FOWC: Energy and Time to Write: Dialogue only

I just said I don’t have the energy anymore.

–But that’s not what you really meant, was it?

What are you implying?

–I’m not implying, I’m stating a fact.

And what fact is that?

–That you don’t care.

Don’t care? After thirty years, you’re telling me I don’t care?

–Yes, you don’t care anymore and it kills me.

Look, I’m right here, aren’t I? I’ve been here always.

–You’re here, but you’re not HERE.

I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. Am I here or not?

–I’m talking about right here, beside me. Like you used to be.

Okay, now I’m really confused. I’m here, in bed, with you, and nowhere else.

–Yes, but not really.

Okay, I give up. Why not?

–Because when I came to bed, next to you, you said you didn’t have the energy anymore.

I still don’t understand, I’m here, I’m just tired. I don’t have the energy to be with you, you know, WITH you, not tonight.

–That’s what I mean, you’re here but you’re not.

Are you TRYING to drive me nuts, or what? I’m here, I love you, I’m just tired.

–Alright, forget it. I was just trying to express my feelings, be honest with you.

Are we done? I’m going to sleep.

–I guess we are, . . .done. . .a good word for it.

MLMM First Line Friday

The sun simmered red as it slunk towards the jagged horizon.  Another day gone, he thought to himself. How can such a beautiful sunset appear after a day like this?

It started out well, everyone smiling at breakfast, anxious to get on with their day. He arrived at the office early and even signed that much needed client. He was proud of himself for it and ate lunch with his supervisor in celebration. Joe worked hard in his life, married young and had three children early in their time together. It worked out well even though they had to scrimp here and there some months. He was a happy man, not ecstatically so, but probably more than the average man.

Joe’s wife, Mary was also working, helping to make things run smoothly, while their three children made them both proud. College tuition loomed for the oldest, but Mary’s contribution would help. Scholarship applications were furiously mailed out and their life was a happy one.

This afternoon Joe received the phone call no one ever wanted. His son was involved in a bicycle car accident and was in the hospital. Joe and Mary stood by their oldest son’s bedside, praying for a miracle.

Going home to bed, Joe looked again at horizon, shook his head in sorrow. Joe and Mary both received no respite that night. Their life seemed over with, even though their two remaining children were perfectly healthy. Their first born was gone. Wondering why was on their minds, why this tragedy, and why inflicted on them? Joe took one last glance at the now clouded moonlit night. We did our best, so why? Was it all for nothing? He received no answer.

Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction

He came in with a whoosh

Beautiful, colorful

Hot and bright

That’s how I remember it. I was sitting there, reading, trying to concentrate on the day’s assignment when he appeared. The library is a quiet restful place, usually; sometimes quite boring if you need to study a subject you’re not interested in. That was the day I met him.

The light of his being was mesmerizing. No one else even seemed to notice. Didn’t they see it? I confess I think he was there only for me. The dreamt for, the wanted, the amazing comet of a man.

August 16: Flash Fiction Challenge

Word of the Day: Vex

Zoomed up with steer horns on his car

Left it at the curb, strolled into the bar

“Howdy partners, my name is Tex”

Hands on hips, muscles flexed

“Can I get a drink?” He queried the man

“Sure thing, bud, I do what I can”

Tex leaned on the bar, sat on the stool

Sweat from his glass started to pool

“So, where ya from”, barkeep asked, perplexed

Strangers caused the locals to vex

Look down their noses, over their specs

“Not to worry, barman, not going to stay,

Just want a cool drink, I’ll be on my way”.

MLMM Tale Weaver #184 “Time’s Up” and MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt: Rorschach

“Times up!” The doctor stood up suddenly from his desk. It was his way of making a point. “Well?” He stared at the teen, impatient and frustrated by the absence of response. Doctor Smythe had seen these charlatans before. Spoiled kids who tried to get their parents’ attention with odd behavior. The patient looked up from the paper image and had a vacant expression on his face.

The image was not only frightening to the young man, but quizzical, too. Should he tell the doctor what he really sees in this image? Can he rely on his help or will he lock him in a room like his parents did? Michael started feeling panic. He felt the acid from his stomach slowly creeping up into his mouth. His body started to sweat, fear penetrated his brain. He dared not look at the image again, the horror of it was too much.

To see on paper the image that plagued him day and night, especially in his dreams, cemented the fact the monster does exist. It’s captured here in small form, but he’s seen it much larger, encompassing him when he’s alone. It disappears if someone enters the room, but returns even larger when they’re gone. Not only does it get bigger, it stifles him, almost choking him with a wretched odor.

Michael’s brain decides that Dr. Smythe is the creator of this monster. Why else would he have a picture of it and make him stare at it, asking for a response? Michael reasoned he had no choice. Once the doctor was removed, the monster would be gone also. Dr. Smythe had to go.

Three Line Tales #133 – Polluted Palate

“Yech! That’s horrible smelling and it’s going up my nose and into my throat, tastes terrible!”

“I think so too. Humans must not realize we have extremely keen senses, constantly polluting our environment!” The two lion cubs lived in an open area of the Safari park sanctuary. Constant visitation by humans in all types of vehicles was harming their air quality. Unfortunately, the funds to keep the park open as a sanctuary required allowing visitors, subsequently keeping the park a viable place for these abandoned cubs.

Crossing the road, the siblings walked to the nearby fresh water stream to drink.
