Snow and closed roads caused the loss of three grandkids’ company but the 30th anniversary party I hosted for my daughter and husband went on as planned. I had plenty of exercise vacuuming and mopping and getting everything set up. My two oldest grandsons picked up the cake and food I ordered and the folks were indeed surprised👍🏻♥️🤠

MLMM Saturday Mix

Welcome to the Saturday Mix – Story Starter, 28 January 2023!
You will be given a sentence to start off your response. It is your choice whether you write using poetry or prose. Your sentence starter this week is:

Am I asleep, or am I dreaming? This question whirled through her mind. Seeming to swim around me, I was in a finger painting pool of bright colors. I was dizzy and the fingers of a strange hand swirling and twisting all the paint into weird round shapes is making me nauseous. Of course I was dreaming. I never learn! No more “everything on your” pizzas for me!

Ads on games drive me crazy so I don’t play many. I do crosswords with my sister and we chat during it. I put the word “hauling” and said jokingly it was my either that or “urinal” and I’ve always hated that word. The game app put stars instead of the word hated, what?? I tried again and it threatened to block me. I think I’ll throw in the towel with games online. Between words being censured and ads, it’s hardly worth it.

One Book More

I really enjoy Winslow’s easy style of writing and have read more serious books by him about drug cartels, the DEA, the police, but the first book I read of his was “Dawn Patrol” where I fell for Boone Daniels. I revisited the beach a few days ago reading “The Gentlemen’s Hour”. A favorite excerpt and why I love this character:

(Boone tries to work out what to wear to a booty call when you’ve been putting it off for more than three months, have confused feelings for the person and is it really a booty call or just the continuation of a kiss or a conversation about the relationship and where it’s going. What do you wear to a conversation about a relationship—usually body armor, although he hasn’t owned a Kevlar vest since he left the force and has not a lot from which to choose. He has a winter wedding and funeral suit and a summer wedding and funeral suit, one white and one blue dress shirt, and a single pair of khaki trousers that Cheerful ordered for him from the Lands’ End catalog, and have never been off the hanger, otherwise his wardrobe, such as it is, consists of five pairs of jeans in various states of disrepair, T-shirts, and long sleeve pullovers. Ripcurl collection of board shorts make up a large part of his wardrobe, as for footwear he owns, the black dress shoes that go with the wedding and funeral suits, three pairs of sandals and one pair of black sketchers tennis shoes, because the sketchers store is just a block from his office. Boone decides on the white dress shirt and his least favorite jeans, and then sits there with mental paralysis of the choice of the tennis or dress shoes. Petra might infer from the tennis shoes that he’s taking this too causally, which would piss her off, and which he’s certainly not, but the dress shoes might signal her that he expects that they’re gonna have sex, which he sort of does, but isn’t really all that sure, and he doesn’t want her to think that he’s taking that for granted. On the other hand sandals are probably out of the question, Boone thinks. He’s mulling this over when his cell phone rings.)

“The Gentleman’s Hour” written by Don Winslow is the sequel to his excellent novel “The Dawn Patrol.” Set in laid-back San Diego’s Pacific Beach (“PB”), these two novels tell the story of Boone Daniels, itinerant surfer and private detective, former-police officer, and founding member of the Dawn Patrol.

Fandango’s Flashback Friday

Visual Prompt:1952 by rugby843 1/2016

Charlie was a hard worker. Everyone knew he gave the best shoeshine in the neighborhood. His regulars, the businessmen, would stop by every morning to receive his spit shine technique to make them look their best.

This job was backbreaking, and his knees suffered, but he was proud to do it. His mom needed him to help with the money, and the regular customers knew his situation. They always put a little extra in his cup. Charlie appreciated this and worked diligently to do the best job for them. There were other shoe shine boys down the street, but he wanted his customers to always return to him.

He was having a good day, very busy, but his back was aching and his hands tired and sore.  His cup was full.  His mom would be grateful to have the money.  But most of all he felt pride in himself.

Never a Lender Be

I decided…what the heck! I’m just going to take a nefarious course of action. I’m going to lurch right up in his face and leer like a hungry wolf, baring a dozen teeth! That should verify my feelings well. And then, and then, he might possibly yield, and return my dang lawnmower!

LURCH LEER FACE

International Holocaust Day

Here are some books that tell stories of this horrible time:

“The Tattooist of Auschwitz” is a 2018 Holocaust novel by New Zealand novelist Heather Morris. The book tells the story of how Slovakian Jew Lale Sokolov, who was imprisoned at Auschwitz in 1942, fell in love with a girl he was tattooing at the concentration camp. Wikipedia

“Night”is a 1960 memoir by Elie Wiesel based on his Holocaust experiences with his father in the Nazi German concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald in 1944–1945, toward the end of the Second World War in Europe. Wikipedia

Young Adult Selection: “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”. Berlin 1942 When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.

Please take a moment to reflect. There are people in this world who deny horrific historical events. We need to speak out.
