It’s a cool sunny day here in my home in Wyoming, and that’s the way I like it! Autumn is here, my favorite time of year and even though the retailers are pushing Christmas, I like the fall holidays. It makes me wonder if the Christmas stuff including edible items are all from last year’s stock— like unsold Easter candy? Well that ruined my appetite, I’m just having coffee.

What’s up with Apple?

Tried to download the new upgrade and everything went blooey😱. Then I was sent multiple messages to enter a passcode – a set of six numbers and I did so over and over to be told they were incorrect even though copied off message correctly. I had to change my password. Then was told everything would be merged into the cloud and my photos etc could only be accessed there. What the dickens? My phone had been acting up so when I first tried to download the upgrade thinking it would fix anything, it wouldn’t do it. Weird, or is it just me, again??? Calgon , take me away!

And so for today’s poetry prompt it’s all about couples, twos, in other words couplets!

1. The Cote – a poem of uneven couplets attributed to John Schroeder. L1 being a single imperative verb, L2 is a glossing or expansion of L1. Rhyme and meter is of your own choosing. For example:

Mingle,
Mix and blend, enjoy the place

Meet,
Chance upon receptive face

Stop

That much salt is bad for you

Sprinkle

Just a bit does the trick

I’m not sure if this post qualifies 😀

Reena’s Xploration Challenge #249

Legacy…to me this means something of value you give to your relatives or friends when you pass away. I really don’t have much to offer my family in this respect. This year when my granddaughter turned 16, I gave her my gold circle locket necklace that has my initials and birthdate on it which I received at a 16th birthday, 60 years ago. If that’s considered a legacy then so be it.

We have moved so much and I have two storage units but there’s rarely anything in there that I would consider to have enough value to give or leave to anyone.

When my mom died, I wanted something but really received nothing except a pair of earrings and it saddens me to see pics of my three sister’s homes with items I might wish to have had. But I lived two thousand miles away and that was the excuse.

When my father died there were items that I would’ve like to have given my grandkids but his new wife sold or gave away to strangers all of his things. Even a family bible to a stranger.

I’ve already told my family that if there’s anything they ever want just take it now because I don’t need it and if they can use it, have at it. My daughter and I were looking at jewelry yesterday for a steampunk party outfit and I looked at my plain white gold wedding band and asked her, “well I wonder if they’ll cremate me with this ring on or would you like to have it?” She looked at me and incredulously and said, “of course I’d want it”. And then we had a laugh because everybody in the family thinks I’m immortal because I’ve already died twice from meds reactions. So I guess problem solved.

Just like everything else in life if you want to survive you have to have a sense of humor.

REBLOG: Chilled Yet by Jill Dennison

Posted by jilldennison under Global Issues, History, Political commentary

Back in February, Russia’s dictator aka ‘President’ Vladimir Putin apparently thought he could launch an attack on neighboring Ukraine and that the Ukrainians were so weak or so stupid that they would simply lie down and turn over their country to him.  Well, he had another think coming!  Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stood firm and the Ukrainian people basically gave Putin the middle finger.  Despite their losses, they continue to stand firm today and with only help in military hardware resources, not human resources, from other nations, Ukraine has made Putin’s life significantly harder, has turned the tides just a bit.  Where Putin expected an easy victory 7 months ago, he is now facing the very real possibility of defeat.

However, if you thought Putin would back off, leave well enough alone and go home to lick his wounds, you’ll need to rethink that.  For starters, he has mobilized some 300,000 ‘military reservists’.  If you are a male between the ages of 18 and 65 years of age, you are now forbidden to leave the country.  Most other people are trying their best to get the hell out, and all flights out of Russia are filled to capacity through at least Friday.

Given that most Russians are not in favour of the war against Ukraine … most have family members living in Ukraine … there have been anti-war protests in a number of cities across Russia.  Just in the last few days, over 1,200 such protestors were arrested for no crime more serious than simply disagreeing with Putin’s goal of destroying another nation.

Last night, Putin gave a rare address to his nation … although it seemed to be intended for others, such as leaders of western nations.  In his speech, he warned that …

“NATO is conducting reconnaissance across the south of Russia. Washington, London and Brussels are directly pushing Kyiv to move military action to our country. They are openly saying that Russia should be defeated on the battlefield by any means.

Nuclear blackmail has also been used. We are talking not only about the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant – encouraged by the West – which threatens to cause a nuclear catastrophe but also about statements from senior representatives of NATO countries about the possibility and permissibility of using weapons of mass destruction against Russia: nuclear weapons.

I would like to remind those who make such statements about Russia that our country also possesses various means of destruction, and in some cases, they are more modern than those of NATO countries. When the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we, of course, will use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people.

This is not a bluff. And those who try to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the weathervane can turn and point towards them.”

Foolish talk?  Sure.  But a cornered rat is a dangerous creature.  Vladimir Putin is a calculating madman who would see the world destroyed rather than admit he lost (does that remind you of anyone closer to home?)  U.S. President Biden responded while giving a speech to the United Nations General Assembly last night …

“This war is about extinguishing Ukraine’s right to exist as a state, plain and simple, and [Ukrainians’] right to exist as a people. Wherever you are, wherever you live, whatever you believe, that should make your blood run cold.

The United States wants this war to end on just terms, on terms we’re all signed up for – that you cannot seize a nation’s territory by force. The only country standing in the way of that is Russia. But no one threatened Russia and no one other than Russia sought conflict.”

Most of you are old enough to remember the Cold War between the USSR and the U.S. that began in 1947 and did not end until 1991 when the Soviet Union was dissolved.  I well remember air raid drills in school when we were made to crouch under our desks and put our hands over our heads … as if that was actually going to protect us in the event of a nuclear bomb!  Frankly, I never want to return to those days, but … it damn sure sounds to me as if that is where we are heading.  In the words of Roger Cohen, a New York Timesbureau chief who has observed international affairs for more than 30 years …

“Perhaps not since the Cuban missile crisis six decades ago have American and Russian leaders confronted each other so explicitly and sharply on the danger of nuclear war.”

What is the solution? IS there a solution? Wiser heads than mine will have to answer that question. Let us hope there are some who can.

It started as Arizona dreaming

Quiet Basil was hidden, scheming

Fennel seed kept sprouting

Mulling spices hid his outing

Paprika colored my desires

Aleppo pepper stirred the fires

Nutmeg bridged the gap

Lemongrass cured the flap

Preferring Vanilla over Tuscan sunset

Sunny Paris over Sea salt sweat

Decided my Mural of flavor

Needed mildness over savor.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Where were you in 1978? If you weren’t born where were you in 2008? In 1978 I was living in Lakewood, Colorado with my husband and kids aged 7, 9 and 11.

2. Raise your hand if you remember records playing at a speed of 78 rpm? What’s a topic that when it comes up you ‘sound like a broken record’? I haven’t heard that referring to myself but it may have been said about me☺️ As a child we delighted in going up to the attic to play ancient 78s on an actual gramophone. Later we had a record player and my mom would put on an old 78 with the official recording of army calisthenics and we’d do them in the dining room. Man I am old!

3. What’s the last thing you recorded in some way? One of a treasured recording is a cassette tape of a Christmas when our kids were little.

4. Thursday is the first day of fall (in the northern hemisphere). How do you feel about the changing seasons? Something you’re looking forward to this fall? Fall is my absolute favorite season and I love all aspects of it.

5. In what way (or ways) are you like the apple that didn’t ‘fall far from the tree’? I suppose humor and smart ass attitude come from my father.

6. Insert your own random thought here. Composing this I am taken back once again to childhood and how amazing it was with fostered imagination and freedom of the outdoors.

Sijo Wednesday – Balance

https://www.canyoneering.net/5-tips-for-better-balance/

Achieving balance in our lives, is a constant struggle for most

Coming of age, middle age and old age, it remains true

We still strive to maintain balance, whatever that personally means
