We lived in a small town in Texas- 1990? at the time with our middle son. The other two were away for college. Our tradition was to all be present to find and decorate the tree but with plane and school schedules we were finally all together on Christmas eve. Naturally it was dark, most tree vendors were shut down, stores closed.
Then we saw a big tent, lights on, outside of town; no one was there. We tried to find the vendor but he must have been gone for the night. This happened in the country, late, and we had my Hyundai hatchback vehicle, and five grown people. You get the picture–what were we thinking?
My sons picked a tree and we had no way to load it in or on the car–we did feel badly about taking a tree but didn’t want to take rope, etc. — perfectly logical, right? I digress😄.
It was decided my husband would drive and my oldest son and I would hold the tree on the side of the car with our windows rolled down and our arms holding the tree to take it home. It was a cold and slow ride home, but it worked. There was no one else on the road that night. The local constabulary must have also gone home for the night.
I must say it was one of the loveliest Christmases ever having all the kids home, a skullduggery adventure of sorts and our three cats had the best time of all the next morning, running through and diving in the wrappings.
Now a grandmother, my kids with their own adventures, I miss those fun times, the three cats and that home.

I could hardly believe these three puppies just cuddled and snoozed through kids walking into the pet shop, so had to take a photo.
They did have a puppy I would love, a Bernese Mountain Dog. He’s already three feet tall with huge paws. Cool!

No one thinks of giving a gift to Santa, well except for milk and cookies, and by the way, don’t you think he would appreciate a nice hot cup of coffee? Or hot chocolate? What’s with the cold glass of milk anyway? Have you ever thought he might be cold or lactose intolerant?
Now cookies are something else, but nowadays everyone seems to have a gluten allergy, so make sure you use almond flour or cashew flour if you make him cookies. If you’re thinking of using a sugar substitute, don’t. Just leave a banana or orange instead.
Think of how he must feel, working all year making toys and gifts, and then delivering them all over the world all night long on Christmas Eve. And have you thought about the time changes around the world? I wonder how he figures that out?
And the reindeer, don’t you think they’re tired too and deserve a treat on their journey? I guess there’s a lot to think about besides milk and cookies. Maybe a nice warm set of slippers or quilted flannel shirt for Santa? I’m sure he would appreciate receiving a gift once in a while too.
Think about it next time you’re putting out that stale cookie and warm milk.

Blue flames much too hot
A needed buffer between
My heart remains touched
Warm, though not harmfully burned
For everlasting passion
