2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge

Write a scary poem.

Creaking hinges start the chill

Surely it’s no one thinking ill

Or thoughts of vicious harm

Surely no cause to be alarmed

But then a louder noise is heard

My bedroom door opens a third

Coming around the wooden frame

A vision of Hitchcock fame

Birds, and birds, too many to count

They flutter in, a huge amount

Swooping down in malevolent acts

I try to hide under quilted wraps

They land and peck and tear the toile

I’m helpless under the thin veil

I start to scream to anyone near

They don’t come hearing my fear

There seems to be no escape

As my body shivers and shakes

The black ravens win the night

I lay there dead, a bloody sight.

Fandangos Friday Flashback

SoCS Veterans Day 2017

I’m not sure how to incorporate “arm” into my post this morning.  My first thought for some peculiar reason is “the long arm of the law”.  I’ll just leave it there because I don’t have any idea why I’m thinking that….But I have good, happy news, so if you’re still reading…you know I love movies.

My two grandsons and I splurged on the new ARQ theater here and saw “Thor Ragnarok” last night.  It was fun!  I had wanted to see it for a while.  It is unlike the other Thor and Avengers movies, but it takes the humor from those and pumps it up big time, and has references and puns about them.  It’s like watching a comic book in action.  If you see it, tell me if you got the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory bit.

My favorite character besides Thor of course, is Korg, played by Taika Waititi, the director of TR. I tried to Google how many people it took to make this movie with no luck. The credits are long but you need to watch them. I can’t imagine there is a Visual Arts company not listed. I recommend this movie for a fun get out of yourself laugh adventure.

  2. Did you have a boisterous or a more reserved personality?Mostly reserved
  3. Were you more confident or did you tend to be insecure? Definitely insecure

  6. Did you like school or dread it? Loved school
  7. Did you like the outdoors or did you prefer staying inside? Outdoors always
  8. Did you have deep thoughts about the world, the universe, etc., or did you only see as far as where you lived? I doubt I had deep thoughts until I started leaning about the world such as the Vietnam war, civil rights, Berlin Wall etc
  9. What did you want to be when you grew up? A dancer
  10. Looking back, how did you fare as an adult? Are you still that same person or have you changed? If you changed, was it a dramatic shift or just slight changes? Did you end up in the profession you thought you would? Certainly not. I married too young and that was my life from then until about ten years ago.

Vacation

The Jones family was geared up for a sunny Hawaiian vacation with surfing, sunning, snorkeling and diving.
Joe and his teenage sons were so excited to be doing daring activities they barely noticed the tour guide’s destination brochure.
As the brawny men of the family gathered at meeting point and surveyed the dock, Joe voiced their united opinions, “oh hell no!”

User Friendly

Back in 1977 widely learned

User friendly was the term

Hope for the tech disadvantaged

People who’s computers they had ravaged

Their psyche telling them to think badly

About previous skills that came in handy

Harlan Crowder in ‘72

Designer for software just for you

Decided it was the perfect time

To make useful your computer dime

After the basic $1500 expense

He wanted to use common sense.

A very interesting man, Mr. Crowder. You can read about him here:Excerpt from “User Friendly” by Cliff Kuang and Robert Fabricant. https://www.wbur.org/onpoint/2019/11/21/user-friendly-design-cliff-kuang-robert-fabricant

“The programs simply didn’t consider what someone else might do with them. To Crowder, they weren’t user friendly. And so Crowder proposed that a computer program be gauged not just on how well it solved a problem but on how easy it made the lives of the people trying to solve it. To be clear, he didn’t actually invent the term. As far as he knows, it had been floating around in the air, and it was there when he needed it. Which tends to prove how powerful it was—how it encapsulated something that people had started to feel.”

Democracy Lives!

Great news for Colorado voters—even Republicans decided to vote out the gun toting “mom” Lauren Boebert! The votes are still being counted and with such a small margin between, no doubt there will be controversy, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. And that alone is enough to celebrate, but there’s more:

“Democratic state Rep. Yadira Caraveo has won the state’s most closely contested and closely watched congressional race this year to become the first representative from Colorado’s new 8th Congressional District. “…it’s also the district with the most Latino residents, making up nearly 40 percent of the population.

“In many ways, the story of my family is the story of this district,” Caraveo said in the statement. “My parents immigrated here to afford us a better life. And because of their hard work, I was able to go to college, become a doctor, and live my version of the American Dream. But for too many people in Colorado, that dream has slipped out of reach. Our District deserves a leader who will fight to restore access to the American Dream for working families.”

Don’t be discouraged, things are changing, fight the good fight peacefully and vote. You will be heard.

Women’s rights to control their own bodies also won small battles, so things are looking up.
