Ruminating

My dad used to use this word, ruminate. His interpretation of words were sometimes different than the norm. He was thirty-eight when I was born, my mom forty. My experiences as the baby of the family were very different from my three older sisters. And like every youngest child, I heard the, “you’re spoiled because you’re the baby” criticism. I prefer to think I had the advantage of seeing their mistakes and not repeating them. No one likes to be punished and I tried to avoid it at all cost. I wouldn’t say fear, exactly, but there was a belt used for sharpening razors hanging up for all to see as a warning. It was the last result I guess. If my mom was really angry, she would send us out to the yard to get a switch.

Parents were busy then, had a lot on their minds. Some things took a lot more time and effort than they do now. My dad worked our dairy farm in the early morning and evening. He was a machinist during the day. I don’t remember him ever just sitting down when I was little, unless playing the banjo or fiddle.

Times were certainly different then. Dinner or family time did not involve answering the phone or being transfixed at the laptop, or tablet.  Of course they weren’t available to us, but….  If anyone talked, it was dad. This behavior continued after we sold the farm and moved into a house in town. Still working the machinist job and no farming, dinner the same, and then records were played, and rare tv watching. But even if all this was not the “Father Knows Best” or “Ozzie and Harriet” you’ve heard about, it was a good life and I’m glad of it.  And it’s not over, I just like to ruminate.

Blast From The Past – Women, Their Bodies, Wrinkles and Scars…

This is a great post, so I have to share it! From amommasview.wordpress.com

amommasview's avatarA Momma's View

Nothing throws me off more than listening to two gorgeous young women talking about body issues. Listening to them talk about the faults in their bodies, the ugly bits and pieces and what they would love to have changed. It makes me sad.

Today I overheard two young women talk about all the things they thought were wrong. And funny enough for some reason the post I’m about to share as Blast Of The Past had a bit of traffic suddenly again today too. Coincidence? Maybe… but maybe also a reminder for all of us to not judge ourselves too harshly…

The Secret Keeper-#79

“Oh, my dear, those white roses are beautiful. I’m so glad that Fanny chose white roses for her wedding bouquet. I think it’s quite elegant, don’t you dear?” Aunt Mamie softly touched the petals and took a big sniff. Her husband Mike was not so impressed.

“A flower’s a flower as far as I’m concerned. You women handle those delicate decisions. I just dig, plant, and weed.” He put more of the special fertilizer around the white rose bush to encourage more blooms. He wanted to make sure there were plenty when the time came.

Mamie came out from the kitchen with two large glasses of iced tea for her and her husband.  “I really appreciate all the work you put in to make a lovely garden, Mike. You are sort of a sweetie to me, you know.” Mamie and Mike had been together for forty years, married for thirty-five. Right from the beginning he knew he loved her, but their romance was interrupted by the Vietnam war. He was lucky not to be permanently injured. Truth be told, he loved doing the gardening to make his wife happy. He groaned a bit as he stood, and slowly walked over to join Mamie for tea.

“I’m glad Fanny is finally getting married. I was beginning to wonder,” Mamie commented. “That first fella, Jim, was not the one for her. I’m glad she found out he was no good before they set the date.”

“They were both too young, and not really suited, that’s all. Not like you and me, Mamie, we are equal partners!”

Mamie had to protest a bit. “Well you know what Joanne said….” Mamie and her sisters loved to gossip. When they found out Jim pulled a ruse on Fanny, they immediately despised him. The neighborhood grapevine reported to Mamie’s sister that Jim was seen down in the local bar. He was caught romancing a waitress and ended up getting thrown out.  Of course he denied the whole thing. A lot of nonsense happened during those times. Some soldiers coming home looking for drugs, gangs starting up, and violent crime was rising. In the seventies a lot of unrest was the norm and most “nice folks” didn’t venture into that part of town.

“Don’t get yourself all worked up. Gossip is just that, gossip. It doesn’t do anyone any good.” He got up and went over to the rose bush and clipped one of the prettiest blossoms for her. Mamie loved the gesture and Mike knew it was just the trick to calm her down.

Jan Hagel

Speculaas

Everyone has that house in the neighborhood where all the kids congregate. Ours was no exception. The best cook for kids specialties lived next door. She and her husband were like grandparents for our kids. They were from Holland and immigrated to the east coast of the US with their parents. Amy was an exceptional cook and taught me how to make raviolis, meatballs, tomato sauce, and delicious desserts.

Every Christmas she would bake delicious round butter cookies, Jan Hagel, and the Dutch ginger windmill shaped cookies, Speculaas. She had special wooden molds to shape the windmills. She also taught me to make all of these cookies. The kids still talk about them today. She was also a very strict and disciplined housekeeper. If it was Monday, it was wash day, Tuesday, ironing, and so on. If you asked her over for a cup of tea, it had to be around these scheduled events, no exceptions.

Christmas had the kids looking forward to her cookie treats, but Easter was like magic. While still believing in the Easter bunny bringing surprises in a basket that you could wake up to, they always wondered where the mysterious huge chocolate filled eggs came from. Of course Amy and her husband bought them every year as a secret.

These loving parents had two sons that weren’t married, so our kids got the benefit of the situation. Their “real” grandparents lived far away, so it worked out well for the whole family.

Daily Prompt:  Swarm

When my son called and asked if he could come down to stay with us, he brought a girl with him, soon to be my daughter in law. After a long time planning, an engagement and wedding date was set. We went all over Houston looking for a wedding dress. There was a special sale at this one place. We went inside to be swept up into a swarm of would be brides, grabbing absolutely anything. They were madly dropping their clothes anywhere and pulling on the bridal gowns. The prices were fantastic, and the huge beehive bevy was sometimes violent if two women eyed the same creation. Thankfully we left before we were stung!

Tell me Something Good- 03/06/2017

“Dobby was a surprise to zoo officials — and not simply because, at 23 years old, Kipele is the oldest of the zoo’s giraffes. In fact, mother Kipele was using birth control at the time of her impregnation, and resisted initial attempts for veterinarians to perform ultrasounds.”

“Dobby is the first giraffe born at the Denver Zoo since October 2010, and is the offspring of Kipele and father Dikembe. Kipele was born at Denver Zoo in August 1993, while Dikembe was born at Colorado Springs’ Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in December 1993 and came to Denver in February 1996. Along with adult females Masika and Heshimu, Dobby brings the zoo’s giraffe herd to five, officials said.”

Is this the cutest face or what!😍

Word Prompt-Reflection

He tried to sneak by without detection

Forgot the window showed his reflection

Was spying on his girl’s new beau

Ended up moving way too slow

The girl and the beau saw him sneaking

The poor guy’s eyes were leaking

So sad to see she had a new love

The beau, irate, took out his glove.

A duel, the beau declared, I challenge you

He tried to run, but lost his shoe

The duel it seemed, never occurred

Alas, his girl was no longer allured.

Daily Prompt:  Vivid

Mom walked in and she was livid.

Her son’s hair he had dyed vivid

Green, looked just like Godzilla!

She said you can’t leave the villa

Looking like that, your hair is a sight!

Can’t go to school, you’ll give a fright

If it was just the hair, wouldn’t be so bad

But he dyed his skin also, not just his head.

The mother was stymied, what could she do

She yelled, what’s the matter with you?

Don’t worry he said, it’s only for school

I’m trying out for a play, takes place near a pool.

I play the prince who’s disguised as a frog

All I have to do is sit on a log

A princess falls in love with me

Gives me a kiss and then I flee.

I disappear quickly behind the curtains

Then come out as me, in tights and a jerkin.

Everyone cheers, the audience clapping

Happily ever after, with our great acting.

Word Prompt-Food

Food, a good subject for today since I’m making a list and checking it twice to grocery shop tomorrow. One roll of toilet paper left, so the trip is very necessary, as opposed to just necessary. I’m also out of all my other paper goods, and flour, sugar, eggs, bread…..you know, the staples.  I’ve stopped using credit cards, etc, so spending is right there, no waiting till the next month. Funny how all bills are due on the first and I get paid in the middle, so some tap dancing is required. Of course if I wrote everything down, it would be easier to keep track, but I don’t. I just have auto pay right through my bank so I don’t have to worry about stamps or mailing. Mailing anything is a pain in bad weather because the boxes are a ways away from me.
And the most important food I’ll buy without fail, is coffee. I can forego food, but not coffee.

 “Happy grocery shopping to you!”🍇🍐🍊🍏🥒🍅🥑🍞🥚🧀🍌🍠🥔🌽
