The Haunted Wordsmith 11-24-18

“Archeologists suspect that humans have been using dogs in warfare since the animals were first domesticated more than 15,000 years ago.”

War dogs were used by the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Sarmatians, Baganda, Alans, Slavs, Britons, and the Romans. The Molossusdog of the Molossia region of Epirus was the strongest known to the Romans, and was specifically trained for battle.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt #82

“Reveal yourself” the man insisted. “Say what you want, tell me, tell all of us gathered here!” The small white robed man had a much larger voice than you would expect from such a small frame, and I think we were all a bit intimidated. This was the first EST meeting we attended and a nervous look passed between us. We wanted transformation, accountability and possibility…could it be this was too much illumination?

MLMM First Line Friday 11-23-18

This was by far, the bleakest and blackest of Fridays. I was the only one who seemed to notice. Everyone else was scurrying around shopping, on their phone or computer, tablet or looking at newspaper sale ads.

It was only me, as is often the case, that woke up sad and teary eyed. I dragged myself out of the warm bed, donned a warm sweatshirt and made coffee. Something had to give, it had been too many days like this. I made coffee hoping the sweet hot liquid would cheer me, give some warmth to my coldness. Is it possible to warm your mind with a cup of coffee? It was my only choice.

This was another in a month of bad days. I joined the holiday group, put on the face of contentment, but my heart wasn’t in it. I dared not look into the others’ eyes too closely for fear they would look back and see the real me. And so it begins, coffee ready.

The Haunted Wordsmith 11-23-18

The day after Thanksgiving, one of the days of the year where America eats too much and tries to remember to give thanks for the abundance in their lives. One of the days during the holiday season when we give a can or a coat to a shelter or store to distribute. We feel good about ourselves as we pass by a street person thinking we’ve helped, and we have, for a minute or two. We’ve thought of them for a few seconds as we search our closet for something too big or too small, well worn but usable. We pick out a few cans to donate from our full larder of cookies and chips.

Suggested words from Theresa today are: unbridled, song and future. Her accompanying photo might make us think of the fragility of earth’s treasures, and it does me too. But then I can never forget the photo below. It may not be of a real person, it may be fake, but the words on the sign get to me. No matter what the circumstances or the education or the problems causing homelessness, to me this is the real problem.

We no longer seem to have unbridled compassion, and a hopeful song for the future of our fellow man depends on all of us–to stop and think about the message on this person’s sign.

RDP – Shop

Should I

Or should I not

Look inside

Only to shop

Of course I’m curious

Who would not be?

For inside, there’s plenty to see.

A person for everyone

Type or taste

There seems there is no time to waste

Tall or short, fat or thin

Depends on the mood I’m in

Determines if it’s you I choose

Give it a try? Nothing to lose?

Page after page to be admired

All these faces I might desire

To choose just one would be a chore

Think I’ll have to shop much more.

******

Disclaimer: when looking for a dating site to illustrate what I wrote I came across this: OMG😂

Word of the Day: Oblong

I had to laugh reading this choice of the day. Oblong is an odd shape. I found that out years ago as I was trained to be a beauty consultant. Apparently there are many face shapes and you should wear your hair in flattering styles to distinguish or hide certain shapes, as oval is considered the elite. Of course I was the only one in my group whose face shape was considered oblong. I laugh just thinking about it now, but at the time it was very disconcerting as after the announcement I received many uncomfortable stares.

Oblong is the oddball, and you never even think of it unless you’re buying a tablecloth and it’s the only one left to select because no one owns or wants an oblong table. You can’t put leaves on the end of an oblong table, so what use is it? When you think of oblong, what comes to mind? Nothing pretty, cute or charming, I can tell you! Here are examples of face shapes and be forewarned before you pull your morning face free from any hairdo and compare…

The Guitar Player

Beautiful, he thought. She was the whole package of perfection: beauty, talent, and the smile, knowing how much pleasure she brought from playing, the unconcealed pride as she received kudos from her audience.

He stood in awe, here in his small record shop that was resurrected from a death due to instant music in instant devices from instant celebrities. This woman, this real person, interacting with real people, pleasing her audience in real time. . .he was pleased.

She finished her song, put the instrument down, surveyed her admirers, and thought, all the lessons, the dedication; and smiled at her reward.

Fandango’s Provocative Question 2

I’m happy you are continuing this series!

“What do you think is more useful: intelligence or wisdom, and why to you feel that way?”

I have definite opinions on this. Of course intelligence is important and useful, but I think practical experience is better to survive in the everyday, therefore I choose wisdom. It is like common sense, you may have a college degree but can you change a tire without calling AAA?? Life skills are important and not taught…another positive for community colleges that offer these courses…Can you balance a checkbook? Can you write a resume or a personal or business letter? Can you use the phone properly? Can you look up anything for yourself in a library or rely on Google or Wikipedia for your information? Do you read newspapers or rely on the latest updates on your device of choice? The rise in technology for everything isn’t letting you use your brain, it does it for you, it even thinks for you. How many under twenty people do you know that cannot “live” without their cell phones or tablets? As always, just my opinion.
