Picture Prompt-14

If I stay very quiet under this tree they won’t suspect a thing. Well, I am a feline after all, so they might suspect, but they won’t be able to prove anything. That’s why it’s so nice having a dog in the family. They’re so big and clumsy, they always get the blame.

I see the target. When everyone leaves the room, I’ll make my move. I’m surprised they put those fronds in the Christmas arrangement in the first place. I do love them. They are furry and flop around like a squirrel’s tail, and squirrels are so much fun to chase.

Okay, Barney just lumbered in and there’s not a human in sight! Perfect! Sneaking, sneaking, jump! I grab a couple of fronds and escape to my cushion. I stretch out and pretend I’m asleep.

“Oh, Barney! Bad dog, bad dog”

I timed it perfectly. Heh, heh, heh…

Cookie baking 2016

This evening it’s a balmy 11 degrees F.  Very busy day beginning with a call, “Want to do cookies?”  Of course I replied, but bring the cookie sheets, I only have one.  So expecting them at two they finally arrived about five.  Granddaughter who just had hip surgery settled in on the couch and the other girls gathered around the table.  My daughter was the official roller outer and the other girls made various colored frosting.  Purple was not my favorite, but fine.  There was sort of, let’s see how “special” we can make them.  The man on the plate is Benedict Cumberbatch.  I have gathered millions of cutters over the years, different stars are my favorite.  Storage has these at present; maybe in the summer we’ll remember to fish them out.  I have included pictures of our efforts.  It was a fun time, and no one can even stand the thought of eating any, after sampling the broken ones. I think tomorrow that will change.  ☺Being all together while the guys watched the Bronco game at my daughter’s home, it was great fun being with my granddaughters and their mom.  And they even cleaned up!🎄

Quote Challenge-6:  Destinations

Many times in our lives our destination changes. When I was fourteen my destination was to become an executive secretary or a journalist. My aptitude test read mechanic! I took business classes and planned on business college. I wanted to pay my own way, so started working. Then I met my husband and my destination changed. After our children grew my direction turned to employment, and I had a few fun and interesting jobs. As time passed I wanted to be my own boss and the road turned into three different self employed jobs. My path changed again when my health turned me into a part timer. Over the years, I’ve had many satisfying destinations. At present I’m finding pleasant rewards as a mother and grandmother, my very best occupation. Writing a bit over the years has always been enjoyable, but writing this blog is fun. My want for new destinations is pretty much over for now, I think I’m settling in. You never know, that new opportunity might be just around the corner with new worlds to explore, and new goals to achieve.

Daily Prompt:  Fishing

Watching “Life Below Zero”on Geographic National,

I wonder if these people are even rational?

Their lifestyle is not what I’m wishing

Especially not when depending on fishing.

I watched as this woman went with her truck

To get some food straight out of the muck.

Oysters or clams or some such

This “food” I would not ever touch.

Give me a fresh water lake and a boat

And a fishing pole that works by remote

While I read a book

In a cozy nook

On the boat

While we float.

Now catching one is hardly a chore,

Use a net, and then go back to shore.

Cleaning them, well that’s not for me,

I’ll leave that job to my sweetie.

I’ll fry them up with pepper and salt

None of that deep fried using malt.

Fishing is fine if you like that sort of thing

It’s not like the old days with a branch and a string.

Picture Prompt-13

Saturday Sneers of a Starcrossed Snowman

“Okay, who put my mouth on like this?  And those eyebrows!  Give me a break!  I’m supposed to be a holly, jolly snowman, not the witch of Eastwick!  Frosty was never fixed like this.  Maybe I need that magic hat he wore so I can dance around.  Not likely.  Any movement and I’ll fall off this ledge!  Good lord, whoever made me doesn’t have much Christmas spirit.  Perched on the edge, sure to melt easily since I’m not surrounded by cold snow, and this look?  By the way, where’s my nose, or did they put a raisin or berry so the birds would pluck it off?  At least my arms are right…showing my frustration.  Come on, sun, destroy me now!”

Not so “quaint” sayings

Was texting my daughter and said,

It’s colder than a cob

out there, 15 degrees, snow, low of -10.
I added, your dad used to say

Colder than a witch’s tit

Always hated that word, don’t know why.
She replied yes, it’s

Slicker than snot

Hope the kids are careful driving.
Then she added yes, he also said

Off like a prom dress

And we laughed, remembering my husband’s humor.
Of course he also taught the grandkids how to light matches 🙄

My own dad used
Nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

My sister just wrote:

Great jumping toady frogs, Leaping Lizards, If it pleases you, it tickles me all to hell, and Great Jeosophat

What sayings were used in your family? Give me a few in the comments!

Christmas in Connecticut

Besides “Holiday Inn“, this has always been one of my favorite Christmas movies.  It is a comedy, my favorite, starring Barbara Stanwyk and Dennis Morgan.  I’ve never been much of a fan of Barbara S.,  but this cast includes one of the most special actors, in my opinion.  His name is S Z Sakall, (1883-1955).  An Hungarian stage and film actor who went by Szoke Szakall, Hungarian for blonde beard.  “Because of his befuddled amiability onscreen….he was nicknamed Cuddles…”.  He left Europe, already a well known character actor, because of the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi movement.  Probably his most known performance in America is the waiter in “Casablanca” in 1942.

If you choose to watch “Christmas in Connecticut“, see if you love him as much as I do.  This is a very funny movie and good for all ages.

A Winter Night

The room is dark except for the small scented nightlight. The snow plows on the main road, and the sad sound of a fire truck broke the silence. Some poor family might be stranded in this freezing weather, or a motorist slipped out of control on the ice. A winter night exposes tragedy. The young men cannot keep up with their shovels for the wind is filling in snow as fast as they clear it. A dog’s howl insures others will answer. Every being is feeling lonely and cold tonight.

The room is dark and the scent of the nightlight cannot dispel the loneliness. She hears a car drive by, but it’s not stopping here. No one is coming to break her mood. She sips the tea, but cannot eat. Her body aches, but not for food, or sleep, but for the company of his love. Her mind plays tricks, causing her to see him in the shadows. Could it be? Would she turn on the lamp and see him there? She dared not because she knew he wasn’t, no matter how much she wished it.

The scented nightlight caused a small shadow in the dark room. As she pulled the covers around her, she could almost feel him beside her. His warmth, his body next to her. She curled up and nestled into her pillow, wanting it to be him. She covered her head with the warm blanket, hiding from the nightlight glow. She wanted to shut everything out, to just pretend he was there. She drew the covers in, as if they were his arms holding her tight. The cold, the loneliness, wouldn’t reach her here. She would sleep and dream of him.

The room was dark and the nightlight glowed. The snow was still falling, but the night sounds were quieting. The plows stopped, the shoveling men retreated till morning. The animals finally slept. The winter night’s cold was unrelenting. The lanes were freezing icy trails. Jack Frost painted glass with beautiful designs. She fell asleep to dream.
