Daily Prompt: Famous

Maybe it’s infamous now, but in the seventies, visiting the Hawaiian islands, it was fascinating. With three kids in tow under the age of fourteen, we had an amazing two week venture into this paradise. Here is some history of the famous volcano that has been creating havoc in Hawaii this month.

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 27

He was just a regular sort

Never did anything you could call untoward

He watched society from afar

Observing it as a bizarre

Combination of the rich in funds

And many others who should be shunned

By himself and “ordinary” others

Who’s main concern is for their brothers

Never hobnobbed with politicos

Who seem to cause the brothers woe

Never having been on that side

Their thoughts of the future are compromised.

Daily Prompt: Doppelgรคnger

I always wondered if there were doppelgรคngers, but found out early on that there are, maybe more than one? At the age of fourteen I started a pen pal program through school. I corresponded with a boy from Scotland and it was fun and interesting. I received a picture of him a few weeks after we “met”. He looked like the identical twin to my cousin George. I couldn’t believe it. I wonder where he is now, the Scot I mean. He joined the Merchant Marines. My cousin? I know where he is. We don’t talk and have not for many years. We chose completely different lives, thank heavens! ๐Ÿ˜‚

MLMM Saturday Mix – Best Laid Plans

“You call this fresh? My god, woman, this must have been baked a week ago!” Harvey Drudge was always dissatisfied with his wife’s cooking, baking, cleaning–well, just about everything about his wife of thirty-eight years bothered him. He was just plain sick and tired of her, his marriage, his life in general. It seemed to Harvey that he had worked hard all of his life and never had any time or pleasure for himself, just to do what he wanted, when he wanted.

“You grabbed the wrong loaf, Dear. That stale loaf I’m saving for dressing for a turkey dinner. The fresh loaf I baked last night is in the bread box.” Martha was also tired of Harvey, their marriage, her constant work at home to keep everything just the way Harvey expected it when he came home. She never spent outside the budget he laid out, never bought anything frilly on a whim, and never spent time sitting in front of the television. Every night she had dinner prepared precisely at six o’clock when Harvey would come in the door. There was no, “how was your day, dear,” no greeting kiss, just a sigh of relief as he would fall into the dining room chair.

Both people in this marriage are fatigued with their jaded lifestyle, but there may be hope in the form of a letter Martha received in the mail the next day. She was about to throw it away, just another advertisement she thought, when surprised to see it sparkle. She looked at it again, and indeed there was a sparkle emanating from the envelope. Martha quickly sat in the kitchen chair, thinking she was about to faint. She had never seen anything like it before. Trembling hands opened the envelope, slowly, with expectations of some thing suddenly rising out of the paper. The glow of the card inside was almost blinding her, but as soon as she put on her reading glasses, it appeared perfectly normal.

“Dear Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Drudge, you have been selected as the Grand Prize winners of an all expenses paid, including airfare, hotel, meals, drinks, and any outstanding fees, vacation to the island of Hawaii. Please reply immediately.”

Martha thought she was going to pass out! Shortly after, Harvey came home and was greeted by a huge smile on his wife’s face. “Oh, god, what has she done now,” he thought. Martha handed him the envelope. He noticed the glow, but opened it anyway, revealing the reason for Martha’s smile. Even Harvey found a smile creasing his face. The couple left the next day.

And as all things seem to happen in our lives which you can blame on Murphy’s Law, or fate, or just bad timing, they arrived on the island of Hawaii on May 5, 2018.

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 26

I had to laugh when reading today’s Prompt from M, “the century of certainty”. Oh my goodness, has there ever been one? As time goes by quickly in these busy modern times, certainty goes by the wayside. Possibly sometime around 1953-1955, between wars was a pleasant time, but even then, the threat of missiles and bombs existed. Maybe I am wrong, maybe there was a time of certainty, one without famine, disease, war, poverty, homelessness, but I can’t pinpoint one, can you?

MLMM First Line Friday 5-25-18

“The thieves took everything except the dog.”

“Of course that was to be expected” Henry remarked, shaking his head. “Who would want that dog?”

In a beautiful country home Henry shared with his wife Gloria, the furniture was missing, the antiques handed down for generations, and the good silver, such as it was. Grandmother’s china, special glassware collected, everything gone, except the dog.

Returning from their annually scheduled vacation, the sad couple found nothing of even sentimental value in their home except the ridiculous life sized ceramic atrocity. A gift? Was that the intention, or a thought-to-be-clever jibe? Whatever it was intended it was still sitting in the living room, had always been a constant reminder of his mother in law’s obsession with it. For some strange reason, after her death, it was willed to Henry. It was a likeness complete with actual collar of the deceased around its neck.

Henry’s father being a widow fell immediately for this woman, a direct opposite of Henry’s mother. She was childless, brash, arrogant, and supposedly loved Henry’s father, even to death. She was obsessed with the aforementioned dog, a white poodle, and had a ceramic likeness made to honor the dog. She had a burial site in a pet cemetery which Henry’s dad and she visited often. Henry’s father had no love for any animal up until he met his new wife. He also never attended church even with pleas from Henry’s mother, but now attended regularly. Henry and his brother were amazed and saddened by their father’s transformation.

To come home to see nothing of their own life left, only that reviled ceramic dog, Henry was incensed. Gloria quietly agreed and without a moment of hesitation, the dog landed in the trash bin.

SoCS 5-26-18

Hello, it’s Saturday! And it’s warm and sunny, even had a few hot days, but we also skipped spring and moved right into summer. I’m hoping to see the pampas plants planted outside my tiny cement patio look like actual plants with white fronds. There are two or three starters, so maybe after waiting four years my vision will be complete.๐ŸŒพ

The prompt for today is grill. The best grill I have ever seen is on Dennis Quaid. His smile can still melt my heart.

Let it Bleed 19

“You can do it,โ€ she whispered. She slipped her hand over his and pushed his trigger finger, slowly. The shot hit the woman directly in the heart, dropping and killing her instantly.

She lead her accomplice off the building roof and disposed of the weapon in the laundry chute next to the elevator. A quick hop into a cab and no one would ever know who murdered the infamous Stormy Daniels.

Of course there were suspicions, many T. related, but there was no actual proof. There was a rumor that S. H. S. had no alibi, or a former favorite mayor, but as anything that happens around our fearless leader, no proof would be found.

Totally unrelated news report the following day of the sudden demise of a former CIA informant.

Time to Write #17 and Putting My Feet in the Dirt 25

Surveying all the lawn

With his tiny little paws

Keen eyes to spot a treat

Dashing around on tiny feet

Stops to fluff his frilly frock

Scampers away to hide in rocks

An enemy is on the prowl

He heard the angry cat’s meow

He shakes the fluff as a chiding

To other rodents might be hiding

A quick jump for a far up limb

Will wait until the cat’s held within

And then return to the waiting seed

As the housecat foiled, peers through a screen.
