FFF Challenge #11

“Zanzibar? Really my dear? It’s been so long since we’ve left the continent, surely you jest!”

“Oh, Randolph, don’t be a stick in the mud! You can see this sight before us, can you not?” Marguerite was referring to the bleak landscape surrounding their ancestral home. “Quite depressing don’t you think, my dear? Oh, do say we can go! Please, Randy? Pretty please?”Marguerite offered her most coquettish smile while looking up from her long lashes into Randolph’s eyes.

Randolph could never resist that look, as he reassured the love of his life with a passionate kiss. Later, in the twilight atmosphere, Marguerite rewarded Randolph with his favorite dessert, strawberries and cream, served au naturel. “Oh, Marguerite, my favorite” he moaned, as she applied the treat.

A to Z Challenge – Z

Suffering’ succotash, it’s the last day of the infamous A to Z Challenge and what can we do with Z?

I think on this snowy, cold (yes I know it’s almost May) day I will turn my thoughts to Zanzibar. It looks very inviting today!

A to Z Challenge – Y – Redo

Since I’m gone a lot today, using my phone–glitches! The video I wanted, not going to happen, so I apologize.

As to the letter Y, I ask you, whY there seems to be no more movies made like this–an oldie you might remember–Blues Brothers. I couldn’t find the right video, so here’s one of my favorite scenes:

Putting My Feet in the Dirt #28

Donning her denim overalls for a day outside in the garden, Mary was excited to see what Mother Nature did with the seedlings she planted last week. Working in the city, these weekend trips back to the bucolic setting of her youth were heavenly.

Last week she planted some of her favorite vegetable seedlings, grown from seeds indoors the past few weeks. Mary’s hope was that a sturdy start would help them survive during her five day absence.

To Mary’s surprise, they all seemed to be doing well until she came upon one odd sight, the eggplant sprouts. They were larger than any of the other vegetables and quite peculiar in appearance. She decided the seeds must have been particularly healthy and went on gardening.

The next weekend Mary returned to find many plants had taken hold well and she was very happy until she spotted large purple blobs taking over the corn plants. The eggplants were almost frighteningly large. The vine seemed to be strangling the corn stalks. Corn plants were covered with them and their tops were looking dry, even malnourished. Mary was shocked at these uneasy eggplant episodes and started to pull their vines away from the corn stalks.

Sadly to report, Mary’s body was found by investigating police when she had not shown up for her job in the city. “A bizarre sight” the forensics team observed as Mary seemed to have been strangled and partially consumed by vines emanating from the oversized eggplants. The coroners had never experienced a vanquish by vicious veggies before.

Food Cravings/Disasters

I was craving cookies, they are a lot of work when you’re stuck sitting, and I can’t leave them alone. Fam is gone this weekend, so decided against cookies but I thought. . .apple crisp?

I took out a box of graham cracker crumbs, had expired in 2017 so trashed it. ; ) Then I thought I’ll just make a regular crust. In the meantime I knew I had a can of apple filling but forgot I can’t open cans.

My canopener bit the dust yesterday opening a can of spinach, an adventure in itself. The spinach was in a poptop can and of course it broke off. Can opener wouldn’t work, maybe the edge was too high. I tried an old beer can opener, no luck, still the lid too deep. Corkscrew attempt failed, so I finally stabbed it with a butter knife, causing a mess, but by that time I was determined…and it was a can of apple filling-need I go on? I can hear you groaning, please don’t!

It may seem I use a lot of canned items, but it’s the end of the month and fresh ingredients don’t last in once a month shopping trips.

I could have made popcorn but was not in the mood. I bought a jar of marshmallow fluff at Christmas time just in case the kids were over and wanted to make fudge. No expiration date…think it’s like twinkies, probably never goes bad–creepy! I always have chocolate chips in freezer for kids when they stop by. But I was too lazy to make fudge. I have a microwave fudge recipe that is the kids’ favorite but I prefer the old harder kind.

Cereal sounded okay but no milk. Bag of salad available, but I was cold and it didn’t sound good. I have frozen chimichangas but no salsa. I decided on a warm bagel with cream cheese spread. Tomorrow it’s baked chicken breast and a potato – boring!

Word of the Day: Lackluster

It’s been said, often by me, that life these days lacks luster, but then I’m reminded how I’m mistaken. A small girl dons her first tutu and I think, it can’t get any better than this. As years go by I see her amazement peering through a telescope for the first time. And then last week, sitting outside a changing room to see this beautiful butterfly emerge in her first formal gown. Definite luster.
