Writing Reader Visual Prompt – Ball

What? I thought as I saw him there. He told me he wasn’t coming. My father pulled me along into the room–our arms joined, I had no choice. I couldn’t take my eyes off Peter and would have stumbled over the ottoman had I not been linked to my father. He barely noticed because he was propelling me to meet the new Minister who was a potential husband for young women like me.

Peter looked resplendent in the new fashion of the day. His blue eyes shone, so beautifully complimented by the dark blue velvet waistcoat. He must have felt my stare as suddenly he looked upon me, as if I were there unexpectedly too. I quickly turned away, as I felt the blood rush into my pale cheeks. He came and he was not alone. My heart sank. I had built a fantasy in my mind of a future with Peter, a fantasy of course, but not unusual for an unmarried woman of eighteen. My sisters were all married and mothers by the age of eighteen. This fact all the more clear to me as my father insisted I meet every eligible man in the county.

I heard Peter’s laugh and it pierced my heart as if I held a thorny rose to my breast. I strained to hear his conversation as my father introduced me to the Minister. I mumbled a few polite words and managed a small curtsy as was the expected form, but my attention was across the room.

I excused myself to retrieve a glass of punch and to be closer to Peter and his companion. I barely lifted the glass when I felt his presence too close to my side. Once again the rush of color to my face as I felt his breath on my neck. “Tomorrow?” was the only word I heard and then he left.

Word of the Day: Epic

Charlie ran into the backyard with some parts for the experiment. Joe’s mom let them play there undisturbed. Joe’s mom loved her soap operas and sweet tea in the afternoon and summer was always fun in Joe’s backyard. Three small boys gathered here almost every afternoon and let their imaginations run wild.

Jack was the most creative and today his new idea was coming to fruition. It had taken the three inventors a few days of snooping, sneaking and scavenging their own homes and garages to compile all the necessary items to complete Jack’s idea. Today was the day! Three anxious young geniuses gathered around the pile of a soon to be rocket. It had taken Jack a few attempts to steal the old manual from his dad’s library where “no kids were allowed”, but he accomplished it and now the three poured over the instructions.

Finally thinking every piece of equipment necessary laid before them, they all looked at each other at once with huge smiles. Jack read the manual and the other two started assembling the materials. Jack offered aloud what they were all thinking, “This is going to be epic!”

Masterpiece Theater on PBS

If you love behind the scenes of your favorite television series or movies, you might enjoy this look at the new season of “Endeavour”. It is among my favorite television shows, along with “Grantchester” and more. Have you checked out your local commercial free offerings on PBS? I think you’ll become addicted as I have.

Word of the Day: Nurture

My granddaughter Ry went in on the 20th for another hip surgery. Two years ago Christmas she had two separate hip surgeries that were unsuccessful.

We think it went well this time and on Monday she will have the other hip done. Her mom and sister made a “smores” quilt for her recovery time. It serves as a way to nurture her.

FOWC: Inventory

I never minded taking inventory when I worked retail. It was always done after the store closed, you could dress casually, and joke around, have a soda and even a snack, definite no no’s during business hours.

It afforded unrestricted access to your coworkers, getting to know them better. When I did this job later in life as a temp worker, it was also enjoyable.

MLMM Saturday Mix – Sexting

“Jules, dear, are you familiar with the word sexting?” Jules’ cheeks turned bright red. “I’m only asking because I see a text here on your phone. It’s from, I suppose, one of your new “friends” ?”

“Mother, I told you my phone is private!”

“Texting is never private, you should be aware of that.”

“And you should respect my privacy.”

“My roof, my rules. She seems to think you are “god’s gift”. What’s that about? Are you having sex? Are you using protection?”

It’s just on the phone. I would never blow my own trumpet, Mother, but she did seem, uh. . .content.”

MLMM Tale Weaver #228

Cooking, well I assume you are speaking of the type of cooking where food is involved, 🙄—fresh, frozen, canned or dried, and also edible, which was sometimes questionable in my household over the years. I have always tried to make tasty meals, healthy and appealing as far as the actual plate of food is concerned. A plate consisting of all one color or one texture food does not appeal to anyone and your eyes and body prefer variety as well.

I dabbled in catering for a while with a friend, a wonderful Italian woman who was a spectacular cook and we worked hard trying to be successful at a home based business. We had a lot of fun and of course a few arguments, but all in all we enjoyed it. It was shortlived however, because an old back injury of mine acted up with all the standing, bending and heavy lifting, etc, so I had to quit. It was fun and satisfying while it lasted.

My family always ate what was put in front of them with no complaints. No one in our home was ever force fed foods they disliked, and only once were we all so disappointed (disgusted) that we took turns throwing the food in the sink. I was on the Weight Watcher diet and cutting out sugar for all of us, trying to eat healthier in the 70s. I had made a WW dessert, a chocolate mousse. It looked great, tasted horrid! (On a side note, I do not eat anything with artificial ingredients such as sweetener that is so popular in diet anything, or fake butter or salt.) It’s just me, no offense to anyone who does, or needs to.

A few dishes that are family favorites are chicken and dumplings, stuffed pork chops, vegetable soup, macaroni and cheese, molasses cookies and Denver chocolate cake. I rarely cook anymore because it’s too difficult from a sitting position. Most days I do not miss having to provide a nice meal everyday to family but enjoy the rare occasion when I receive a request for something.

Personally, I go through periods of cravings for certain things, such as french fries, pizza, or chocolate, but it’s rare. My usual want is good tasting fresh fruit and vegetables which seem hard to come by. It may look good, but there’s no taste. And avocados which I love? The worst, they are expensive and you never know what you’re going to get. Now a box of chocolates per Forrest Gump, I like those surprises!

Cooking healthy is easy these days with all the products such as parchment paper, or pans that do not require being greased. In my mother’s day, butter, lard, and bacon grease were all used – sometimes for flavor, or to make a pan easier to clean. Microwave ovens for some people, are miracles themselves, being convenient for quick thawing or a frozen meal. I basically use mine to reheat something I’ve cooked or warm coffee.

Sammiscribbles Prompt – He Lost in Translation

I never said that!

Yes, you did. I can hardly believe it, George, it was a hateful thing to say.

What? Surely you know I would never compare you to her, Paula! My goodness, never would I be so rude!

You were, and you did, so I guess you think of me that way. Really, George, have you always felt that way about me and you’re just saying it now?

Believe me, you misunderstood what I said, please, Paula, you know I love you for you.

A lot of things have been said over the years, but this? This is unforgivable. You should leave.

I only said that you were acting like her. (the ex-wife)
