FFfAW #178 – What ya say?

It’s just across the bay. Noticing he probably wasn’t heard, repeated: It’s just across the bay.

What ya say?

Across the bay! (A bit louder and pointing towards the ferry.)

What ya say? The old man held up his hand, cupping his ear to better hear the young man’s response.

Having less patience than an ordinary soul, the young man leaned further toward the old man.

IT’S JUST ACROSS THE BAY!

Well! You don’t have to yell, young whippersnapper!

I didn’t mean to yell. I just wanted you to be able to hear me. The ferry you need is just across the bay right now, but it will be back in twenty minutes.

What ya say?

Kira’s Sunday Scribbles – Mermaid Dreams

“I really did, Mommy, I did!” Eight year old Jenny dreamed she was a mermaid. Probably most children have this dream once at least. Jenny had been an avid reader for a year and “The Little Mermaid” confirmed her belief in the Hans Christian Anderson tale.

She was fascinated with the idea of a life beneath the sea, and swimming with delightful creatures. Growing up near the ocean, trips to sandy beaches, finding broken sea shells, all treasures to her, helped to confirm mermaids exist. The mechanics of breathing didn’t concern her, even when she flailed about learning to swim. Her parents insisted she learn as a toddler. Living close to the water, it was necessary. They never realized how such a location confirmed their daughter’s dreams.

Jenny’s dream repeated until it was foremost in her mind. At school her teacher often found her daydreaming, filling the blank columns on book sides with drawings of mermaids and undersea creatures. After a worried teacher contacted her parents, they showed little concern and thought it was a temporary stage.

After another vivid dream and having a day off from school, Jenny decided to take matters into her own hands. She packed her bag with her favorite book, paper and pencils, a towel and a snack. She walked down the few feet to the beach and sat. Taking out the book, she read again. She also drew pictures of what her imagination created under the surface of the ocean.

It was time, her little mind conceived, to see for herself. She discarded the items to the towel spread out under her and stepped into the waves. As she was drawn further in, seaweed wrapped around her legs, almost a welcoming–I knew it, she thought, I am a mermaid! She walked further letting the tide carry her further from shore, until she no longer felt the sand beneath her feet. She opened her eyes to see fanciful creatures floating about, the salty water not hurting her eyes at all. She moved her arms to go deeper, catching hold of a beautiful complete shell on the bottom. She let herself drift around it, breathing in the liquid that would eventually take her life. She just drank it in, no choking, gasping for air, just a pleasant feeling of completion.

Sleeping in as usual on this Saturday morning, Jenny’s parents were unaware of their daughter’s planned mission. They took no notice of her being late to the breakfast table until they started their usual morning coffee routine, sitting on the deck, looking at the ocean. It was then they noticed a small pile of items. The things looked like Jenny’s belongings. A sudden glance between them and one ran to the beach, one ran up the stairs, both screaming their daughter’s name.

Jenny was where she had always wanted to be. She looked down to discover her legs were now formed into a mermaid tale. She was delighted they were her favorite iridescent green color. Her bathing suit had disappeared and her hair was now long and curling around her body. She just floated there a few moments knowing this was her dream come true. She looked around to see other creatures like her and joined them to swim further below the surface.

Word of the Day: Abiding

Abiding is a word that probably describes my life very well. Sometimes I think I have it all figured out and then Murphy shows up with his bag of tricks. The “always happens in threes” “omne trium perfectum” syndrome, too. My grandson and I were discussing fate, Murphy, jinxes, etc and both agreed we really have little to say in this life. Tiny specs in the universe, floating around on a big blue ball, tossed this way and that and doing our best to hold on for the few seconds we exist. What controls us? A higher being, a distant universe, the ground under our feet? It would be preposterous for me to guess.

Maybe the word for me is abide instead. I go along with what I am, what’s happening, good or bad and try to enjoy it with humor most of the time. I guess that’s abiding.

The Secret Keeper #154

Exhausted but unable to sleep, can’t get things off my mind this night. It just crossed my mind I may never be able to sleep well again. Thoughts of whys and hows and whys again keep swirling in my brain. Is this why people take drugs, to just blank their minds? I’ve done it for pain, but thinking back to that, it never really worked that well. Just like these thoughts, I can’t put anything out of my mind completely.

Never, a word people use to tell you what they would not do, no matter what, no matter what. . .that’s what I thought, I’ve said it, too. I meant it at the time, at least I think I did. Never would I go so far as I did today, never.

A person can only take so much a friend advised. That was her way of compensating me, trying to make me feel okay about my actions. But I saw her initial reaction. Even she, as my closest confidante, my oldest friend. . .I saw her face when she knew, knew what I did, knew the real me. For once in our lives, what she might have suspected all along, all these years, that I was capable of crossing this line, committing horrible acts.

I suppose I could have blamed everything on my health, my loneliness, my sorrow at events of my life. I could rely on people trying to justify my actions today, but they shouldn’t. They never knew the real me, what really happened, years ago, what made me this way. I’ve always been good at disguising my feelings. As a child when it was imperative to do so, I learned well how to hide them. It was survival, even though I didn’t know what that word meant at the time, it was instinctive to hide, cover, be what they wanted.

It wasn’t the thrill I must have thought in some warped way, completing the kill, acting out the secret fantasies I kept to myself all this time, it wasn’t anything but a disappointment. It didn’t heal anything. In fact I think now it’s worse than ever. I now have not only my own past that plagues me, but theirs also, or at least part of it. It was the surprise on their faces, the quick realization the devil they created came to collect. I mistakenly thought that would be the end of it; I would be free because they would be gone forever. How horrible now to know I’ll never be free in my mind, ever. I am what they created, fulfilled to the point I became worse even than what they were.

I really like Will Smith and can watch this one again and still get a kick out of it, “Hitch”. The last scene in the movie is the best!

While Albert makes progress, Hitchens faces his own romantic setbacks when proven techniques fail to work on Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), a tabloid reporter digging for dirt on Allegra Cole’s love life. Sunday Photo Fiction 8-11-18

I opened the cupboard, opened the fridge

And what do I see on the ridge

Of the wire rack

Man, this is out of whack!

What is it I ask

And what’s my task

To fix this for dinner?

Doesn’t look like a winner

Besides there’s a dent

Resembles cement

Don’t think I’m hungry for this

Definitely something amiss

Looks raw, unpleasant to taste

Maybe it’s not food but dental paste?

Who has the number for Pizza Time?

Hurry, order, get them on the line!

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 12

My granddaughter turns twelve today and everyone will be here after six to celebrate. A beautiful day for it, all blue skies and blossoms for sure. A nice breeze completes the picture. Some gifts include a dress with planets all over it, leggings to match, Barnes and Noble gift card and a device to add to the robot car she made at the UW STEM classes. Should be great fun! She’s the middle one!
