Response to Daily Prompt: Second thoughts

Turning on the radio, an old song was playing. My grandson who plays the drums would probably like this, on second thought…..maybe not. We send each other YouTube videos of old and young drummers. He is currently in the high school marching band, in the pit, as they call it.

My nephew teaches drums and is in a band in New England. He started when John Bonham was most popular. I love the drums, and do not need any accompanying music to enjoy them. Being totally uncoordinated, I am fascinated by the dexterity and concentration it takes to play them. The album below and a couple other drum records I used to play when I needed inspiration to do any kind of work, especially house cleaning.

On a side note, whenever my kids came home from school and I had Neil Diamond singing “Traveling Salvation Show”, they would groan. When they first heard the (pick up the babies, grab the old ladies) part, they thought it was funny, being able to sing along. Later, not so funny because it became the “cleaning” song. Music is motivating, whether it is in a romantic, nostalgic, melancholy, rousing, inspirational, or relaxed setting. From Gershwin to John Phillip Sousa, to Sam Smith, all completely different, but I enjoy them all.

I really like most drum music. The latest movie I watched involving drums was “Whiplash”, starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. I liked the movie, but JKS’s character was so intimidating, some parts were hard to watch. The movie gives some insight on what it takes to compete with success. The drum scenes, especially the final one, are spectacular.

Response to Share Your World Challenge

1. My outlook on life is very simple, try to do the best you can with what you’ve got.

2. The best vacation I ever had was in Hawaii. Eleven days on Maui, private beach.

3. I have a lot of favorite candies. Maple walnut fudge is on the top of the list. Growing up in VT we gathered our own maple sap, made syrup, and all the treats that entails.  Sugar on snow also a favorite, served with sour pickles, and plain raised doughnuts.

4.  Lots of things make me smile. The looks on a child’s face, babies laughing, watching my family doing anything, are just a few.

5. I am grateful for the blog friends I have met here, looking forward to meeting more.

Response to the Daily Prompt: Irksome

I had to laugh when I read this. Irksome is definitely in my vocabulary! Admitting I’m an impatient sort, I find trying to edit photos on the blog posts frustrating. Did I ask anyone? Of course not! I’m an independent old woman and I hate asking anyone for help on anything, even an anonymous WordPress instruction site. After multiple times of trying to size my picture of Nosferatu for the Daily Prompt “relish”, I gave up and put the iPad down. Of course it couldn’t have been my fault, it was WP, or the iPad, or the photo itself. After about five minutes (impatience rules), I consulted the help section. A couple of attempts at finding the right answer, and by George, I think I’ve got it. Unlike Josh in the movie “Big”, I got it.

Daily Prompt:  Relish

After the usual hot dog reference which I love with mustard and relish, I always think of a villain. Possibly a vampire with bowed head and crooked arms, is rubbing his hands together. He has the look of anticipation and even glee as he watches his prey. She is sleeping, unaware of the ghostly intruder. Her gown is seductively lowered from her soft, pale neck. He is almost overcome with temptation. He can wait no longer, approaches with gnarled, long fingernails grabbing her shoulders. She wakes slightly and a look of horror comes to her face. Her silent scream comes too late as he sinks his fangs into the innocent flesh. He drinks and relishes his conquest.

Hyperbole

I have always spoken like this. Even with my grandkids (one thirteen year old always calls me on it, the stinker!) I say “millions” frequently. “Dozens, hundreds, etc” always when I’m explaining something. “I’ve already said NO a zillion times!” Probably just frustrated mom talk, but I was guilty of it. I suppose most moms and dads feel like they’ve said it at least that many times, but it’s just hyperbole. I can remember being told “I’ll knock you into next week”.  Probably a good thing I don’t remember what I did then…..?

Minnie the Moocher

“Let me tell you the story of Minnie the moocher, she was a low down hoochie coocher”. So goes my favorite song by Cab Calloway, in the“Blues Brothers” movie. Mr. Calloway was one of a few cameo appearances, including John Candy, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles. This is one of my all time favorite movies, starring Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi. It has great music, comedy, and unparalleled rapport between Dan and John. There are many memorable scenes, one of my favorites is when the nun who taught them gave the boys their “mission from God”. Another is when their blues band performs in a bar where they have “both kinds of music, country and western”. Most of the funniest scenes are on YouTube if you’re interested. If you like comedy, music and blues, you must see it!

Live and Learn

Sorry, but it’s about time

To try to write a new rhyme

Hiding under my quilt

I’m feeling some guilt

To try and forget

This person I met.

I just want to snooze

Cause I suffered a ruse

Didn’t think I would lose

But I was refused

You can see I’m confused

And yes I feel used

But it was an adventure

I don’t need a lecture

I just need to learn

You need to be earned

To give myself free

Makes a fool out of me.
