SYW 9-5-22

1. Do you prefer tea, coffee or juice first thing in the morning? I have a homemade latte every morning and once in a while tea in the afternoon.

3. Do you prefer a take-out or to dine in a restaurant? I love dining out but like most of us, have not been in a nice restaurant for years.

2. When it comes to food, what is your favourite smell? Bacon and fresh baking bread, brownies or chocolate chip cookies. None of which I have cooked/baked for years.

4. If you are hosting a party, do you prepare the food yourself, get caterers in or ask everyone to bring something for the table? I used to have a catering business so I always did my own parties and gatherings. Now I’m unable to do much cooking etc so I would order from a restaurant or we’d have potluck.

Gratitude: What has been the highlight of your week this week? I had many highlights this week and enjoyed the company of my daughter and her daughters. A one on one visit with a granddaughter was especially nice.

Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge

***

She never believed the legends were true. All she really knew for sure was the forest was her sanctuary. Her life of abuse and hardship would disappear here in the woods. She so loved the trees and the animals that lived there—every day she would spend hours just sitting near the trees feeling sheltered and accepted.

One afternoon she had fallen asleep at her favorite spot in a mossy clearing. She yawned and stretched and slowly realized her feet were literally planted on the ground. As she stretched her arms they felt strong and she noticed they had been transformed into branches. “It’s okay, at least here and now I feel at peace.”

MLMM Wordle #286

***

The meld of scalding remarks from her granny about strangers comes easily to the older woman. “Their gods have covered them all with sins, and those liars will reap what they sow!” Granny’s mental health had taken a downturn when her husband died, three years ago.

Julie shrunk down in the booth of the pizza restaurant as her granny’s voice steadily increased in volume. Julie usually liked her outings with granny but knew her senility was sometimes too much in a public venue and a family secret was out.

Then in a pause in her tirade, the old woman said, “You think they serve ambrosia here? You know it’s always grampa’s favorite.”

Six Sentence Story

***

Small bands have one thing in common. They have hope. Musicians crowd the stage but recognition takes time. Patience even for the most gifted or talented through hard work sometimes pays off with “stardom”. Hope for fame and monetary rewards is of course a goal. A true musician mostly plays for himself.

I slip on my long red gloves, a specialty selection from my secret wardrobe, because who really needs pjs? My curves are still apparent with my silky coat opened slightly to see the heart shaped mole in my cleavage. It’s our anniversary and Joe won’t know what hit him.

The Sunday Whirl

***

“Sparrows” sit in silent stillness observing the hope on each bowed face as the man standing at the pulpit offers a map of promises from sacred text. The lack of sincerity is evident only to them; their aged minds hesitate to accept his kiss of oaths so long ago written on ancient parchment. After, as they gather away, the whisper of doubts are vast and they check old texts in secret. The vows taken have been smirched, and they summon proof to take action against the false speaker.

Throwback Thursday – Favorite Things

***

I’m a little late with this prompt but I’ve been happily busy and that’s a plus. I could probably say my favorite relative when I was a child was my great aunt Emma. She used to come up to Vermont to visit us in the summer from her home in the city.  I think I was sort of her babysitter or maybe it was vice versa but we played endless games of canasta.

My favorite TV show was American bandstand but it came on at the exact same time as my grandma’s soap opera so I rarely was able to watch it.

My favorite book was “Black Beauty”.

One of my favorite songs was “Alice Blue Gown” which my dad would play to and sing.

I went to a tiny one room school house from 1 to 6 grades and I adored my teacher. She was from New York City and her name was Mrs. Tessier. She had a large German Shepherd that she would bring to class and he would sit in a desk like a person.

I had two best friends who were sisters and we still keep in touch today.

My favorite activity was to play outside in the fields, in the woods, in the stream, or swing on my old swing on the oak tree.

Favorite holiday was Christmas because my three sisters and all of their kids would come to visit and we had a huge table with a huge meal and games and playing out in the snow. I was in charge of my nephews and nieces, took them outside to sled and what we called skiing😂

We didn’t vacation per se. It was a vacation just living where we lived. As far as toys I don’t really remember any, I was not a doll person. My favorite thing was the swing.

Dreamstime

Speak the truth and no fibbing

Are those your toes sticking out of the ribbing

You know better than to wear holey stockings

Now change them quick and no balking

Your mom’ll throw her parent diary

She’ll be mad and you should be wary

Now sit on the rug and replace those footsies

No one wants to see any bare tootsies.
