the rest of the party goers. “It’s going to ruin this dress, “ teetering a bit sideways.

The repeat of her declaration was not necessary as the entire group could hear her raucous voice. The gentleman she had accidentally bumped into offered a token of apology, “I can recommend a good dry cleaner.” The crowd was relieved but Gloria stomped off to the restroom.

Cyranny’s 1MinFic

“Well if you can’t find it here you’re not going to find it!” The exasperated grandma sat down noisily in a nearby chair. Her husband stood looking at the display, sometimes removing one set of glasses for his readers and was closely observing the array of jeweled items.
“My mother had one of these and I want to replace it”, apparently not remembering his mother had passed over thirty years ago.

Fandango’s Flashback Friday

#writephoto 2019

Mary saw it in a dream. A perfect scene, with all the elements she loved. It was only a dream, the same one every night, of a meeting. She would be sitting there by the tree, autumn leaves falling around her, cozy blanket to perch on and another for warmth.

Mary would wait there until the blackness rose above the sunset and the chill made her leave. An unrealized dream of every sunset, waiting for him to appear over the horizon and be with her once again.

taking rest til morning wakes

happiness in the repose

what my mind believed

to truly abide seems lost

gestures convey meaning

comfort when needed

relationship would be re-bound

it’s the theme of holidays

to relish it with a sense of humor

how much we the privileged take for granted

stop your voice

build snowmen

Throwback Thursday

1) When you were a kid, what were your creative outlets? As an adult, what have you created that you are most proud of?
2) Have you ever saved someone’s life? Did you ever witness someone’s life being saved? Did someone save your life?
3) Did you ever get lost as a child? How did you handle it? Do you get easily lost now?
4) Did you search out presents your parents hid from you? Did you get caught? Do you hide presents from family members as an adult? Are they ever found?
5) Do you have a special song that was sung to you by either of your parents? Did you sing to your children? (or pets) Care to share the tunes?
6) What’s something you were afraid of as a child? What is something you are afraid of as an adult?
7) What do you wish you would have learned more about in school?
8) Is there something outside of school you were so interested in you taught yourself about it as an adult?
9) What made you laugh most when you were a child? What makes you laugh out loud now?
10) What’s something from your childhood that helped to shape your outlook on life?

Exploring the outdoors and reading, acting out various scenarios with my sister did create a big imagination. Now I try to create stories and poems here on the blog. I used to do many crafts but space has curtailed that and I am proud of projects I did as gifts especially for grandchildren and family. I was also a caterer so used creative efforts in fixing and displaying foods. I’ve used creativity in all of my paying jobs over the years—the most fun part of it!😀

I’ve never saved anyone’s life but I have seen three people dying and another including my husband try to save them. My brother-in-law saved me from drowning when a child.😌

I didn’t get lost but I was lost by my parents when we were traveling as a group with family and I was second to use a restroom. I came out to see my family in the car pulling away. Of course no phones etc back then and my too chatty cousin kept telling the adults I was not in the car but she was ignored. The gas station attendant was very nice and took care of me until my cousin threw a big enough fit to make the adults listen.😳

I never dared to search out gifts and probably my kids didn’t either. There was shaking of the boxes though.☺️

A song my dad sang to me when I went to my first formal dance was “Alice Blue Gown”. My mom made the dress and it was light blue.😌

The most scary thing to me then and now are spiders. Just seeing one gives me chills and stays on my mind. I know, crazy🤯

I wished I had gone to college, at least to a two year secretarial college which was my plan. Then I met the love of my life😉

Outside of school I taught myself to knit, crochet, sew, cook and bake, paint, wallpaper, paint creatively and do household repairs like plumbing, tiling and grouting etc.👩🏻‍🏭

Probably as a child I laughed most at stories my dad and brother-in-law told and as an adult til they passed away. The family here always make me laugh for some reason, every time we get together. We always try to focus on the positive and humor helps. This reads like we’re all idiots but I hope you get my meaning🤓

I think one of the stronger influences in my life were the close deaths of my grandparents and favorite uncle in my high school years plus other personal happenings I won’t discuss here. Trust and not taking life for granted are probably the biggest issues.🙃

Thanks for these questions and prompts every Thursday. They help establish our knowledge of each other.👋🏻

Looking for Something?

I cannot recommend watching Emily Blunt enough who is outstanding in this role. Chaske Spencer I loved also and the story as a whole. Watch them in the Prime series”The English” and let me know what you think of it. One part has the saddest song I’ve ever heard, by Mazzie Star, “Into Dust”. It didn’t help that while hearing this song I received a call that an old friend had just been killed in a car crash. I had to turn off the song.😭
