Feeling nostalgic

I woke up to snowplows and window scrapers at five and my curiosity drove me out of bed to see what all the fuss was about. Hardly anything! A few more inches of snow fell, but nothing like what it sounded like.

Snow, when I was a child in Vermont, drifted up to the second floor of our farmhouse and we had great fun jumping off the porch roof into it. We also tunneled, built forts, and enjoyed snow in whatever way we could. Sledding or skiing – not the way you think of it, but a pair of old six foot narrow pieces of wood (probably an ancient pair of cross country types) with a leather strap in the middle to tie your boots on. Of course we hardly ever made it to the bottom of the hill but that was expected. We also retrieved the new snow for a unique treat, “sugar on snow” – boiled maple syrup drizzled on a bowl of snow. Those were the days–really–of uninhibited fun and adventure.

In Colorado we skied, usually on off days, until it got too expensive, and drove to a place to sometimes participate but mostly watch grandkids sledding. I often wish my kids and grandkids could have experienced the fun and freedom I had.

One Liner Wednesday 3-6-19

It’s not if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.

Or something like that. There are many versions. Regardless of who originated the idea, it is a principle I’ve always used. Enjoy, have fun and no cheating. Whether it’s a game or sport or life in general.

Haunted Wordsmith Genre Challenge 2

Stop right there, Sky! I have to reload my phaser before we go in there.

That’s okay Nelson, those Canadian Mounties are no match for us, even here!

Yeah, without their horses, they’re dead meat!

But they have King, and he’s immune to our robotic dogs.

Well he’s just one and we have many, I think we’ll be okay.

(The two space jockeys loaded up and motioned the dogs to go ahead. As soon as they immersed into the screen, yelps from the robot dogs were surrounding them. One by one they fell at Sky’s inflated space boots. Nelson forged ahead, determined, but was blinded by a star’s reflection off the red Canadian uniforms. The two men were defeated.)

We underestimated them. Let’s reboot and try again.

Story Starter Challenge 3

The three girls stood over the victim. Only one didn’t have a smile. She and the girl laying on the gym floor had been best friends in eighth grade. Now a year later, she hardly recognized her.

The team manager came running over.“Heavens to betsy, why’d you do that?”

“She deserved it! She’s been shoving, pushing, and elbowing us all week. We finally decided to fight back. She may be the top scorer, but she is mean!”

The girl on the floor stood up dizzily. The coach helped her to the side. This event finally made him take better control of his young athletes.

MLMM Photo Challenge #253

My parents always tell me

Be whatever you want to be

Different choices outlined

On my wallpaper I see

I read a lot of books

My imagination soars

I love all the different looks

My mind is never bored

I think I’ll try a lot of things

To see what I might like

Loving the world as it comes

A scavenger hunt of life.

FFF #3

He missed her every day. Such a sad predicament, her leaving his life so quickly. His dad said she was up there, in the clouds, always watching over him. How could that be, he wondered? Was she alive up there? Why wouldn’t she stay here on earth with him?

This day he ran to the shoreline and demanded in his loudest voice, “Where are you mother? Why didn’t you stay with me? Are you up there? Where are you?” Suddenly a figure appeared in the clouds, only visible to the young boy. It only appeared for a moment, but the feeling of love he received will stay with him forever.

Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge #3

Story Starter #2 +

Julie wanted to be thin. All of her life she dreamed of fitting her plumpish body into a size two. She constantly wished to be like the actresses on the television shows, now wearing more revealing outfits than ever before. “Those long perfectly formed legs, do they ever eat? Is black leather so form fitting ever going to be in my future?” Julie had these thoughts every day. Basically a healthy person, her DNA was never going to cooperate for Julie to be model of the year.

It was consuming her mind, her energy, just to get herself to work every day. Her coworkers noticed she was becoming increasingly despondent. Julie’s friend Margo, was one of those willowy women Julie so longed to be. Margo was a good friend but realized Julie had problems. She decided to make a suggestion, hoping Julie would not be upset. “I’m going to the gym again tonight, would you like to join me? It’s a fun Zumba class and I know you love music. It’ll be fun!”

Julie decided to take a chance. Maybe this would be the answer. She had tried exercise before, but it was monotonous and boring. She went home, put on her most stylish sweatsuit and met Margo at the gym. As she walked in, she noticed the women all looked like clones of Margo. They were all dressed in bright spandex, bouncy hair and even makeup. Julie just stopped and said “Thank you, but I don’t think I can do that.”
