Birthdays, who needs ‘em?

Mary sat in the nursing home, admiring the cake. She loved birthday cake. It was a special occasion, her hundredth one. She no longer enjoyed the celebration as in her younger days, with all the family around, singing and hugging her. Now it was almost a lament to her youth.

As she surveyed her surroundings, lonely oldsters, eyes glazed with their own memories, she decided to stir things up. She took out her hidden ciggie and lit it by the cake candles. Nurses came running but not before Mary took one long satisfying drag.

The Perfect Family

***

Looking into the worn photo album, Marie remembered good times. But seeing herself with her young family, she felt sad. They appeared ideal–hair groomed, clothes clean and everything a little too posed. Could this be what people thought seeing them from a distance or like this, in a picture?

Life is never like that, she thought. Our real life was never that perfect. The idea was difficult to swallow.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt 11-09-19

I see you teetering there

Your ambivalence I’m aware

You don’t think in black or white

Only trying to do what’s right?

Tipping this way might cause a stir

Going that way might infer

You actually care about the issue

Trouble ones who wish you’d

Make choices they would make

Can’t eat and still have the cake.

The Real You?

What is your favorite sweet treat?

I have to say it is Maple Walnut Fudge. I may have one piece a year if I’m lucky. My second is Rhubarb Pie. I have not had either for over a year. Both indulgences stem from my VT upbringing.

If you want to really relax, what is your goto?

This is funny for me because unlike most of you out there, I lead a relaxed life. Listening to music is good, but in general, having fun with my family or just the grandkids is my top answer.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

My guiltiest pleasure is a warm sweet creamy cup of coffee first thing in the morning.

My first thought was “ght” sounds like a suppressed sneeze. So here is my offering for the prompt:

Everyone loves babies and there are thousands of YouTube videos of babies doing anything and the invariable parents laughing, oohing or saying, “so cute” in each one. I love babies; if you do too, check out some of those sweeties!

Oh, and gesundheit!

Reenas Exploration Challenge #112

Reena provides a list of phrases. I chose the first one:

***

There are too many pockets of stillness”

I prefer surrounding sounds of family, children’s laughter, teenage pranks, whispered secrets followed by giggles, or the snore of tired elders.

This familiar music provides a wellness–togetherness that I have a need to hear, interrupting silence.

50 Word Thursday

The quiet

Green forests abound

Peaceful scene.

***

Flash flooding river caused anxiety in the forest creatures. Flight initiated, only to be halted at the river edge. Distressed at the sudden clash of noise upon the rocks, timid creatures cower in fright. Their peaceful watering hole is now a dangerous torrent.
