Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction 4-26-18

Hey, did you hear about Charlie?

No, what happened?

Well you know he’s been working for Starkist all these years and they finally fired him.

What? They fired him? How come?

He lost his luster, his appeal as he aged, and the public lost their taste for poor Charlie.

Oh, yeah, remember one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish? They all got sold when Dr. Seuss passed in 1991, so sad. They were great guys, always up for a laugh.

Well, same thing happened to Charlie. Starkist corporation decided television audiences thought Charlie stunk and he got canned.

MLMM First Line Friday

His smile was like some kind of magic. I saw it clearly, even from across the baseball field. He was a catcher on the company team. I attended the game with my secretary and nurse friends from the area. The players were GIs from the Army Lab where some of us worked. It was strange really, I had never met him before, but something clicked.

Maybe it was magic. I was watching the game when between innings, the person wearing that smile walked across the field and stopped right in front of me, ME! I was shocked, probably turned red, as I had been watching him but was quite a ways from him. Sometimes now I think he was probably being a bit arrogant as he simply handed me his jacket and asked if I would hold it for him until the game was over. Hutzpah walking!

I don’t remember if I said anything. I do remember feeling something new to me, and hoping my blushing face would allow me to sink into the grass. Love at first sight is how I think of it now, possibly for him, too? After a few months of dating, he popped the question. We were married for 47 years until his death in 2013.

Three Line Tales 117

I don’t think it’s wrong, or dangerous. Why am I using my phone while driving? Because I can. Simple answer. It’s my car, my phone and I’ll do what I want, when I want.

I am an important person, better driver than you blokes, so get out of my way! I have meetings to attend, business to take care of, important things that can’t wait; don’t have time to pull over!

Glancing back at the road, seeing a streak of red he ignores, looks back to his phone. He probably didn’t feel the impact when he hit the fire truck.

Three Line Tales, Week 117

MLMM Tale Weaver 168

Waking up at four a.m. to the upstairs neighbors getting ready for work–I’m not complaining, they couldn’t be any quieter unless able to levitate themselves around their apartment. It’s still dark but I use the bathroom and go back to sleep until the garbage trucks arrive at six-thirty. Then getting up, washing, brushing teeth, and putting the kettle on. I live a pretty much routined life in the morning. My phone is silenced except for phone calls. This is necessary as I have my large family nearby.

Make a coffee drink, open the blinds, hope the sidewalks are cleared, letting light in to encourage my avocado pit plant starters. They’re pretty slow to show roots through their glass jar containers, but I never give up hope! Then I retreat to the bedroom, stretch my legs on the bed and read blogs, news, and write if I feel the urge. Blogging fills the mornings unless there is a planned activity with the family.

Mundane you think, I even think so at times, but there are rewards to living a quiet life. Not getting out as much as I like makes me more aware of the world around me when I do. Any natural surroundings hold more importance when they are not viewed every day. Clouds, blue skies, rain, snow, I enjoy them all. Wind? Not so much! Sounds, also, even in the urban atmosphere, where birds are rare, are enjoyable when heard.

We have an oil refinery close, and during the day it’s considered a necessary nuisance, but at night it’s all lights and the smoke makes interesting patterns in the sky. Sounds at night, train whistles, helicopters and planes are many because we have an airport, an Air Force Base and an Air National Guard Base. Night training sounds give a good, comforting feeling of protection.

I miss the mountains, trees, grassy meadows, and flowers of our home in Colorado, but there is an upside. It makes you appreciate when you travel a short ways and see it all again, with new eyes.

AtoZ Challenge W

WoW! What a Week!

Monday night was the Colorado Rockies baseball game in Denver attended by Jesse, his dad and brother. They sat behind home plate with Jackie Robinson’s daughter Sharon, meeting his favorite player, Charlie Blackmon, being interviewed by news reporters, and even though it rained some, the whole evening was an outstanding experience for Jesse and his family.

Sharon Robinson is an exceptional woman, warm, friendly and personable. The next day it was cold, windy and snowy here in Cheyenne when Ms. Robinson and the MLB reps, news reps and Rockies people arrived. Sharon met in Jesse’s classroom, gave out “Breaking Barriers” t-shirts, and signed books as she spoke to each student individually. Then an assembly was held where she, MLB rep, his teacher, principal and Jesse were up on stage and she talked about him and the importance of his family. Jesse read his speech and that’s when I started tearing up. We lived it, his struggles, but hearing him say it all in front of everyone, I know my heart just couldn’t get much bigger with pride. Every family should have this feeling. We are so extremely blessed.

“How ya doin’, Ethel? That’s a heavy load you’ve got there!” Edie glances back over her shoulder for a short break. Observing her companion struggling with the canisters, she sighs, and turns back to her own job.

Ethel and Edie are just two in the hundreds of new improved utility workers in the community. There are hundreds of women enduring the same fate. Artificial Intelligence has finally taken over, and humans are now outfitted for everyday tasks. Maintenance crews are made up of women no longer able to procreate.

These two refurbished ladies are just “living the dream” promised by corporate owners.

Under scrutiny Greg’s discovery of a brand new dinosaur turned out to be an ostrich (a rookie mistake in retrospect). Retreating to the bar amidst howls of laughter he witnessed Lovely Rachel snogging Smarmy Terry the top-soil expert. And then, to cap it all off, the nearby volcano they’d been excavating chose that exact moment to erupt.

All in all the palaeontology conference left a lot to be desired.

Watching the lava roar towards him Greg realised there was no chance of escape. He arranged the ostrich bones on the ground and lay down amongst them. The last laugh would be his.

A million years later a landslide unearthed a strange two-headed creature that was proudly proclaimed to be a brand new dinosaur….
