Daily Prompt:  Discover

The helicopter hovered

For tourists to discover

Two lovers on the roof

Certainly not aloof

 Lifted their blanket in salute

Cameras clicked, what a shoot!

The pilot laughed and took their loot

The lovers smiled, joined in cahoots.

So if you fly a skyline tour

Be prepared to see amour.

Picture Prompt-19

“This is the perfect bow for his present, and it’s done.  All the decorations are set and our stockings are hung just like they were on our first Christmas”.  She was overwhelmed with the thought of him coming home.  Worried for months if he was safe.  He always seemed okay on their video chats, but those hadn’t happened in weeks.

She stood up and surveyed the room.  Tree, wreath, stockings, lights, all just as it was the first time.  Everyone thought they were foolish to marry on Christmas Eve, but they couldn’t wait.  He was deployed to Afghanistan five days later. The time they had as husband and wife was too brief, but she wouldn’t change anything.  The commitment made by them both was solid.

She had heard he was coming home after being released from the hospital in Germany.  She couldn’t meet him there and their communication was sketchy the last few days.  When she received the call he would be transported home just before Christmas, she murmured a silent prayer of thanks.  Grateful he was alive, and coming home.

The months without him seemed like years had passed. And then not knowing how seriously he had been hurt….yes, I am grateful, so grateful he is all right.  It will take some practice, some adjustment, but he is strong, he’ll make it.  She finished the last bit of wrapping and checked once again to make sure everything was perfect for his homecoming.  It will be difficult, but we’ll survive.

As she was about to leave the room, there was a knock on the door.  She opened it to see a Marine officer in the doorway.  “Ma’am, I’m Lieutenant James, and I believe you know this guy”.  He stepped aside to help her husband enter the room. She took a deep breath as she quickly scanned her husband’s face.  His expression was a hesitant one.  Upon seeing her warm, loving reaction, tears came to both their eyes.  She walked over and hugged him as tight as she could.  The Lieutenant grabbed her husband’s crutches and stepped aside.  She didn’t care his leg was missing.  She didn’t notice the scars on his neck and cheeks.  All she knew at that moment was that he was home, and how much she loved him.

Prompt-346-150 words or less

“I want real cloth ribbon this year”, I told them. They were hardly listening, spying every new toy on the edge of the aisle so you couldn’t miss them.

“But mom, don’t you think I’d look nice in this?” Spoken as a (twenty year) four year old who’s too indoctrinated already.

“That’s way too old for you”, six year old sister advises.

I steered the girls to the food court, I just needed to rest.

When we entered we saw Santa Claus slumped over a table, sleeping. “Santa!” screamed the four year old. “Are you sleeping, Santa?”

The man looked up quickly. “Oh, my dear…..yes, I am. So tired, I’ve been delivering toys”.

He reached in the large bag beside him and pulled out two gifts for the girls.

“See?” the little one said to her big sister, ” I told you he was real!”

“Ok, just hold it steady. All the nice, thank you for your business, rewards, etc didn’t work, so here’s my idea. Well scare the crap out of them by threatening to send this scary gnome to their house! Like it?”

“Well, sir, it’s an innovative idea. Think it’ll work?”

Daily Prompt:  Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm means one thing to me, my friend C. She is one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. I heard about her through my daughter and grandchildren. She tutored them in math, and taught the girls how to knit, crochet and quilt; all the while teaching them valuable life lessons.

C. is an extraordinary woman. She was a nun in her youth, eventually marrying and becoming a lawyer. I officially met her at my granddaughter’s graduation party. I had barely seen her when dropping off or picking up the kids. I feel sorry about that now because when we finally connected, the time was short. The family was moving away along with me. We met for lunches and talks when we could, before I left.

I had the privilege of accompanying this avid volunteer to a nursing home where she played the accordion and sang to the residents. We had great fun. There is nothing insincere about this woman. She gives her whole heart to everyone, and the people she helps with her funny, jolly attitude. She is certainly an individual, in the nicest sense.

Now about eight hours away from her, I realize how privileged I was to meet C.

Visual Prompt-1945

As the old woman sewed her wares, memories of her childhood drifted in and out of her mind.

The days of running free with my brothers on the plains of this state, Arizona.  I am glad to still be living here in this warm place, but sitting here can take a toll on my body.  To think I used to run faster than my brother, and ride very well, too.  I have to admit he was better with the bow.  My arms were not as strong as his to be accurate with the arrow.  We loved to swim in the river near our camp.

Those days of the Apache are now gone, along with my family.  My only family is my dog.  He keeps me company as I sit and sew.  Occasionally I am asked for my picture.  It doesn’t bother me.  Our heritage dwindles.  Maybe a picture of me would live on to pique a mind into learning our culture.  There are only bits here, while we sell our wares.  These bits of history may live on a while.  The rugs so popular when I was young, are still wanted today.  I can’t make those, I have to be satisfied with the trinkets I can make here at this market.  People just want a souvenir made by a “real American Indian”.  They don’t want to hear the history behind it, or how it’s made.  They don’t want to know about our trials in life.  They only want to make a quick purchase.  That is alright with me.  I am happy to sit and sew with my memories.

Picture Prompt-17

This Santa has a lot on his mind. He looks lovingly at the child on his lap. He could barely hear her soft voice as she told him her Christmas wish.

“Santa, I don’t think my wish will fit in your sleigh. I only want one thing. My wish is for a home, for me and my mom and dad.”

60 Minutes till the Coffee Grinds

Sixty minutes to hear the coffee grind

Sleep evades with him on my mind

Should not worry, his world is upset

I shouldn’t worry, but yet

The voice in my head won’t ever stop

To let me sleep and think not

Of how he’s faring, how he feels

Turns over and over as a reel

Then sneaks in the unthinkable thought

Is it a oneway ticket I bought

A oneway trip to be finished alone

Not to return to the one I’ve known

That these are impossible dreams?

Sometimes that’s the way it seems

Still waiting at life’s shore

Hoping there will be more.
