Prompt #3826-Float

I think it would be nice to float, on a white puffy, soft cloud. Anywhere you want to go, completely free and unencumbered by a plane, or balloon, or even wings. Just the softness of the cloud. From your perch you could see all the happenings going on in the world, but just watching, unable to act in any way. You could not prevent something you knew was going to occur or influence the outcome. Possibly this floating would not be as pleasant as I first imagined.

Our dog Smokey

Can’t sleep again, so thought I would write about the favorite dog in my life. We lived across the street from a large family of girls. The oldest one worked at a recreation center for the city park service.  A Volkswagen drove by the rec center and threw out a box of puppies and drove on.  Our neighbor brought one home but her mom said she couldn’t keep it.  The girl brought him over to our house.  This little pup had huge paws and melted our hearts immediately.  By the time my husband came home from work, it was too late for him to say no.  He also fell for this little German Shepard who we found out later, was part wolf.

He grew and grew!  He was so lovable, the neighbors all liked him, as he hung over our chain link dividers to be petted.  He never jumped the fence although he could have easily just slumped over it.  He was the guard dog for our closest neighbors and they all had respect for his bark.  The people who came to check the meters knew to knock first so I could put Smokey in the garage or in the house.  He was very uncomfortable in the house.  He liked to be outside even if it was freezing and snowing.

One time a meter reader came in the backyard without telling me.  I heard Smokey and went to check on him.  The man was frozen in fright but Smokey was laying down about ten feet from him.  He looked at the man and then me, back and forth, asking what to do.  He was this kind of dog, very intelligent with a gentle heart, but also my protector.  I let the man sweat a bit.  The signs on the gates clearly stated to come to the door first before entering the back.  I then said, “it’s okay, Smokey”, and he came over by me, never taking his eyes off the man.

We had three cats at the time, an old mother cat and two kitties.  They all came from the Dumb Friends League shelter at different times.  But they stayed inside and Smoke stayed outside.  I was on a special diet and ate a lot of baked chicken.  I had baked four breasts for meals and had them sitting on a cookie sheet on top of the stove.  Luckily because of that I locked the cats downstairs.  I came home from my walk and there was the empty pan on the stovetop. The door from the garage to the kitchen was open.  The wind had blown the door open and I’m sure the chicken smell invited Smokey inside.  He had come in and lifted those chicken breasts up off the pan so carefully you couldn’t even see any evidence of them being slid off the pan.  I had to laugh.  I’m glad they were boneless!  I went out and there he was, sheepish look on his face.

I loved this dog and still do.  In fact I get tears when I dream of him or think of his last moments.  He started walking strangely and I made a vet appointment right away.  We had a great vet, that’s another story…..he looked him over and wanted to do an exploratory surgery.  I took Smokey in and the vet took him back.  Just before he went through the door, Smokey looked back at me with this, “it’ll be okay, mom” look.  I’ll never get that look out of my mind.  I’m crying now just writing about it.  The vet called me a few hours later and said he had cancerous tumors choking all of his organs and    couldn’t   believe he was still even walking around.  He asked if he should wake him or let him sleep.  We chose to let him sleep.  I’ll never forget that look on his face.  He was saying goodbye.

Picture Prompt-28

I don’t know what to do now. I am sitting here like a fool. I took hours getting prepared. Hair done, nails done, makeup applied by a professional, all that money down the drain. For what? To be sitting here in this place, alone? Abandoned like an old pair of shoes? Why I answered that text I’ll never know. He seemed reasonable. Jane knew him to be a good guy. What was she thinking, recommending him to me?

And here I am, angry at both of them, sitting by the side of the road, waiting for my brother. My brother is always reliable, but what will he think of me, here in this place? Dressed up, and sitting in the bushes! I know he’ll be upset. I’m just glad I had my phone to call him. He’ll come, give me the usual lecture, and take me home safely. I can count on it.

Unlike the creep who left me here. Of course it was my decision to get out of the car. I’m just glad he let me out. He could have forced me to stay with him…..I can’t think of it, what could have happened. Jane must not really know him, otherwise how could she have set me up? Or maybe she did set me up, on purpose. You never know who is a true friend these days. He was an obnoxious, self centered, octopus. Rude, and overbearing, and dangerous. So angered by my refusal of his advances, he let me out. I guess I should consider myself lucky to be sitting here after all.

There’s my brother coming, finally. I can’t wait to get home.

Daily Prompt:  Tempted

There are very few of us exempted

From the sin of being tempted

I say a sin ’cause people think

Stuff you eat or stuff you drink

Is temptation, sure enough

Resisting it, very tough.

Seems like you can’t get enough

Sure to make your tummy rough.

There’s all types of rude temptation

Laughing at someone’s elation,

Talking without reservation

Even sexual sensation.

Let’s not go there for this post

Or in hell I may roast

Better keep to drink and food

Wouldn’t want to be thought rude.

Oh well, it may be just too late

Bloggers, I accept my fate

To read or not read, that is the question..

I should have kept to thy digestion.

Just-Jot-It-January 4, 2017- Pro tip

Bothered by sales calls from all different numbers across the United States, I asked my cell phone company how to spam these calls.  Their suggestion for a free way to do it, was to assign a different ringtone from my regular one to these unwanted callers.  So I didn’t answer but saved the numbers under various names like “grrr” and gave them all the same ringtone.  Now if they call over and over I know who it is.

Animal Friend of the Week – Bonnie

Let me introduce myself.  My name is Bonnie and I’m five years old.  I have been in two previous homes, but the last one had other dogs that were mean to me.  In April last year I found my permanent home.  I live with two parents and four children whom I love.  There are four other children who stay here when they’re not in college.

I’m so grateful to be in this loving home.  I have a big back yard I can explore, and two beds and toys of my own to play with.  Each child loves and plays with me.  I stay outside my mom’s door at night to protect her.  I am very friendly with people, but other dogs make me anxious.  I am quiet and well behaved and love my family very much.

Picture Prompt-27

“Up, up and away, in my beautiful balloon”

Oh, sorry, that’s a song written by composer Jimmy Webb.

Colors drifting skyward

I feel a bit awkward

Floating with no tether

Thank god for the weather

Sunny and rather warm

Oh look down there! That farm

And the rows, perfect lines

Suppose they use a combine?

Look at those lakes, oh I wish

We’d take a pole to catch some fish.

This balloon is getting very high

Wonder if you can feel clouds in this sky?

The mountains over there

Getting near would give a scare.

Floating, drifting in the breeze

My nerves just starting to feel ease.

Such a beautiful way

To spend my day.

Daily Prompt:  Crossing

My first thought with this Prompt took me back to when I was a child in Vermont. My sister and I used to go down to the brook, which ran a long ways over our property. Narrow, not deep, and rocky, but we were not dismayed. Determined to build a swimming hole of sorts, we tirelessly took pieces of the banks and dammed up the brook. “More mugs!” We would shout at each other, meaning we needed more clumps of grassy dirt bank to fill in the holes in the dam.  We would be crossing from side to side when a hole in the dam burst.  We said “mugs”, and where it came from or who started it, I have no idea. But we loved the whole adventure, the water getting deeper around our knees, and the feeling of success running through our heads. It never occurred to us that by using the mugs from the sides of the brook, that we were also widening the dam area! Never daunted, covered in mud, we had the best time. Just one of many delicious times we had together.

None of the pictures I found looked like I remember our brooks, but this is similar.  We didn’t have as much brush on the sides, and it wasn’t as wide as the bottom of the picture presents.

Yogurt?  Yes or No?

You have to be seriously insane to eat yogurt.  I never touch anything milk related and soured milk?  Forget it.  But in a pleasant job on the first floor of an office building, I cooked, cleaned, sold sundries, etc to office workers.  It was a fun job.  The owner, my boss, was a great woman, clearly the opposite of me.  Tall, blonde, beautiful wife of a Denver Bronco.  She ate yogurt everyday and insisted I try it.  The brand we sold was Meadowgold.  I tried it.  It was like nonguilt ice cream!  Of course here I can’t get it and even in a town in CO where they had a Meadowgold dairy business, it wasn’t available.  So I’ve tried others.  My current favorite is the Noosa brand.

The reason I say you have to be out of your mind to eat it, is you take off the foil cover and what you see is disgusting!  Watery white and pinkish blue (blueberry flavor) soggy looking mess.  I bypass this by stirring it thoroughly and achieve a mini blueberried creamy delight.  I love ice cream, but yogurt isn’t bad for a (sweetish) treat.
