Fandango’s Story Starter

This week’s Story Starter teaser is: The biggest difference between a man and a cat is that a cat has nine lives. The main house cat, Feral, knew this as a fact because he had experienced many men as masters over the hundred and twelve years he was on earth. This latest man was a distraction as he often listened to loud opera music and Feral took to his secret refuge in the yard behind the house whenever the master was home. It wouldn’t be long before the old master would be deaf/dead or both and the household would once again be a peaceful place to sleep. Being 112, Feral, himself, gradually slept more and more. This didn’t worry him as he was only on his fifth cycle of lives.

Simply Six Minutes

“Let them flood the beach, I don’t care. I’m perfectly happy right here in my living room. I have the a/c on maximum output, and a boatload of DVDs to watch. I’m cool and comfy, here with my flamingo, Florence; she and I go way back. The beach is too crowded these days anyway.” Joe and Florence planned on ordering a pizza later—she loves pepperoni.

Dwarfed by water’s power
Sitting precariously
On slippery boulders
Smoothly carved by constant moving water
While feeling the humid air
Admiring the mountains
Distanced from her now
Lake Tahoe looms large
Blue waves ever seek the shore
Blue on blue on blue
So delightful.

You are no knight and that is not a four wheeled carriage, it’s a wagon! In my generation (her grandkids mumble “ancient”) we used to know how to obey a woman’s request! No such maverick as you, sir, would be giving orders! Men were humble and courteous.

It was the anniversary of Lady Dunbar’s wedding to Sir Chiles, and she had squeezed herself into her old wedding gown, not realizing the back was wide open to accommodate her inflated size. A wool charcoal wedding suit was laying on the bed. She looked around for anyone to wear it, as it had been packed up with the dress. Sir Chiles had been gone for twenty years, but Lady Dunbar insisted on celebrating each year, regardless.

You there! The Lady pointed to her grandson Charles—you can wear it, it is reusable of course, so let’s see it on. The reluctant young man did as he was bidden.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt

Thought of as a renegade, his being of poor family, and no means, answering to no one; he thought highly of himself regardless of actual circumstances. Unfortunately for village parents, each daughter of proper age seemed attracted to him. It was no surprise as he strode from country lanes with a confident although arrogant manner, and naive girls could only see his beauty—wavy black hair with a carefully placed curl on his forehead—flashing his blue eyes made girls swoon.

Sunday’s Six Sentence Story Word Prompt!

PROMPT WORD: GRID

The Sunday Whirl

Chilled teeth chattering absentmindedly as her tear dabbed face trapped in a tattered scarf, Mary squinted through cruel flecks of salty fluid that never seemed to cease. She didn’t want to see it, but necessarily came upon the grave just as a squirrel skittered across the sodden mound. The hem of her ragged woolen skirt seemed to drag along beside her, a witness to these events that caused her such sorrow. It seemed as if the dirt mound had been scalded of all the former flowery framed tributes, and now laid naked as if to say, I’m done, take me.

Wordle 614 – A Baker’s Dozen

Public Media

The U.S. House Labor, Healthb and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittees released its draft fiscal year 2024 appropriations legislation that proposed to zero out federal funding for public media.

The bill eliminates funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), public television and radio’s single largest source of funding, and Interconnection, public media’s distribution network that enables viewers and listeners to receive programs and emergency alerts.

Let us be clear: Without federal funding, there is no public media. Multiple studies confirm that ending funding would devastate, if not destroy, public media, resulting in the loss of programs and services or stations going off air.

Americans consistently rank federal funding for public media as one of the best investments the government makes. For about $1.40 per American annually, almost every community has access to programs and services that educate, inform, and inspire.
