SYW 7-23-18

It is Monday, which doesn’t really matter to me since I don’t have a job any longer, but it does mean things are hopping in the family. We have some events coming up, so that will be fun. I would like to see the new Mission Impossible movie that opens this weekend, but I think other things will be the priority. Ceenphotography.com started the Share Your World feature on her blog and I hope you all participate to learn more about your fellow bloggers. Here’s a copy of her page:

My answers to this week’s questions:

1. I love almost every type of puzzle or quiz, except Sudoku.

2. Being with my kids and or grandkids, number one. Two, hot fudge sundae. Three, Chilis’ restaurant salsa and chips. Four, maple walnut anything. Five, holding, watching, playing with babies.

3. My favorites are huge dogs with lots of soft fur. I’m not into any sculptured varieties such as poodles. Newfoundlands, Great Pyrenees, wolf mixes my favorites.

I smiled this week having the companionship of my fifteen year old grandson, playing Scrabble, Wiki trivia, Trivial Pursuit-genus edition, Sorry, Kings in the Corner, Rummy, Crazy Eights, Hangman, and more. We were laughing up until one in the morning. I threatened teaching him Canasta if he repeated another Scrabble question, i.e., is IQ acceptable? Teen boys have significant memory, or is it hearing loss? It couldn’t be their attention span, surely.😂

Daily Addictions Prompt: Pointless

I’m not a techie

I really don’t care

What cords are which

Or what goes where

Recently I had nightly noise

From a receiver, a tech “toy”

Called and they said okay

We’ll send a new one straightaway!

It did come quickly, I admit

Opened to find the same old –it!

Refurbished, had a few scratches

So I called to see what the catch is

Meantime an email also arrived

A day after I surmised

I needed to get a replacement

It said, don’t throw it in the basement

Or sell, just recycle is what they meant

No problem but the new one didn’t work

The next phone guy was a jerk

Rude and sort of condescending

Grandsons hear his voice unending

“We can upgrade for a fee”

He said almost nastily

Replied I think this is a used one

“Would cost extra to get a new one”

Pointless not to accept my fate

The new bill I won’t pay

We set it up, worked for ten minutes

Now it’s off and I can’t use it.

It’s late I’m tired, not ready to deal

Or I’d tell the phone guy how I really feel.

😳😧😤

Putting My Feet in the Dirt 23

July heat is not inspiring

In fact it’s very tiring

Sweating in all activity

Makes you act with proclivity

Downing that ice cold beer

A reward for using garden gear

But then a mangy mutt appears

You grab a saucer, offer a drink

He looks at you, as his head sinks

He drinks and drinks and drinks

He then returns sort of a smile

Dripping water all the while

As it steams up from the walk

You reach out but then he balks

You offer your hand again

And you remember when

In past days you had a friend

Might this dog be here to mend

Thoughts of the other loyal’s end?

MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt 7-22-18

She decided to try it, at least one time. If I die, I die, she thought with a curious smile. Kiki wanted to sky dive. A dangerous event, but she loved the thought of it, hurling herself into the air, hopeful the chute would open and she would not end up in a splat on the field. She smiled again, what would they think then? Would I be heralded as a brave young woman, a stupidly dangerous girl, or possibly suicide by parachute, never releasing the clasp to loosen the life saving device?

She had planned this for a while. Her name had always been a moniker for unusual behavior, stretching the limits in one way or another. Now at 25, she was going for the ultimate, in her mind, challenge. She sought a company that would let her do it on her own with no companion on the descent to back her up if needed. Finding a careless flight company was exactly how she planned the outing.

After a twenty minute tutorial in what to do when, she scrambled into the small plane, along with the pilot and one crewman. As the plane climbed she felt a rewarding satisfaction in that she was totally in control and what happened next was up to her only. As in many ventures, she loved the aspect of danger, on the edge of panic but still in control.

It was the moment she had looked forward to, the door opened, it was time. The pilot gave a thumbs up and the other crew member adjusted and checked one last time. She stepped out and let herself fly. Such a free feeling, she was surprised at how wonderful it felt. There was no lurching in her stomach, she was falling fast but it felt like floating.

The altimeter on her wrist started beeping, she was fastly approaching the red warning to pull the cord. She gazed at it, unwilling to adhere to its warning. She fingered the clasp, hesitant to pull it down, the floating felt pleasing, possibly the best feeling she had ever experienced. The light flashed a brighter red as if telling her, can’t you see me? I’m brighter, more insistent, pull the cord!

She surveyed the approaching ground, even seeing the intended landing spot. Should I, or not? She spent a few seconds thinking of what their lives would be without her, could she do that to them? Could she commit to this final act of selfishness? Tears smashed into the safety goggles as she pulled the cord. Now her stomach rolled as she was jerked up swiftly when the chute pulled her up from the ground.

MLMM Saturday Mix 7-21-18

Citizens unite

Join the fight

Not into the night

Show yourselves in the light

Be positive

No rules broken

And be active

Leave cruel words unspoken

For there’s no advantage

In being harmful

Spread good thoughts and hope by the armful

A needed approach for the hopeless waiting

We all need the good, to stop the hating

Some callous comments yes, are grating

Promote the kind, keep the others abating.

Movie Monday

I think this movie is relevant today:

State of Play

Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is a rising star in Washington; handsome, unflappable and seemingly honorable, he’s seen as his party’s next presidential nominee. Until, however, his research assistant/mistress is found murdered and damaging secrets come pouring out. Journalist Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), Collins’ old friend, must investigate the murder, and walks headlong into a massive cover-up involving some of the nation’s most promising political and corporate figures.
Director: Kevin Macdonald

Wordoftheday: Striving

You wonder sometimes if it’s worth it

Too sad this day to mirth it

Whenever there is constant pain

Surviving it is the needed main

You have to make it, not just surviving

Not just to exist, but to be thriving

“Don’t let the bastards keep you down!”

He said, turning a smile from my frown

Support in whatever form you need

A friend’s advice is good indeed.

Word of the Day Challenge: Esthete

Visiting the Denver Museum of Art is always a pleasure. The last time was to see the Edgar Degas exhibit which featured of course, his signature paintings of the ballet. My favorites were the sketches of horses. He sketched men and women also, muscles outlined, and it was fascinating to see them, even more than the completed works. My favorite sculpture:

A sketch:

Degas was a true esthete.

Edgar Degas was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Wikipedia

Sunday Photo Fiction 7-22-18 and Putting My Feet in the Dirt 22

Pouty Penelope was working those legs as fast and as strongly as she could, all the while muttering how much she despised spending her Sunday afternoon on this horrible hot venture.

It was a bet she lost with her brother she now regretted fully. She should have known he would win, he always won, but for some inexplicable reason, she succumbed to the challenge once again. It was probably karma, she reasoned, after the way I treated him when he was little. The idea of a baby brother to care for at age ten was reason enough she thought. I had to care for him while other girls my age ran outside with their friends.

All these thoughts running through Penelope’s mind disguising the truth of her undying adoration of her little brother. As she saw him tiring, she pushed herself enough to keep beside him, glancing at him with a new smile.
