Stories By 5 – Depression

She looked out at the night.  The freezing temperatures prevented the snow from falling, but tiny ice crystals formed on her surroundings, reflecting the the park lights.  Soon the icy etchings would fill her window.  It was cold, but beautiful, reminiscent of her life love, Wolfe.  She was waiting for him to return.  She was used to these solo trips of his, and ultimately, it was the best for both of them.

Wolfe wasn’t always cool and distant.  Some of the time he was charming and entertaining, but there was a dark side to him.  She knew his past, knew what he felt badly about, people he hurt.  Knowing this however, never changed her mind about him. She fell in love quickly and as time went on, her love became passion and even obsession.  They met on a whim, a double date with her sister.  Her sister asked her to go, for Layna had been unwell, now recovered.  Layna was a lonely forty year old woman.  She had never married and her sister was trying to help her meet someone.

The evening of the date, Layna did her best to look attractive and eager to meet someone.  In her heart she was nervous and not expecting anything, especially what happened.  As they entered the restaurant, Layna’s eyes suddenly saw Wolfe.  She was instantly attracted, her blushing smile betrayed her feelings, and Wolfe took it all in.  He was handsome with a grayish beard and the most beautiful blue eyes.  He looked at Layna and was surprised by the feeling that hit him immediately.

The night was a success and Wolfe and Layna were never apart for long after their first meeting.  They became constant companions, but there was always something there, an uncomfortable presence that Layna didn’t understand.  Whatever it was didn’t matter to her, there was an undeniable connection between them.

After a few months, they were to be married.  The night before the wedding, Wolfe told her of his past and how ashamed he was. Layna preferred to think only of the man he was now, a changed person.  After the wedding, they were inseparable.  They mostly kept to themselves and everyone thought they were just honeymooning.  The truth was they needed no one else and because Wolfe preferred it. They were devoted to each other and didn’t really care for parties or other social gatherings.  After a while, Layna’s sister became worried that they were always avoiding the family.

Wolfe suffered from depression. He could hide it most of the time, and only Layna knew him well.  He was not outgoing, but if the rare occasion arose, he could convincingly be the life of the party. Their love didn’t change, nor their commitment to each other.  The depression certainly affected their lives, but their true relationship and undying love kept them together. Their life was not perfect, but their love for each other was.

Daily Prompt:  Hospitality

Hospitality doesn’t always have to be presented by a person.  The first thought that came to me was a flower shop.  It’s one of my favorite places and the minute you step in you are immediately surrounded by color, scents, flowers of course, and plants.  It is almost overwhelming, because there is a myriad of scent related items, candles, gifts, cards, and notes.  Some flower shops offer fruit and spice flavored teas, as well as pots and vases, cups, and more to hold your favorite blooms.  Whatever delights you seek of this kind, you will find in this treasure house.  Enjoy the hospitality.

Tale Weaver – Flamhsures

Joe was an accomplished con man. He could run the flamhsures scam better than anyone. It took practice and at his age, he had plenty. The trick required a couple of extra grifters who also knew how to pull off a con with no mistakes. Being in the business a long time, he knew who he could trust, and there were only a few.

The nature of a con game is to trust no one while fooling the mark into completely trusting you! This game has been practiced since day one. You might even say the serpent in the garden was one. But Joe was one of the best. The fact he’d been pulling off these scams without spending one day in jail was well known in the underground, but apparently not by the law.

Joe had made the plans already, he just needed two extras to help him pull it off. He phoned the two he trusted most and they decided to meet at a bar close by. Joe explained the trickiest con of all, the flamhsures. The other guys had no experience with it, so just listened. The flamhsures consisted of trickery, deception, illusion, and distraction. All segments had to coincide perfectly to ensure success. It was the ultimate magic trick of the con artist.

The Choice

I could keep on running. I could fool the dogs staying in the stream but that would mean going into the tunnel. How old is it? Where does it come out? Would I even be able to come out the other side? I haven’t been here before, I don’t know the area, and I want to get out of this water. It’s getting colder and I’m soaking wet.

I hear them coming, those howling, high pitched whines when they’ve found my scent. They’re closer. Should I keep going and brave the tunnel? It may have no other opening, it may be the entrance to a huge deep hole. Would I be able to breathe in there, are there snakes?

If I go into the tunnel and they follow. . .if there’s no other opening, I’ll be trapped! Their barks are louder, pretty soon they’ll see me and then I’m caught. The tunnel is so dark, covered in moss, it will be wet and cold there, too. I have no choice. At least if the water masks my scent, I have a chance.  There’s no chance on the open bank.

I’m going in, my feet sink slightly. I feel the air and the water are much colder here. I can’t see anything but it will take time for my eyes to adjust. I feel a shiver up my legs traveling up my spine. Is it a shiver? Or is it something. . .oh my God, I can feel it! It’s not a shiver, it’s a vine or an arm or a snake, what the hell is it? It’s wrapping around me. It’s choking me. I barely hear the dogs outside. I’m being dragged down, down and I feel a slimy presence engulfing me. I can hardly breathe. I should have stayed out of here. I should have. . .

Outside the tunnels, the dogs were anxiously watching the entrance, howling and whining louder than ever before.

The Bubblegum Trade

“I’ll give you twenty-five cents and a piece of bubblegum.” He reached deep into his pocket and pulled out a linty piece of unwrapped gum. In his other pocket he found the quarter.

“Uh, Bobby! This gum looks like it’s been licked! Yuck, no thanks! I’ll take the quarter, what else ya got?”

The two boys were sitting on Sally’s stoop. Negotiating a trade always was an interesting way to fill lazy Sunday afternoons. Bobby needed a present and Joey just retrieved a ring from the gumball machine.

“Okay”, as he took the coin,”Sally’s gonna love it!”

Daily Prompt: Final

I was laying there having a spinal
While they fiddled around the vaginal
Now don’t lose your feet
I’m always discreet.
I was laying there till the final
Doctor finished with all that was vital
Anyway, according to his title
Should know what to do; it’s primal
To complete what I need
But he worked with such speed
Made me wonder if he had a title.
Or could he be homicidal?

When he finished I was revived
Still no pain, guess I had survived
When they lifted the blue piece of vinyl
I realized I was in denial
Operation so crude
I had been tattooed!
With a vision so horribly tribal
To the mirror I stumbled
Then heard the “crowd” mumble
This tat is going to go viral!

Three Line Tales – The Song

He was tired. It had been a long day of rehearsals and then performing the gig tonight. He spent the night before perfecting the song written for her.

As he sat on the edge of the stage he felt forgotten. Perfecting the song to say everything he wanted was hard, but her not being present tonight to hear it, was worse. Something must have gone wrong, or something he said, or didn’t say? He felt like crying, but decided to try the song again.

The words came more easily this time. He looked up to see her walking in, smiling.

Three Line Tales, Week 67

SoCS May 13/17

Howdy Folks!  It’s your old friend and neighbor saying “Happy trails to you”….the old Roy Rogers and Dale Evans sign off song.  Our family loved that show, and the two stars were almost heroes in our eyes as kids.  We even named our horse Trigger!  The language of this song is simple, and to the point.  So have a great weekend everyone, until we meet again!

Daily Prompt:  Maze

Ever have one of those days
When everything looks sideways
It’s not upright
Makes you uptight
You feel like your mind’s in a haze
You hope that it’s only a phase
Like the moon at night
Nothing feels right
Run around as if in a maze
Then when your eyes start to glaze
And you can’t understand the sight
Relax, and don’t try to fight
It’s another one of those days.
