Friday Writings – 13

***

A typical winter night in the forest, chilled to the bone, hearing a lonesome howl from a hopefully far away wolf. The partially hidden moon seemed to be a telltale sign that chaos may ensue before the sunrise.

“Possibly a storm sending more icy drops my way?” Sue shivered at her thoughts. “It was certainly not my idea to camp out in this dirt pile.” Sue loved camping in the heat of summer, but Joe was an all weather camper.

Sue could have held her tongue, but she always voiced her thoughts with no filter. Her words echoed in the valley when she spoke dislike of the area. “Why not set up nearer the trees? They would shelter us if the winds turn icy. I think we’d be safer there.” Joe ignored Sue’s question. Sue being sheltered was not his priority.

Sue moved closer to the campfire and wished she had stayed home this weekend but Joe insisted. For no rhyme or reason to her it seemed, he came home obviously upset and announced they were going camping. He practically slammed the equipment into the truck and drove on in silence. Sue knew better than to try to talk to him when he’s in that mood.

Finally seeming to settle down a bit, Joe joined Sue at the campfire. She felt relieved as he put his arm around her and apologized. “Sorry, I know I was rude. I lost my job today and the only thing I could think of was to get out here and breathe fresh air. I felt like they put me in a box and checked redundant to file away. I just needed to get away.”

Losin’ It😄

I was laying comfortably, supine

Remembered it’s bill day

I’ll pay them pronto with banking online.

After I donned my robe, snacked on some kippers

My eyebrows raised as a sight piqued my mind

Spied an $800 dollar expense that I find

Then felt a panic as if I’m a child, my heart started beating wild

I grabbed the curtain, almost shred the valance

Saw that I read it wrong, it was only the balance!

I hadn’t been drinking, barely awake

But a chunk of my mind did a wrong double take

I’m not a dipper or alcohol sipper but somewhere my mind took a definite slipper.

My family laughed as the joke to remind

It might be my time for Shady Pines🙄

3TC – He Had it Coming

***

Not everyone in the bar thought Joe was the star of the team. You would be hard pressed however, to find any doubters who voiced that opinion. Joe was huge, muscles bulging, loud, and arrogant.

After too many drinks and exploiting his smaller wiry teammate for a missed opportunity in the field, he was suddenly knocked ajar by the little guy. Turns out burly Joe had a glass jaw.

Fumbles

Started a poem about the word posh

Of course the handy rhyme was gosh

I thought it a simple pleasure to complete

Then WP glitch renounced my draft I see

It may be my fingers or maybe my skill

Trying to post some days makes me ill.

Simply Six Minutes

***

“What’s that dear? Oh I won’t forget, Charlie’s game starts at six, right? Yes, I’ll stop by for the team snacks, or I could make a snack here that’s more healthy, what do you think?” Jim had already left for his job—no answer received. He knew it would all be done, and done right. It always was, it was expected. “ Charlie! Time to get up! What would you like for breakfast sweetie?”

Sue put her hair up in a pony tail and washed her face, scrubbing herself awake. Look at those tired eyes she thought. Is that a wrinkle? Sue always judged herself in the morning, in a mirror with harsh light. She always wanted to look her best. It was expected.

She carefully applied makeup and combed her hair around her face. She dressed, checked her watch, knowing it was almost time for her volunteer job at the library. She wouldn’t want to be late, they always knew she would arrive on time, it was expected.

3TC – Artiste

Joe always lived vicariously through his oldest son Jack. He too, secretly wanted to be an artist and his son’s dream had been accomplished. None of his roommates in the university could doubt Jack had the talent, even though they were tired of finding black ink stains in their dorm room, all sizes of brushes left to soak in the sink, and sketches piled on the shelves. At home, Joe marveled at his son’s ability and was happy to enjoy it as an observer, if not the actual artist himself.
