Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practioner- Week 12 – 200 words

“Oh my goodness, I think they’re going to crash! Look how close they are! Oh, Frank, our children. I can hardly look….Frank!”

As their mother, Helen could not contain her fear. Two of her precious children were literally hanging by a thread. A strong thread, but dangling over a deep ravine. The thread was a cable suspended from a rescue helicopter. It was moving from side to side and her oldest boys were depending on the cable to bring them to safety.

That morning Helen and Frank’s sons started out to climb cliffs at a nearby park. They had a minimum of equipment and experience and maximum confidence, a common characteristic of teenage boys. Everything was going good until Jeff relied on a shale rock to hold up his left foot. It gave way and his brother Frank Jr. was yanked off his secured spot as Jeff’s weight tightened his rope. Frank was able to steady himself, having more experience than his younger brother. They also had enough foresight to bring a cellphone. Frank held his brother long enough for the rescuers to arrive.

Helen and Frank Sr. were relieved and thankful to see their boys safely in the copter.

Prompt 38- Motion

First thought at seeing this Prompt, was the motion of riding horses. I liked the sort of rocking, easy movement of the horses gait, but going down a hill always scared me a little. I felt like I was going to fall forward over the horse’s head. Maybe I needed stronger thighs! Zig-zagging my way down mostly prevented this.

A not so pleasant motion is the one you get riding in a small plane and trying to read. I was going over the Rocky Mountains from Denver to Montrose, Colorado. There were six passengers. I don’t have a fear of flying, so I was relaxing reading a book. At least I was trying to. During the turbulence, my arms holding my reading material kept jumping up and down. It was actually amusing. I finally gave up and enjoyed the scenery when we came down in altitude. It was an eventful 45 minute trip.

Daily Prompt: ย Instinct

I can and do, get myself into trouble with the process of going with my instinct. We all have it, of course as humans we are not as attuned to it as regular animals. This is an example.

We were driving down the highway and on the left side was an apartment complex. Windows were viewing the highway. As we passed by, I noticed a pick up truck on the right side of the highway, parked up on the grassy bank. Unusually parked, he was perpendicular to the highway and headed towards the road. There was a man in the driver’s seat intently watching the apartment building.

I’m not often a suspicious person, but the whole scene gave me the creeps. Part of it may have been the fact that the day before, an elderly man had been shot just outside his apartment in this area.

Call it suspicious, or instinct, wrong or right? I was almost ready to call the police to have this guy checked out. Of course he was parked illegally and on this busy highway I can’t imagine him bolting across all four lanes horizontally to reach the apartments. But guns are prevalent here. It would not be surprising to find a weapon in anyone’s vehicle here.

Was it my instinct or not? Ever been in a situation where someone comes close by and it gives you an eerie feeling you can’t explain? I believe it’s instinct.

Daily Prompt: Immerse

Well this should be easy to put in a verse

Yes, I’m writing about Prompt immerse

Although you’re reading, it could be worse

You could be riding in the back of a hearse

Everyone speaks of the great hereafter

Preachers claim it to their church rafters

For me, I’m puzzled by such lofty vows

Do you think it applies to all of us now?

I’ve always thought so until that day

A new leader came our way

Making hateful and rude remarks

Caused a few to create sparks

But who knows what fate awaits us all

You may be in heaven having a ball

Or down deep in a dungeon of sorts

Where a devil smiles and says, “Howdy, Sport!”
