SYW 2-13-23

Three of this week’s questions have been provided by Marla. Thank you Marla!

If you could rename yourself, what name would you choose and why? As a child I always wanted to be named Elizabeth. (Beth). My sister’s name was Jo in real life. Probably the book “Little Women” was an influence.

If you were tasked with naming a new star, what would you name it and why? Pi after my granddaughter.

If you were a story/comic book hero, what would your name be and why? I have one already: Joe Ledger😂

If animals could talk, which would be the rudest? Definitely cats

I am grateful my daughter’s home is receiving a new furnace. Theirs has been out all week and it has been COLD!

The Sunday Whirl 😳

You could look up every culture’s dictionary, in every era of time, and find out who used certain words, and probably who proudly decided it should be a word in the first place. Then you might be sorry as you realized who and how many changes were made to the original.

Here and now in the US we are experiencing a few ignorant people in political arenas that want to make me think that years of education and everything I’ve seen, read or experienced in person that has influenced my life, is wrong.

I must have been in another world or time growing up and what I saw and heard was all lies. Else, how can those people say and do these things? How do they get away with spouting all this discrimination and hate and subsequent actions? Are they owned by someone’s money? How do they sidestep the laws and the subpoenas that try to bring them to justice? Can you answer that please? I really want to know!

REBLOG: from Maggie @ https:fromcavewalls.wordpress.com/2023/02/13/. It’s One of Those Mornings

The Washington Post had an article over the weekend concerning bills advancing through the Iowa and Minnesota legislatures. The subject? Rolling back child labor laws to allow children as young as 14 to work in industrial meatpacking plants and 16 year olds to work in construction.

This is supposedly being suggested to address labor shortages, but is it really? Adults need income levels that allow them to survive and maybe even include benefits enabling workers to care for their families. Businesses know they can hire younger people for less money and without offering benefits.

If you have followed my blog for a while, you know I grew up in the country. As kids, we all helped out. We did not get paid when we picked beans or strawberries or shucked corn or helped string beans. It was the survival of the family and it took all of us to get…

Six Sentence Stories

***

What is it about a date? A day marked with a red circle on a wall calendar or a reminder on your phone, but some dates are forever etched in your mind, and need no reminder. For me, my mothers death, July 31, 1976 will be at the top of the list, then comes my husband’s, July 13, 2013. I just now see the two dates are transposed numbers—weird! My wedding on July 3, 1966 and my daughter’s wedding on February 6, 1993 are also etched in my mind. The dates of two cancer diagnoses also forever known.

Rory’s Morning Dawdler

1. Everything except small keyboards for old fingers. I’m not an author and don’t feel the pressure they do. I have fun.
2. I already have a backpack with essentials I take whenever I leave the house. I would add fresh water, peanut butter and crackers🤪.
3. Yes. While someone else was driving and it was scary. Most everyone here carries guns in their cars. A year ago a bullet grazed my daughter’s head—no injury result and they were just driving through a neighborhood here in Cheyenne, kids in the back seat😡
4. Years ago I embarrassed everyone by asking a waitress “when are we going to get some water” after we had been seated and ignored for twenty minutes—a long time with little kids. In my defense I was heavily medicated at the time🙄True story.

Books

First book in new Quantum Earth series: “Outland”: “When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, it’s up to six university students and their experimental physics project to prevent the end of civilization.” Goodreads

The second book in the series is “Earthside” and I liked the first one, sci-fi by Dennis E Taylor, “Outland”. I looked forward to the sequel “Earthside” but was disappointed. I love the narrator, Ray Porter and many other of Taylor’s books, especially the “Bobiverse” series. Humor and wit in the Bob books hooked me on Taylor.

Bobiverse series: This series has two especially lovable “characters“.

“Bob Johansson has just sold his software company and is looking forward to a life of leisure. There are places to go, books to read, and movies to watch. So it’s a little unfair when he gets himself killed crossing the street.

Bob wakes up a century later to find that corpsicles have been declared to be without rights, and he is now the property of the state.”
