Surprise

I knew my sister always called me “ol kid”. I liked it. A few days ago she told me my grandparents called me “old hundred”. (When they weren’t yelling, “whippersnapper”). I asked her why. She said I always had a serious look on my face as a toddler, maybe that was why. Then she sent me this:

I looked a bit more and found a hymn. Anyone else have an idea?

MLMM Wordle #210

Image: Flickr.com

Today was not a good day. She felt frumpy, her broad forehead was no longer compact and her whiskers were beginning to droop even when she was alert. Her once golden fur was now pale in comparison to her young huntress days. Her protector, her mate seemed less interested and his blinkered vision of her disappearing youth reminded him of her age.

Gazing into the morning sun, she took the warmth in like a sponge, easing her weary bones. She could leave the pride, lead a solitary life, but would she survive? Trying to restrain that thought each day, her leonine instincts prevented her from acting on it.

The pride’s history was ripe with her past daring, her prowess, and as she thought back on her fifteen year adventures, the formula needed then did not compare to the present. It was time for the strong new young lioness’ to take over.

Daily Addictions Prompts, Week 36

Every day Marie never wanted to contribute something less than average to her editor. She never expected jubilation upon his reading, but even a swift scan of her work producing a smile made her feel good.

Marie was often asked to ferret out controversial subject matter, but she was always careful not to diminish the characters in the story, just state the facts. In doing so she was not afraid anyone would retaliate with a wrongful suit against the newspaper.

MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt 9-9-18

If you forget me, it will be okay

We never made promises

We never even met

We wrote each other meaningful sentences

We loved each other through those words

I only heard your voice a few times

Affection from written, not spoken

Time changes circumstances

We have changed

Your needing me has waned

Don’t worry if you forget me

I’ll still remember us.

MLMM Saturday Mix 9-8-18

Sitting there freezing with clumps of trash near. Only a tattered covering for warmth, no pillow for her sleepy head. A homeless child we wish was a vision from centuries past, but sadly, seen today.

Sunday Photo Fiction 9-9-18 and Putting My Feet in the Dirt 9

“Welcome, mate! I’ve had a few morning mishaps but everything’s fine now. Would you like to take a turn?”

The bagpipe maker

With tartan displayed

Showing the pipes he has made

Crafting them is a hardy task

Helped in part by a handy flask

He offered a set to an observer there

Hoping he might purchase his wares

The gentleman picked up the bag

And into his lungs took a big drag

Out came a noise that surprised even him

Glad he had always worked at the gym

A sound so loud

Delighting the crowd

No squeaks, no rude blows

His talent he shows

The bagpipe maker was taken aback

Now knowing he’d have no customer lack

The crowd around the piper cheered

Enjoying use of the musical gear.

Monday Movie Early

Based on a short story by Rudyard Kipling, this adventure film follows the exploits of Peachy Carnehan (Michael Caine) and Danny Dravot (Sean Connery), English military officers stationed in India. Tired of life as soldiers, the two travel to the isolated land of Kafiristan, where they are ultimately embraced by the people and revered as rulers. After a series of misunderstandings, the natives come to believe that Dravot is a god, but he and Carnehan can’t keep up their deception forever.

Nominations: Academy Award for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay

☆☆☆☆

I decided to put this on early so you might catch it on TCM this weekend. It is one of the movies with Sean Connery and Michael Caine who are at their comic best in this. I love this scene:

“Only a few more miles to go, Stephan. You can do it. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Remember it’s the life we’ve dreamed of, the promises we made to each other.” Stephan trudged along beside his brother, heavily relying on the walking stick he was grateful to have. Nicholas didn’t know how much his leg was paining him. Stephan had not the heart to tell him before they started out this morning. Nicholas was correct, they spent months planning this trip.

The day started out well, they had packed most everything the week before and Stephan was confident they could find some fresh fare along the way. So far the walking was fairly easy and the trail not too steep. This being the fourth day of their trip, Stephan decided to look for some herbs and berries he knew were around their campsite area. Being a practical person, Stephan had researched the natural bounty before they left. He even had pictures on his phone to make sure he harvested the correct items.

It was on this hunt Stephan fell into a small leaf covered hole and badly twisted his ankle. His brother Nicholas had gone in a different direction to gather firewood. Not wanting to disappoint his brother, Stephan found a stick to help him walk and took the berries and herbs back to the camp. After a good night’s sleep, Stephan had hoped his ankle had improved enough to continue their journey.

Walking ever slower, Nicholas finally stopped and asked what was wrong. Stephan had to admit his injury. Nicholas took it in stride, wrapped the ankle securely and set up a new campsite. “We’ve waited a long while for this, and we have the time, so no worries, brother. We’ll rest until you can walk easily again. Now what fine fare did you find on that fateful walk?” The two men had a laugh and all would be well.

Time to Write #38 – The Last to Know

“You have everything, right?” Mary kept hurrying, reminding her mother so they could be quickly rid of this place.

After the headlines had outed Mary as the Prince’s secret lover, she couldn’t stay there any longer. It started as a casual flirtation, before she knew who he really was. Apparently he spent a lot of time outside the palace walls and his adventures were many.

Mary spent most of her free time taking care of her mother in their small apartment. Having a life outside home and office was a relief to her. These circumstances led to her affair with the Prince, her man of mystery, which she accepted without question. Their meetings were always in dark cafes or nightclubs, but she was so lonely, did not give it a suspicious thought.

Walking to work and stopping for her usual coffee, she was shocked to see the daily newspaper headlines. Glaring back at her was a photo of her in a seductive dress sitting on her lover’s lap. Only the headline revealed his true identity. Mary scooped up the paper and went home to pack.

Time To Write: Sentence Starter 38 [Creative Writing Prompt]

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt #71

Taking her usual route to work, stopping for coffee, a newspaper headline caught her eye. Large, and the adjoining picture was shocking. What happens now everyone knows her secret life? What was a reporter doing in that club? She couldn’t help herself from grabbing the paper.

“MYSTERY WOMAN MEETS SECRETLY WITH THE PRINCE!” Details below.
