Fandango’s Flash Fiction #19

He was ready

Had his bag packed

All the necessities

Comb, razor, deodorant

Jeans, sweater, socks

He wore her favorites to meet her

Laced boots because she loved real leather

Easy pants to comfortably loll around in

The black turtleneck she often borrowed

Brown over jacket in case he needed to warm her bare shoulders

They were meeting once more

He took the train

Goodbyes were never easy.

Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge #19

Oh, Gramps!

He said, “chow down it’s good for you.”

I saw brown mush in a bowl of blue

“Eat up, it’s great, it’s called bulgur.”

Tried it, but the taste was vulgar.

“You young people,” sounding wise,

“Need to eat better,” he advised.

“Bulgur wheat is a fine staple

Add some syrup, maybe maple?”

Wheat I like when it’s in bread

This mushy stuff I really dread

“It’s been around for years and years.”

They probably liked it after many beers.

Argument over, I pushed it aside

Left the room with a quickened stride.

Paula’s three things challenge today: pants, intercom, beetle

The team was ready, all dressed in their new baseball uniforms, with striped shirts and white pants. The old intercom crackled as the announcer asked for the referees to come onto the field for the anthem. The first game of the youth baseball season was about to begin.

As the music stopped and the home team took their positions, the six year old pitcher seemed to be dancing on the mound. The referee yelled a “straighten up, we’re ready to start” warning to the lad, but his movements were similar to a Michael Jackson tribute. The umpire also yelled, but his “play ball” was completely ignored by the boy who’s movements now involved pulling down his new white pants.

Shocked parents were heard mumbling “oh, my god”, and other exclamations as the boy flailed about. The pitcher’s coach came running and discovered the problem. It seems a large beetle had invaded the private parts of the boy’s uniform.

MLMM Wordle #139

Granny Smith apples, who doesn’t love that sweet tart taste? Yes, that’s what I was thinking as I crunched on the green delight on my way home. There was a frosty feeling in the air that wet afternoon, as the sky turned dark with thunder clouds and I was afraid lightning might strike any moment.

I repressed my fear as I ducked into a doorway and a bright bolt shogged its way next to my feet. I regretted my insipience at starting on this trek until the clouds turned into evening sunlight as they always did.

I tried the doorknob, thinking the building looked abandoned and I could take refuge inside with no problems. As soon as the door gave way I could feel a wispy presence. It was not a vision, more a feeling, and I felt I was not alone. I expected to hear a chain dragging its way behind some ethereal ghost of a being, and a chill came over me. Thinking it was the afternoon weather and not my fear, I stepped further into the space.

Suddenly a stutter escaped my lips as my host leaped into my arms. I dropped the apple and found a damp furry creature had decided I was her saving grace. I was relieved and thought the kitten was also happy for a companion. We spent a few minutes commiserating about the threatening thunder and then I took her home with me.
