MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt

Brewing coffee wafted into my bedroom, I was so happy we set the timer for it last night. There is a reason for a timer instead of the usual blaring alarm, preferring a scent instead of a jarring sound. Even with the inducement of holding that warming cup, I rolled over and scooted under the duvet. Spring thunderstorms in the night kept me awake till three, and I wasn’t ready to be chipper just yet.

My companion, however, was oblivious to last night’s noise, and slept like a log, and was ready for the morning cup of caffeine. I tugged at his tshirt as he rose to leave, and he accommodated my morning request. Snuggling under the covers with him was my favorite way to start the day. This love of my life was always there for me, answering every and any need I might have at the moment. Sunday mornings were always a delight; a day we could be fully into each other instead of hurrying about satisfying the necessary pull of our daily life.

A husband, a lover, a best friend, everything I had thought would never actually happen in my life, yet here he was, in the flesh. Growing up reading many stories of fantasy involving knights in shining armor, this cliche had come to me, not as a dream in my childhood, but by way of a softball game. I was watching from the bleachers with a group of friends when I saw him, and was immediately drawn to him. He also was drawn to me, evidenced by his seeking me out after the game ended. It was a casual greeting, but singling me out of the crowd was telling. This was the unlikely pairing of two strangers across a crowded field. From then on we were together in every way.

This morning he returned with two hot cups of coffee, croissants and jam on a tray. Outside it was raining softly and the atmosphere lended itself to a day of staying in, being comfy and together. I couldn’t help myself from thinking how fortunate I was, living this life, being close to the man I loved and respected, and questioned what I had done to deserve it.

We both are dedicated to our jobs during the week, but Sundays are ours alone. We prepare each Saturday, shopping for anything we might favor on our day off. It is usually something already prepared for a no fuss day. Lounging a bit more, a long shower for two, we were ready for a walk in the now rain freshened park.

This evening we had candlelight and dessert by the fire. To make the evening complete, my husband turned on the CD player to the song we first danced to, “Scotch and Soda”. We danced like it was the first time. This may sound like a dream, but we work every day to make this life a reality. We dedicate ourselves to each other first. It’s worth it.

Nebraska or the Twilight Zone?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, middle America circa 1950s, exists today in small town Nebraska. My daughter and her three oldest daughters traveled from Denver to Omaha to see a play in the antique Orpheum theater. During the eight hour trip, they stopped for lunch.

The restaurant had great reviews and they walked up to an outside window to order. The sliding window was slammed shut after taking their order. They walked inside to wait for the order, and to use the restroom. They were told there was no restroom. The “busy with families” clientele stopped eating and stared at the four strangers entering– absolutely stopped talking and stared the entire time the young women waited for their order.

After fifteen minutes of complete silence and staring, my granddaughter remarked “screw this” and grabbed her sister’s hand and said, “we need to make those wedding plans.” (I’m told she takes after me, Yeah!)

The family is used to being stared at, being diverse, and having handicap members, but not to this extreme. Luckily we’ve all adopted–pun intended, a handy sense of humor!

When they received their order, they left and ate their lunch at a park across the street. This is a picture of the girls on Easter 2019:

MLMM First Line Friday – MRI

“Breath in, breath out, you’ll be okay.”

Sure, like that’s going to happen. You’re not the one laying here trying to ignore this enclosure, shoulders cramped by cold metal. . .my whole body surrounded by cold metal, where all I can do IS breathe. I can’t move, for at least forty-five minutes I’m not to move. I wonder if that includes eyelashes. . .probably does, since they have my head in a vice, and told me to keep my eyes shut. I wonder who invented this torture device, some sadist from the thirteenth century?

I’m breathing all right, and trying to keep the claustrophobia and nausea panic from coming to fruition. . .wonder if anyone actually vomits in here? That sickening vision playing in my mind, I breathe deeply, expanding my lungs while trying not to actually move my chest. Okay that’s impossible, short panicky breaths take over. I break the rules and utter, “anyone ever get sick in here?”

“Breath in, breath out, you’ll be okay.”

MLMM Tale Weaver

This week I was trying to get my old laptop empty to see if I could download the WP app on it. It is old, uses Windows 7 and I can hear you laughing right now. I let it gather dust after buying an iPad which I much preferred over a Windows system.

In doing so, I found flash drives with photos from early 2000s and it was a reunion with my friends and grandchildren from the past.

Looking at photos and places I haven’t seen in over five years, some over fifteen years, causes me to ponder about my feelings in those days.

I was in bad health, but in my best element as a busy grandmother. I look upon those days with nostalgia, some days with regrets, sadness, some days with laughter at chubby babies and Halloween costumes, but mostly with thoughts I did my best. A reunion for me is not just physical but mental.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt

Mary wished she could be living the idyll she had pictured. It is impossible of course, but never stopped her dreaming. If one day she woke up in a fluffy bed, with the most luxurious sheets, coverings, she would be happy. This setting would have to include the most treasured of all, the love of her life quietly sleeping beside her. The sun would be streaming in, carrying a floral scented breeeze from a balcony. A sweet dream, only Mary’s fantasy.
