Unexpected Guest

I turned up the heat,
A new guest to meet.
A job for me, sort of a plea.
Would you sit with my friend
She asked, being polite
Sure, I thought ahead with delight.
His name is Lion, she remarked.
What is this I’m about to embark?
A big shedding dog? Or a baby hog?
I hope not a cat. Please, not that.
Can I bring him by? I’ll be there soon.
Don’t worry, he’s quiet, won’t take much room.
I wondered what animal should I wish
And in she came with a bowl and a fish.
After setting him up on the shelf with a light
We watched a movie for the rest of the night.

A Time to Reflect

The photographs below were taken around 1925-27.  The photo on the left is my mom about 20, and her sister-in-law, about 18 years old.  Dressed up for some dance fest, I think.  Those hats!!  The center photo is my dad and his twin sister.  The right hand photo, my mom perched on a rock face.  I ran across these looking for some old Christmas pictures.  Thought you all might enjoy the fashions of that day.

                                                                                           Happy Thanksgiving!

Bullying and Suicide in Children

Why is it that bullying is increasing? Elementary school teachers seem to ignore it. I really don’t blame them completely. The level of disrespect in general by children ages six to twelve is virtually left unchecked. My reasoning for this is the lack of discipline a teacher may use. An unruly child can no longer be put in the corner, or paddled in extreme cases. This is child abuse. I’m certainly not advocating physical violence but would like to know some working alternatives.
According to the National Bullying Prevention Center, one out of four children are being bullied and that’s just the reported cases. 64% of cases are not reported. Good news is that 57% is stopped by the victims’ peers. Studies show that schools with anti bullying programs reduce this abuse by 27%. Doesn’t sound like a lot, does it? We have restricted the behavior of our teachers to such a degree that some children call their teacher names, talk back, throw fits and worse. Even acting out loudly in a principal’s office when retained as a disciplinary measure goes without correction. The school staff has their hands tied.
Bullied children go to school every day wondering if this day their lunch will be stolen, or giggled and laughed at by “former friends”, or isolated on the playground. Why they are so cruel to each other is a mystery to me. Perhaps this behavior is handed down from the previous generation, or their parents treat them this way at home and it comes “naturally”.
As a grandparent this escalation worries me. Is part of it the attitudes of the media, television, cinema, video and computer games with violence so available to their impressionable minds? Something has to give. Our children deserve to be treated with respect by their peers. You’re probably thinking this has always gone on, don’t worry about it, they’ll be fine. My point is this:  it’s not okay. Suicide rates among elementary, yes, elementary age children, is increasing.

BULLYING STATISTICS

Every 7 MINUTES a child is bullied. Adult intervention – 4%. Peer intervention – 11%. No intervention – 85%.

Biracial and multiracial youth are more likely to be victimized than youth who identify with a single race.

Bullied students tend to grow up more socially anxious, with less self-esteem and require more mental health services throughout life.

Only 7% of U.S. parents are worried about cyberbullying; yet 33% of teenagers have been victims of cyberbullying

Kids who are obese, gay, or have disabilities are up to 63% more likely to be bullied than other children.

1 MILLION children were harassed, threatened or subjected to other forms of cyberbullying on FACEBOOK during the past year.

86% of students said, “other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them” causes teenagers to turn to lethal violence in schools.

It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Source: National Education Association.

American schools harbor approximately 2.1 million bullies and 2.7 million of their victims. Dan Olweus, National School Safety Center.

SUICIDE STATISTICS

Suicide remains among the leading causes of death of children under 14. In most cases, the young people die from hanging.

Suicide rates among 10 to 14-year-olds have grown more than 50 percent over the last three decades. (The American Association of Suicidology, AAS)

A new review of studies from 13 countries found signs of an apparent connection between bullying, being bullied, and suicide. (Yale School of Medicine)

Suicide rates among children between the ages of 10 & 14 are very low, but are “creeping up.” (Ann Haas, Director of the Suicide Prevention Project at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)

The suicide rate among young male adults in Massachusetts rose 28 percent in 2007. However, that does not reflect deaths among teenagers and students Carl’s age. (Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health, in a report released April 8, 2009)

Since 2002, at least 15 schoolchildren ages 11 to 14 have committed suicide in Massachusetts. Three of them were Carl’s age. (“Constantly Bulled, He Ends His Life at Age 11,” by Milton J. Valencia. The Boston Globe, April 20, 2009)

Suicide rates among 10 to 14-year-olds have grown more than 50 percent over the last three decades. (The American Association of Suicidology, AAS)

In 2005 (the last year nationwide stats were available), 270 children in the 10-14 age group killed themselves. (AAS)

1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying.

56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school.

15% of all school absenteeism is directly related to fears of being bullied at school.

71% of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school.

1 out of 20 students has seen a student with a gun at school.

282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month.

Those in the lower grades reported being in twice as many fights as those in the higher grades. However, there is a lower rate of serious violent crimes in the elementary level than in the middle or high schools.

90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims of bullying.

Among students, homicide perpetrators were more than twice as likely as homicide victims to have been bullied by peers.

Bullying statistics say revenge is the strongest motivation for school shootings.

87% of students said shootings are motivated by a desire to “get back at those who have hurt them.”

86% of students said, “other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them” causes teenagers to turn to lethal violence in the schools.

61% of students said students shoot others because they have been victims of physical abuse at home.

54% of students said witnessing physical abuse at home can lead to violence in school.

According to bullying statistics, 1 out of every 10 students who drops out of school does so because of repeated bullying.

Harassment and bullying have been linked to 75% of school-shooting incidents.

“About 1 in 9 children have attempted suicide before their high school graduation, but learning that they’re making plans as early as elementary school is especially chilling.”  http://healthland.time.com/2011/11/30/study-40-of-kids-who-attempt-suicide-first-try-in-elementary-or-middle-school/

Daily Post:  Elicit

A certain couple remaining nameless

Was not in fear of being quite shameless

If anything needed a small repair

They would ignore it, pretend it’s not there.

The old house they lived in had electrical woes

The wires were frayed, and very badly exposed

Dangerous, sure, but mainly ignored

The old house chores, well, just made them bored.

One of the tenants was setting the clock

Heating the oven, received a hard shock

They ran to their cell to finally elicit

A repairman who would hopefully fix it.

I’m sad to report and sadder to say

The call from their cell came too late that day.

The shock ignited a flame up above

The ceiling and curtains flew up like a dove.

I know this tale is a sad one, ’tis true.

But a lesson to learn for both me and you

If your house needs fixing or minor repair

Then do it, or suffer resulting despair.

For Adults Only (Spoiler Alert)

Reading Amommasview and The Cabbage Patch’s latest posts, I was laughing and thought back to a Christmas near-disaster. Being the designated shopper and stocking filler, I usually didn’t wait till the last minute for anything. That was in my younger days when being organized was a priority.

I had purchased all the necessary traditional items for the socks: oranges for the toes, mini toothpaste tubes, new toothbrushes, assorted candy, mini books and games, color books, new sets of crayons and possibly a comic book. All of these delights were secretly a ploy. The adults could sleep and the kids were kept busy after they rose at two a.m. to see if Santa had come yet.  After all, we’d just gotten to bed ourselves after setting up car tracks, doll houses, etc. I also filled my husband’s stocking.

Just about ready for bed, my husband pointed out my stocking was still empty. I was disappointed because this year we decided to surprise each other instead of using older versions of the kids’ goodies. Of course, being an engineer he didn’t falter. I went to bed and he arrived a short time later. The kids busied themselves a few hours and then ran in all excited carrying their new treasures. We crawled out of bed and they insisted we open our own stockings. Mine contained oranges, apples, bananas and some candy canes from the tree. The kids didn’t say anything, they had already started opening presents.

Share Your World – Grateful

Happy Thanksgiving! The tradition of going around the table and saying what you’re thankful for is sometimes tricky, if you have a large family, and last in the round!  Picture below only a small part!☺️💞

1. I am sincerely grateful for my home life. I am privileged to live in a now two-year-old apartment with friendly maintenance caretakers, efficient managers, and family five minutes away.

2. A loving family whether here, an hour away, or 2000 miles away, is a blessing.  I am exremely grateful for them.

3. I’m absolutely loving the blogging community. Meeting people from all over this earth is so much fun. I put myself out there and get rewarded by new friends everyday.

4. I live in a small capitol city. It’s spread out, so appears larger than it is. Everyone I’ve met is very friendly and accommodating. Two of my favorite places I’ve seen so far are the Botanical Gardens and the Cheyenne Street Railway Trolley park.

5. My dad was born in Hulett, WY where the Devils Tower is located. You might remember seeing it in the movie “Close Encounters”. This region, including Yellowstone Park, is homey and familiar from his many stories and our family visits.

6. There is no place or country I would rather live than in the USA. Even now when we’re showing our worst side to the world, it is my privilege to live here.

7. Grateful in regards to myself? Weird question. Right this minute I have everything I want or need. I am a lucky person in tons of ways…..see that hyperbole there?😂

8. I am thankful for my grandson visiting this weekend. We had fun. He beat me in Trivial Pursuit, a game in the original box he described as “is this from the 1800s?” This week I am looking forward to his brother’s 17th birthday!

Daily Post Prompt: Aromatic

One of the most aromatic flowers is the gardenia. My first encounter with this scent was a pre wedding gift from my intended. We were separated for three months before the wedding by two thousand miles. In addition to his almost daily letters, he sent me presents. Since he was in Texas, this new-to-me flower was his choice. It was a beautiful and romantic gift, filling the room with perfume as a constant reminder of my fiancé. Once removed from the plant, the blossoms soon lose their creamy white colors and fade. Their fragrance lingers.

A Family’s Loss (100 word Prompt)

“I thought I heard you crying. Are you hurt? Bad dream?” He went over to sit on the bed. Huge tears on her cheeks. He felt her fear, his heart sank. “We will all be okay, you’ll see. It will just take some time.” He got up and walked to her bureau. “Would you like to take this picture to bed with you?” She looked so distressed, but took the frame and laid it on her pillow. He gave his daughter a hug, and she settled down under the covers again. She fell asleep with her eyes on the photograph.
