The Green (Picture Prompt-22)

She leaned over the deck rail, could see nothing but blues.  Sea blue, sky blue, the hues reminded her of a favorite tune, “Away, beyond the blue”.  This is what she wanted, to be away, beyond everything she knew.  This would be the route to a new life, a new adventure.  The steamship would arrive in a few days to her new destination, New Zealand.

She had always wanted to see that country, walk the uninhabited green valleys, and be free from the city she grew up in.  The exhaust fumes, the sewers, the endless stacks of garbage bags, all of that was now a distant memory.  She was looking forward to fresh air and green, lots of green.  No more gray cement and black pavement, metal and steel, just green.

The travel agent tried to persuade her to stay at a fancy resort, but she chose a small village’s boarding house instead.  But she wouldn’t even be there for long.  She invested in the best camping and hiking equipment she could afford.  She wanted the experience of having the freedom of the open landscape.

As she gazed over the blue sea, she could only think, “two more days till I  realize my dream.”

Prompt-347, 150 words

The doctor and nurse made no attempt at making Rose feel comfortable. After all they thought, she’s in her forties, she should know better. The older woman looked dismayed, but had a steady hand on her daughter.

Rose felt faint as the medicine entered her vein. Their attitude was unwarranted, this was a doctor’s office, not a courtroom.

The mother comforted her daughter. She felt her pain, knowing she might regret this later. The doctor acted quickly; the removed contents set aside in a small, black bowl. “She can stay here till she wakes.” He turned and left while the nurse covered the bowl and also left the room.

Rose awoke, and asked her mother, “Is it over?”

Her mother replied, “the doctor is done.”

Gathering their belongings, they walked slowly to the exit. They both felt they’d left something behind.

Visual Prompt:1951

She didn’t know what to do with that old boat.  It was just sitting there like a piece of junk.  She had asked Pete to move it to the trash bin a few times, but as usual, his fishing pole called to him instead.  After a few days she noticed some grass growing inside the boat, and she thought,  “if I could make something pretty out of the old clunker…..and it didn’t seem as if Pete would ever get to it.”

That same day she went into the woods across the bay, carrying a small shovel and a trash bag.  She walked around and gathered a few natural plants she thought would survive in the old boat.  In a swampy area she found some lilies and sweet flag, ornamental cabbage, and others she thought might survive.

When she returned with her treasures, Pete came over and kneeled down beside her at the boat.  “Lucky I didn’t throw this old heap away, right, Edna?”  She looked at him with a fake scowl and he winked back.

Picture Prompt-21

The air was still. The lake ceased to ripple. The animals and birds were quiet. The only visible evidence of life was the soot on the chimney, indicating someone had lived there, once upon a time. The scene was almost ethereal, as if perhaps suddenly fairies would appear, and elves would bounce out from behind the trees. The fairytale vista I observed for a time, as if in a dream. Then, in a matter of minutes, the vision changed, the sunlight brightened, and my dream turned to reality. The remainder of the hiking party joined me, and all was normal.

Visual Prompt:1952

Charlie was a hard worker. Everyone knew he gave the best shoeshine in the neighborhood. His regulars, the businessmen, would stop by every morning to receive his spit shine technique to make them look their best.

This job was backbreaking, and his knees suffered, but he was proud to do it. His mom needed him to help with the money, and the regular customers knew his situation. They always put a little extra in his cup. Charlie appreciated this and worked diligently to do the best job for them. There were other shoe shine boys down the street, but he wanted his customers to always return to him.

He was having a good day, very busy, but his back was aching and his hands tired and sore.  His cup was full.  His mom would be grateful to have the money.  But most of all he felt pride in himself.

Visual Prompt-2

As she watched him driving down the lane, a song started in her mind. “Someday he’ll come along, the man I love…”. It had always been her favorite song, but also a very real dream of hers. To have that man, that love, just for her.

She watched until his car was completely out of sight. Could he be the one who would fulfill that dream? She smiled as she leaned against the porch’s edge. “And he’ll be big and strong, the man I love”….oh, she thought, he can, he will.
