Winter Morning

A grisly cold day was wafting its way into the kitchen and breakfast was going to be a puerile treat. It was the first day of winter which was settling in with Jack Frost windows and traditional hot chocolate was already sitting on the table.

I stirred up their favorite chocolate chip pancakes. The scent of chocolate called them to sit lined up like birds on a wire at the counter, ready to partake.

The youngest of the brood ran to the window and exclaimed “it’s snowing! This is going to be a terrific day!”

Word of the Day – Dinner

Take from your freezer, slit open the plastic

Place on the spinner, hope for something fantastic

It won’t ever take long

You can hardly go wrong

It’s easy and fast

A delicious repast!

That is what they say

In the ads today.

All will be well

As the cellophane swells,

Until you remove it, take a look

Potatoes all mashed in a corner nook

The dessert dried up, is barely there

The slab of meat no longer rare

The portions are small, and above all

Microwave dinners are a definite pall.

Fandango’s Friday Flashback 10-15-17

***

He held her arm, steadying her as they climbed the steps.  They hadn’t been here for fifty years and it was a difficult climb.  The steps were now moss covered and a bit slippery.  The grounds were slightly overgrown, but he was not deterred.

James and Mary met fifty-one years ago at a pub nearby.  Both were in university and enjoying a much needed time to relax.  The semester was over and both were ready for a new adventure.  Everything was ahead of them, but on that night they wanted to just “be”.  Introduced by friends, James and Mary immediately felt a need to know each other better.  This relationship ended up in a lasting marriage.

After combining two successful careers and children, they managed a few trips to secluded venues.  Their life was nurturing and complete.  James decided to surprise Mary here where they had a special memory.  “I remember this place” she told him.

At the top of the stairs, Mary sat down on the stonewall.  James bent down on one knee.  Mary asked if he was all right.  “I am more than all right, my love.  I want to ask you a very important question.”  Mary’s face showed a knowing smile.  “Will you marry me again, love of my life?”

“Here, now?”

“This is where I proposed the first time fifty years ago today, and I want to ask you again.  Will you spend the next fifty years with me?”  James reached into his pocket and hesitated before placing another tiny gold band on her left hand.  Mary reached down and held his face in her hands.

“I want to spend eternity with you, my dear” Mary lovingly replied, and offered her hand for the ring.

Midweek Monday Peeve

You buy fruit and hope it will ripen under a clear tent on the kitchen shelf. . .which leads me to a question. Any shows or movies I have watched always feature a fruit bowl, sometimes in a living room. . .am I the only one, again?

Who eats fruit in the living room? They must eat only dry fruit or I’m just sloppy with the juice. And how come it always looks undisturbed and fresh? Okay, that aside and my peeve is this. Why is each single fruit except grapes individually labeled with an impossible to remove sticker?

The print is so small I doubt anyone stops to read it, and if you like plums, peaches or tomatoes to eat when ripe? Try removing it without destroying the fruit and losing half the skin! They do not wash off. Oh and the shows that feature fruit have no fruit flies? A mystery?

“And now we present two identical Ming vahzes.”

“Those aren’t matching at all! Look at that small fissure! It’s certainly no secret to see, and saying they are identical is malarkey!”

(This conversation made public in a segment of the ancient items television show.)
