Daily Prompt: Maddening

I finished my small decorations today

When a wreath on the door, to my dismay

Was impossible to hang

Made me think, dang!

Now I’ll have to have wait

For someone tall, my fate

Have to be subdued

And wait for a dude

To hang the wreath

While I sit underneath.

I got up this morning with energy plus

Cause I slept last night, without a fuss.

I did something I have dread

I made some banana bread.

I searched a huge box for my Christmas CDs

On the closet bottom if you please

I struggled and pulled and tore at the box

I reached under the layer of papers and docs

And loaded them all on my lap to reveal

The cases all empty, all unsealed.

And then my memory decided to show

It does, once in a while, you know.

The CDs are all in an album of sorts

Kept there for car trips, long, not short.

Know what happened but not where they are

Hope they’re not in my old car

It suffered a crash, now on the junk heap

Could they be in storage, to keep?

Even though this bit of the day

Was maddening, I have to say

I’ll keep smiling as I have some tea

With banana bread, and admire my tree.

Picture Prompt-11

The town square was buzzing

Everyone and their cousin

Was enjoying the bustle

While trying to hustle

To buy that last gift

To give someone a lift.

Tourists also filled the square

Taking pictures of decorations there.

The crowd seemed happy and full of glee

All gathered to see the lights on the tree.

Christmas cheer all throughout.

Santa’s coming, there is no doubt.

Stuck

Stuck.
Have you ever been stuck?
Like glue?
Or gum on your shoe?
Some say between a rock and a hard place
Making a decision you don’t want to face.
People remark, just keep moving
You must, to be improving.
Lately that’s a hard thing to do.
Friends ask, what’s bothering you?
I think I don’t even know.
The season, the snow?
The wind, the cold?
Or just getting old?
I say so, as a funny joke,
Giving myself a peckish poke.
I feel in my mind exactly the same
As when I had young kids to tame.
In my mind, at least most of the time
Everything’s peachy, feel just fine
Is it the early lack of sunshine?
The darkness, that creeps into my mind?
Must be it, the winter blues.
Anyone have a sun lamp to use?

Daily Prompt:  Folly

I remember in school when we were taught about Fulton’s Folly.  Here is what I learned.

The history of steam engines dates back to the 1st century AD when the “aeolipile” was described by the Hero of Alexandria for the first time. More than 1500 years later, the primitive forms of turbines driven by the power of steam were explained by Taqi al-Din in 1551 as well as Giovanni Branca in 1629. These were either small steam jacks or escapement devices. They were mainly used by inventors to demonstrate that the power of steam shouldn’t be underestimated.

WARNING – Frustration Rant

I am beyond angry.  So frustrated I just started to cry.  Most of the time I can laugh off situations that irritate me with a sarcastic comment I keep in my head.  But today my level of anger is being written here.  So if you are holiday cheery, just delete this message because it’s not going to be nice.

UPS, and USPS are my nemesis.  At this time of year I shop online, therefore packages come to my home.  Simple, right?  I have a large note on my door because I assumed they couldn’t read the less obtrusive one, stating to leave packages at my door.  The reason being I can’t get to the door quickly and the uphill trek to the office in snowy sidewalk weather is impossible.  Even when I had the scooter, I got stuck a few times trying it.  Now I have a (roll myself) wheelchair and I can’t carry anything bigger than what would fit between two kneecaps.

Having the note and informing the complex office of this fact, I expect the delivery services to do what their paychecks have printed on them. Deliver!  I don’t envy their job, but it IS their job.  It’s cold, snowy, and I imagine delivering packages is a pita, but I can’t help that.  Part of the reason even in good weather, that I have the note, is so they don’t have to wait for me to answer the door.  What if I’m in the bathroom, or asleep?  Just leave the pkg.

Another point of contention is the office signs for packages so these services don’t need the actual person to sign for them.  I found that out when I called a med supply to ask if they sent a pkg that was late.  What I know now is this.  The complex office signs a bulk pkg signature and all the delivery service does is dump them all in the office.  So there are two factions to blame here.  This morning I called and they said yes, we’ve been getting complaints.  So I wrote an email stating they are not to sign for any of my pkgs.  Yes, I have family here and yes I can ask them to pick up the pkgs.  Office hours where the pkgs are, are not convenient for people who have jobs.So my dilemma.  I feel like the guy who wanted the cross off the tree because he just HAS to look at it every day and it’s causing him irreparable harm.  Only from my point of view, I actually have a legitimate complaint.  Think I’ll protest about this.  Anyone want to give me a ride to the UPS office?  Darn.

I called UPS and the blog about getting someone in Sierra Leone was not an exaggeration.  Calling a local 411 should get a local number.  That’s another story.

So, how’s everyone else’s day going?  Worse?  Tell me about it……I’m listening.

Chilly Attitude

The tree is up, the gifts unwrapped

 Energy’s gone, I’ve been zapped.

Decided to Google a word I don’t know

When there I see an alert about snow.

Actually it was more about cold

Only December and it’s  already old.

Finally decided to turn up the heat

Cause my legs were freezing, even my feet.

Another day accomplishing nothing

Just cleaning and doing some washing.

I think I have the winter blahs

Not even thinking of Mr. Claus.

Nope, not a thing cheers me tonight

I’m just a sad sack, what a sight.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear?

Just checking to see if you nodded off here.

My mind’s in a quandary how to lift my mood

I could always write a poem that is lewd…

No, that would be very rude.

Think I have a bad attitude.

Picture Prompt-10

She knew he would find her. The tide would take her to Hong Kong and she would find a small place to stay, away from him. The city was so large, surely she could hide for quite a while. The breeze picked up and she grabbed her hat. There was no use trying to hide her face here. If he was persistent, he would realize she took this (ferry) and question them all. It wouldn’t be long before he would know that she went to Hong Kong. But finding exactly where she was would be difficult and hopefully take long enough so she could find a permanent place to be safe.

If only she had realized what he was really like. He seemed so loving and sweet when they first met. But only after a few weeks together she knew who he actually was. Her friends were suspicious at first but then they also grew to like this charming man. And he was charming, and beautiful, so any type of fault they might have suspected, went unheeded. She dared not confide in them. He was very manipulative and would surely find her.

They drifted beside the dock. She paid the boatman and stepped up to see an enormous sight. Lights of the city, all colors and bright. Surely she could be hidden here. She ventured forth, cautious of any curious observers. She wanted to be anonymous, her safety depended on it.

After a few blocks she found a quaint rooming house. She pulled the hat down to cover most of her face. The woman at the entrance was polite and kept her questions to herself. “I have a room on this floor and one above, overlooking the street.” She chose the upstairs room. It was safer and she could use the window view to watch for him. Exhausted from the excitement and terror of the day, she fell on the bed and was asleep in seconds.

She was startled by a knock on the door. “Good morning, I have some tea for you. Would you open the door, please?”

She shook her head and smoothed her hair. Her watch read ten a.m. “I’ll be right there, thank you.”

Opening the door she noticed what a pleasant older woman her hostess was. ” I appreciate this. I didn’t expect this kindness.”

“I was a bit worried about you, dear. Is everything all right? You seemed so harried when you arrived.”

She managed a smile and took the tea tray. She sat down at the small table by the window. She was here, she was safe. Maybe she could just stay here, at least for a while. The lady was nice. If he found this place, if he came near, I wonder what she would do. Would the woman fall for his beauty and charm, or protect her ward? I don’t think I can take that chance, she thought to herself. She finished the tea, and unpacked her bag.

Something discreet, she thought, as she chose her clothing for the day. I just need to blend in, with a haircut and no makeup, it should work. She had such beautiful long hair, she reminisced, as the shears made their way. Finished with her new look, she dressed and set off to find a more permanent home.

Daily Prompt:  Conundrum

When I was a child

 Our reading was wild

We were no dumdums

Had a book named “Conundrums”.

We also had a cool deck of cards

Faced with authors and bards

So we knew them all

And we could recall

The authors and poems

Writings and tomes.

We read and played

Never dismayed

We were the subjects

Learning was the object.

When I think of my mom

She was usually calm

I think because we stayed

In the attic when we played.
