“Bernice, I said no more birthdays, and I meant it! Are you trying to start a fire?” Benjamin Arnold Buddee was turning ninety years old today. It was a huge milestone and his wife wanted to celebrate. He preferred to spend it quietly. Bernice could still make her way around the kitchen and wanted Benny to know it. She also took pride on being able to fix up a good tasting, beautiful cake.
Benny tried to keep that scowl on his face, but it was impossible. Bernice knew he would never get angry over something like this, but he did love to tease her.The love of his life had that well known expression of pride that she donned every time she tried to please him. And she had always tried to please Benny. The two had a long and loving relationship for over sixty years, and this day was no exception. Sixty years and four children, twelve grandchildren and two great grandkids on the way. Benny had to smile thinking of what a blessing his family was. Most of them were probably on the way to join them already.
Bernice had lighted the candles for just a second so that when everyone was ready for the big moment, they would be quicker to flame. After blowing them out she made sure the rest of the party essentials were set up. The Road Runner plates and napkins were difficult to find locally. She was fortunate to have her granddaughter help order them online. The cartoon characters were Benny’s favorite and when you’re turning ninety you need a bit of fun. Bernice was arranging everything just so when it occurred to her to check their supply of ice cream. Opening the freezer she was reminded that her doctor had put a ban on the sweet dessert after her last checkup. No matter, it was Benny’s treat, his favorite Coffee Supreme. He was in no danger of heart disease, even at ninety. He had been a laborer all his working life and still in great physical condition.
The door flew open as the smaller children burst in to give their grandpa a birthday hug. Bernice smiled contentedly and took a seat in the rocker. She was tired and decided to let the rest of the family finish the decorations.
Benny came over and leaned in to give Bernice a peck on the cheek. “You’re always right, Bernie, thank you.”

Only a few more yards and I’ll be far enough from this barricade to detonate the bomb. Fairly bold of me tramping around with it in daylight, but I have no choice. It’s the only one left and I have to make it count. The devastation has been heartbreaking, but I can’t think of it now. I have to keep walking, get past the troops in front of me and keep traveling behind them. They’ll be moving out soon and taking the injured with them.
After I set the bomb in place, it’s my job to scavenge dog tags and other personal items from our dead and meet back up with the rest. It’s sorrowful we can’t take the time to honor them with a proper burial. That’s one of the disasters of war.
I’m almost there. Once the bomb is strategically placed, I’ll have to run back to gather the personals, a very sad task.

Time for ceenphotography.com SYW questions. Thanks again C for letting us know more about each other through your challenge. Not really a challenge, more like probing questions meant to let us into your world. I’m interested, how many of you took a moment of silence today at 3:00pmET in the US?🇺🇸🤗
Question one- my favorite monuments is in Washington, DC, where I observed the statue of seated President Abraham Lincoln. I was certainly impressed at how large it was. As a child I had dreamed of seeing it in person. Only took me forty years.🎆
Question two – I like short vacations such as getting away for the weekend. However, my favorite vacation was a long one, two weeks in Hawaii.🌋 I haven’t been on a vacation for many years. Too many!🕶
Question three – one of my favorite National Parks is Mesa Verde in Colorado. Truly an amazing sight.
Question four – Oh, this is fun! My fantasy vacation would be in a secluded cabin, wheelchair access of course, to and from the surrounding woods and lake. Now that would be ideal.🏔🔥🥐🍷☕️🛶🏞👍🏻
I am grateful that the closeby tornado a few days ago, did not cause harm to my grandson, home alone with the dog! I am looking forward to this week being the last week of school. 🎉🎊🎈☀️🌝🌟⭐️

Using the military theme I have chosen a favorite of my childhood. We marched from our school to the cemetery, each waving a small United States flag. We sang this song and other military themes as we went to place the flags on the grave sites. This yearly tradition gave us, even as children, respect for the fallen.
This song was composed in 1863 by Patrick Gilmore. This version by Mitch Miller.
I always was claustrophobic. That is why I chose this way of leaving the world. The thought of being buried deep under the earth in a locked box didn’t appeal to me, so I chose cremation. I’m not a big funeral lover either, and chose not to have one. I wanted to be remembered as my healthy self, cracking a joke, which I did not do well, by the way, or laughing. Comedians say that another comedian’s funeral hears the best jokes ever. I’m sure the deceased would enjoy that.
I chose this end. Straight from the morgue in a cardboard box to the crematorium. We had one locally when I was young. It was a joke for all of us, with a very creepy underbelly. It had a tower, not what you’re thinking, no smoke rising out of it, but a glass enclosed window structure at the peak. When the sun shone on the glass it turned the colors of flames. Naturally everyone assumed they were seeing actual fire. It would be curious to know exactly what they were trying to depict with that tinted glass.
Of course I’ll never know. I’ll never know exactly what caused me to be here in this urn either. It’s against the rules. Who knew there would be rules after you’re dead?
