“Project Hail Mary“

Andy Weir has a new book – “Project Hail Mary”, and I am loving it on audible. If you liked “The Martian”, you will probably like this new offering. It has the same humor and wit as TM.

I never thought I would like Audible as I tried it years ago while sequestered in a hospital room enduring radiation. I couldn’t have visitors and took my tape recorder – don’t laugh (it was 1995) and a taped version of my favorite book at the time, General Chuck Yeager’s autobiography. I had read the book and the spoken version was horrid.

It didn’t help I could not move out of the required positioning in bed and anytime a nurse came by they moved the tray cart out of my reach. You never know you can do something until you are put to the task.

MLMM Saturday Mix

***

Attending a heavy metal band concert, I decided to wear my hoodie so I would blend in. On the car trip to the venue, part of the road was lined with fans. I decided to get out of the cab and walk it to join the fun.

Icing on the cake

Is not always necessary if the cake is dense and moist, but I love frosting! This week I tried a boxed carrot cake in a mug and it had cream cheese frosting. I should have warmed the frosting packet in a cup of hot water because it plopped on top and was not spreadable. Did that stop me? Of course not!🙄😳. I am now over the flu and my appetite is back😭.

The Friday Reminder for #SoCS & #JusJoJan 2022 Daily Prompt – Jan. 22nd

Sorry Slipup

Joe was vigorously stirring the kiln. “Man this is going to be great! Slip over to that chair sweetie and look out for a miracle cure!”

Joe was keen on starting a new skin care business and his wife could use the help with her ruddy complexion. He thought kelp was the answer to thousands of people who had this reddish tint to their skin.

As he excitedly stirred his kelp and face lotion concoction he forgot to check the complete allergic reactions to the ingredients. After he applied his experiment to his wife, she ended up with huge welts on her body and difficulty in breathing. Joe’s idea led to a large emergency room bill and a disappointed, angry spouse.

Reblog of Fandango’s post:

I don’t see a reblog button on posts anymore so here’s the gist, from:

Last night, the United States Senate rejected a proposed rules change that would have allowed for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, to advance with a simple majority of 51 votes (as opposed to the arcane Senate filibuster rule, which requires a 60 vote “supermajority” to pass certain — but not all —pieces of legislation).

But two Democratic senators, Joe Manchin from West Virginia, and Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona, joined all 50 Senate Republicans in opposition of that rules change. It failed by a vote of 52-48.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, which, if passed, would have overhauled election laws and enabled Congress to counter an onslaught of new and extreme voting restrictions enacted by Republican-controlled state around the the country.

The key takeaway that every American who cares about their constitutionally guaranteed rights to vote in free and fair elections should remember is this.

Not one Republican senator in the United States Senate, and not one Republican representative in the United States House of Representatives voted in favor of ensuring and protecting the rights of every American citizen to vote in free and fair elections.

Not a single Republican member of the U.S. Congress! It makes me see red!

Thanks, Fandango, my thoughts exactly.

“Let’s go to Mexico” he said, “it’ll be fun” he said! Of course it has always beckoned me and living so close to the border I thought, why not?

We packed for a day trip and the brand new Explorer was gassed up, had snacks and water, because, well you know what they say—you never drink the water.

All the warnings about what you should drink and not, eat and not and how not to ask for directions in English. We planned it all, had our English Spanish dictionary handy and off we set.

The morning sun was brutal and after crossing into Mexico the desert was unforgiving. We were headed to a small town and about a hundred miles in when the engine overheated. Both of us were incredulous since this was a brand new SUV and we didn’t expect or prepare for any problems. We did think ahead enough to get a AAA membership but the cel service was not available in the area where we were stranded.

The engine finally cooled off draining our water supply and left us unprepared for a cold desert evening. No blankets or warm provisions needed, because we decided we’d be home that night.

Luckily a patrol car spotted us and the officers spoke English. We were towed back to the border and cel service restored but spent the night at a motel . If and when there’s another outing, we hope to be better prepared.
