Friday Fictioneers

We packed up two large dogs, three cats and said goodbye to our daughter leaving for college. We were moving two thousand miles away to Whitehouse, TX. Besides being sad to leave I had no love for TX and wasn’t looking forward to it.

Moving in,the septic tank failed. We called the local business to rescue us. A friendly guy appeared immediately and as he worked he talked. He’s knee deep in the hole, hands full, asking about us. Then he said, I’m the mayor here too.You should come to my restaurant, I make the best hamburgers in town!

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 31 and 100 Word Wednesday 73

Anchored avenues:

Blue green water called to him. He was a boatman, seafarer, sailor, pirate, seaman, marine, pilot, shipmate, sea dog, windjammer, shellback, water dog, yachter, swab, boater, tar, middy, old salt, jack or mate. He loved being on salty water, and it had been his home since twelve. Growing up on a boat may seem strange to some, but he knew nothing else.

He had traveled the world with his uncle, a mariner himself since twelve, so it was a family tradition. Today they are in port to stock supplies for the much anticipated trip to Tahiti. A dream come true.

FFftPP Week 22

He came to pick up his son after school. Walking home down the dark street added to the disappointment he constantly felt the last year. Why was he acting this way, the question most in his mind. What is causing this errant behavior in my son, a puzzle he couldn’t solve.

Mr. Drake had adopted Frankie at six months of age. He was loved equally by his parents and siblings. He was amazing, intelligence outweighing some of his brothers, and excelled in school. He was interested in everything and had a lot to say about it. Everyone around him enjoyed his company. He was good at making people laugh and was never condescending to classmates.

Mr. Drake, his family, teachers, friends, were all proud of Frankie. This was the norm until Frankie completely changed his behavior at the age of thirteen. He was failing in school, doing homework but never turning it in. He was a behavioral problem in class, either talking or sleeping. He stole food from smaller kids in the lunchroom and at home was sullen and unresponsive.

Mr. Drake was at wit’s end. Could it be drugs? If so, where did he get money for them? Unanswered questions.

Daily Prompt:Broken

(Deviantart)

It takes a lot for a strong woman to be broken. An immigrant, educated, married, , children, teacher, built a business from scratch, and now life is trying to break her. Betrayed by the people she loved most, trying to steal the results of her hard work and efforts.

What is the lesson we’re supposed to learn from people’s suffering? Are we to stand helpless beside the strong? What is the good in that? We can admire the strength but what is its worth when in the end they are defeated?

MLMM Wordle #198

Her maternal instincts overwhelmed her as she observed the young boy in the park. It seemed his parents were absent, along with numerous other adults. She came here everyday to get out of the office and have lunch. In this particular instance she felt drawn to this boy, him being obviously too small to be here alone. He was playing in muted tones, as if speaking to an imaginary friend. She continued to watch him and feelings of compassion amassed in her being. She wanted to take him home, nestle him in a warm bed, care for and feed him, like a stray animal.

Marion loved animals and in her eyes, this woebegone child was comparable to an abandoned pet. She did not want to leave him there alone. Her own loneliness caused her to think irrationally, not realizing her intentions could be deleterious to the child. She decided to approach him, offering a bottled water, thinking he must be parched in the heat of the day. As she stepped closer, he looked up at her. She extended the bottle and he was about to take it, when a shrill voice interrupted the otherwise quiet scene.

“What are you doing? Get away from my son!” A woman carrying a toddler in one arm came running toward them. Marion stepped back in surprise. The boy’s mother grabbed his arm with her other hand and yanked him up off the ground. “Who do you think you are? These are my children” she yelled, adding in an acerbic tone, “get your own kids!” The woman strode off, crying toddler and small boy in hand.

Marion was stunned. It was if she had been in a dream, letting the boy’s imagined abandonment take over reality. Marion packed the bottle back in her bag and returned to the office.

The Secret Keeper #143

He was on the brink, he knew it! Everything laid ahead of him. He was on the road to success. How could he not be? His school years were finally over, his degree was accomplished with honors and his future could only improve. As he gazed into the sky that day he thought of how hard he had worked to be sitting there, just happy, happy with the prospect of an even more rewarding life.

The day started with this feeling as soon as he had called the love of his life, Miranda. Mark loved her more than his mind could fathom, and she felt the same. He had it all, how could he be so lucky? Was it luck she just happened to be in his easiest class so he could steal glances when the instructor droned on? Was it luck she just happened to walk into his favorite coffee shop every afternoon to study? He smiled again. Mark actually had a difficult time lately not to be constantly smiling.

This afternoon they met as usual, even though their studying sessions were now over. Today he had a special gift for her. It had taken courage to ask his mother to part with his grandmother’s ring, but was relieved his mother was thrilled for him and gave it willingly. Mark hoped Miranda would love the ring and say yes to the most important question he would ever ask.

The coffee was served and he was getting nervous. Miranda suspected something like this and wore a beautiful pink flowered sundress and a soft pink ribbon cascaded down the side of her hair. The picture of femininity he thought as he drank in her presence. She smelled of roses and he was mesmerized. Their relationship had grown from attraction to serious commitment on both sides.

Mark fumbled the ring in his pocket, nervously cupping it in his hand. His other hand took hers and he asked her, lovingly, quietly and as she returned his gaze, Miranda could only manage a nod to his question. Her heart moved up to her throat. She couldn’t speak. She thought he loved her this much, but he hadn’t asked yet. She was overwhelmed by emotion. Mark opened his hand and slipped the ring on her finger.

The couple sat there, quiet, too full of emotion to even speak. It is going to be a good life for us, he thought.
