The gentleman shifted in his seat. The train was exceptionally bumpy today. His suitcase toppled off the seat and onto the treaded platform. A stiff breeze rushed in the window. “I think the weather is making this trip more unpleasant than usual” he said to the young lady across from him. Miss Blake was going to ignore the man but since his case had fallen at her feet, she had no choice but to engage him. “Let me help you” as she grabbed the braided rope handgrip placing it back on the seat beside him. “Thank you, Miss. May I ask, what is your travel destination?” “Of course. I’m going to see the capital. There is a harvest festival in the area I plan on attending.” “Oh, my. . .my destination as well! An Octoberfest you say? I’m going to the capital for business, but the festival sounds inviting.” He held her eyes for a second, hoping his attempt at joining her would be accepted. “Well then, would you care to meet there? They have wonderful warm cider. Perhaps you could join me?” He noticed a sparkle in her eyes as she offered the invitation. “Delighted! Here’s my number, will you text me when and where?” “Yes.” She took the number and the train came to a stop. Both passengers left the car with a much brighter attitude than they had at the beginning of their trip.

“Smooth Operator” was playing on the sound system as the man pretending to be suave tried to glide into the room. Joe had read every issue of GQ, Men’s Health, Esquire, and the Wall Street Journal. He assumed he was well dressed and well versed in any subject that might come up in conversation.

Thanks to the bartender, he was introduced to a beautiful woman. He immediately asked her to dance and he was glad he had practiced some Fred Astaire techniques.

Unknown to Joe, the woman was only an apparition and as soon as he maneuvered her into a darkened corner for a kiss, she disappeared.

I remember when it was a freezing winter day outside our one room schoolhouse. No matter the weather we all – four in my grade – dressed up in our winter weather paraphernalia to go outside at least for lunch recess, an hour. I had just finished dressing and ready to go out and couldn’t get them off to go to the bathroom in time, before wetting my pants. How embarrassed I was as I sat behind a screen, in front of the pot belly stove in the corner, waiting for my pants to dry. In a one room school – 1-6 grades only – with less than 25 students, all country neighbors, the embarrassment lived on.

It’s not a forge in the normal sense, but one is a vessel for wood smoking. My grandson is a fervent cooker of all things using a grill, lots of grills, smokers, etc. 😄
