No Deniability

On September 18th and 19th, National Geographic Explorer Stephen Wilkes spent 30 consecutive hours on a lift at 45 feet in the air photographing a public installation on the National Mall, In America: Remember

This installation by Suzanne Firstenberg comprises 670,000 white flags, each representing a life lost to COVID-19. Over the weekend, the U.S. breached the threshold of 700,000 lives lost. Wilkes implemented his renowned Day to Nightphotographing style in order to capture this image. This involved taking 4,882 photos over the course of 30 hours and blending them together for this final product. NPR spoke to Wilkes about the project.

It was only yesterday when a cupped arrangement of a dried nose gay reminded me of that red hat you wore. I dressed you in your warm parka, and you would tug your canvas bag over your shoulder, and went off to school. A vestige of those days comes back to me every time I see the art you made, still held in frames on my wall and desk. They along with the dried flowers, serve as a reminder of how adroit you were in those classes, and the talented man you’ve become. Your dad always portrayed a gruff attitude towards your dreams, but I think he secretly knew you would succeed in your career.

Fandango’s Flash Fiction #138 – Gift Giver Goof

The tension was palpable at the scene of the accident. Joe was on his way with his gift of a small sewing machine for his best friends’ wedding, Charlie and Mike. Mike had just landed a “craft your own” business and this gift would be well used. Charlie was a costume designer for the local theater group so he would probably use the handy machine also.

Thinking he had made the perfect choice and his mind adrift, Joe had to suddenly swerve to get back in his own lane, and then to the parking area to avoid hitting the UPS truck. The UPS truck driver also swerved to the right and ended up on the steep embankment to avoid Charlie. The police were called and after his being angry episode, the UPS driver and police all had a laugh about Joe standing there, happy to have saved his wedding gift.

The Sunday Whirl

Back here in the seventies Colorado, when the Broncos football team was in their prime, maybe we would get a chance to see them in person. It was always fun, loud, and interesting. We used a friend’s ticket and their seats were in the space on the rail of upper area, right on the 50 yard line! We would cram hot sandwiches in foil along with cocoa spiked with peppermint schnapps to avenge snow covered cold seating. It added some comfort, but all was enjoyed despite weather. In the warmer times some lame beer drinkers would cause a ruckus and you’d have to pull your hoodie up, but for the most part it was a memorable fun event.

3TC – Hassle 3000

I guess it’s insuperable

Probably inevitable

My limited mind not splitting hairs

Get a shiver thinking, I was unaware

When the curse occurred

While being served

At the Verizon store

Should have known more

About prices they quoted

Now billing’s been bloated—

Froth from my mouth floated

Store cruise now demoted.

Didn’t realize they were cryptic

Quoting false statistics

About such large future bills

New phone is now not a thrill.
