Still Photographs in a Moving Picture

Your Army jokes and laughter, your ever-smile

Diminished later, but still there

Images of you holding babies, grand babies

Smartly dressed in a uniform

Laundromat encounters

Funny as I picture you carrying me over your shoulder up those three flights of stairs

Three tiered tenement apartment, no privacy

The first time you said you were falling in love with me,

how I’d longed to say those words too

The parting, then realization

The coming together again

Many years of changes, places, growing, learning

A life you can not replace.

Allergies

I asked her to follow me into the mine. I knew she was shy, sort of a dry, cats-person, with a subtle style of life. She was a free spirit when in her own safe environment, a small cottage with dimmed light and the constant company of cats. This life had caused her lungs to be damaged and being a doctor, I thought I could help her.

She motioned her finger for me to step ahead of her into the darkened space so if I stopped suddenly, we wouldn’t collide. The abandoned salt mine was perfect for a first date that would last a lifetime. This treatment I suggested seemed to ease her breath and we forged ahead, going deeper into the chasm. We ended up at the chapel that had been constructed there and stopped to take it all in. At that time I proposed and she accepted.

First noticing this quiet beauty as a patient at my clinic, I had grown so fond of her I dismissed her to be treated by a colleague so I could ask her for a meeting. From there, we had grown close but I knew her health could be improved. Going to the salt mine seemed to help and she finally accepted the treatments which helped her breathe easily. Moving out of her home into my sparse apartment was also helpful change, and of course, just one of her cats joined us.

31 Days of October – No Treat

I think there’s no carpet in the bedroom above mine

Otherwise I wouldn’t hear the large dogs when they dine

Of course I don’t have X-ray vision

But this is what I’ve been thinking.

The dog owner works various shifts

The only loud activity he misses

Is the daytime hours between five and five

Any others he and the dogs go live.

Moving furniture at midnight or later

Playing ball with the dogs is a real irritator

Daytime is fine, it’s very quiet

It’s after eleven at night there’s a riot.

You’d think any person would realize the noise

Made when you and your dogs play with big toys

They must be large bones or things made of metal

Either or makes my ears not settle

Into a comforting era of sleep

At two in the morning I’m still counting sheep.

A Teen Lament

The guys always thought he was nervous, a jerk

Around the school halls, always seeming to lurk

Waiting for someone to be his friend

Waiting for days after school’s end

Walking the streets alone at night

Searching for something, even a fight

Just to know that he was real

To love or to hate, so he can feel

Some type of life, for better or worse

He wanted to live, feel it all, immerse.

FOWC: Bugaboo

I so love this word and really have not heard it since my mom used it a million years ago. It brings back happy memories of childhood days with her. The last time I heard it was July, 1976 and I did not know she was slowly dying of heart disease.

We drove from Colorado to Vermont on a nonstop trip, kids slept in the back of our big blue Chevy station wagon in sleeping bags and we ate our meals from a cooler. We arrived about three days later and my dad, the clean car nut (you were never allowed to drink or eat in his cars, although he smoked continuously), had a conniption fit, (another of my mom’s phrases) as we piled out.

I ran her over to the store since she didn’t drive, and we were hurrying for some reason. She stopped suddenly and I was very concerned. She said not to worry, it was just a bugaboo. We drove home a week later and a couple of weeks after that I was called with the news she was dying in the hospital. I thought if I could just fly back and take care of her she would be okay. She wasn’t. I often remember her face as we left to drive back home to Colorado. There were tears in her eyes and such a look I’ll never forget.

Fandango’s Friday Flashback 10-11-19

From 2017:

Daily Prompt:  Tame

All the ladies new her name

Their husbands also new her fame

The lady who’s dancing was not lame

You know it too, it was Mame.

Every bar had no complaints

But even men had cause to faint

Her reputation she would taint

Mame a lady?  She certainly ain’t.

Clothing left her as she danced

Kept every male eye entranced

As removal was advanced

Her body’s vision was enhanced.

I’m not reporting  any news

It all came off leaving her shoes

No mystery left, no hidden ruse

No agenda to confuse.

All the guys, some women too

Came to watch and see Mame do

A dance, unlike the old soft shoe

And admire every view.

Of course we all knew Mame

Famous stripper of Broadway fame

Now dancers aren’t so tame

The “dancing” just not the same.

MLMM First Line Friday – Wedding Bell Reds

Carson pulled at his neck tie as the air became heavy with organ music and she approached clouded in white. Quite unexpected for this raven beauty who was all about individualism. Carson thought about their nights of passion, the slightly occult feel of the love making itself, and the ceremony today was merely a legal necessity.

Watching her float up the aisle to the red and black adorned pulpit of sorts, he felt as though this might all be only a dream. Even the music endlessly droning on, seemed a strange choice, “Opus 186, Eternal Night”. He thought perhaps this was all a facade, an unwanted surprise she planned, or a prank by his bachelor friends.

As she grew closer, his anxiety grew and he felt a chill run up his spine when she finally stood beside him. He reached for her hand, finding it rough and bony. He turned to face her as her father lifted the veil in presentation. He was shocked, fell in a faint.

Carson woke up with a start. He looked across the bed and saw his fiancé sleeping peacefully, almost too angelic. He grabbed his clothes and never saw her again.
