Besides my morning look which causes me fright

I look outside and everything’s white!

Cold and windy but there is some sun

Should be grateful it’s not gray or dun

Grandiose wooly stripes cuddle the obviously contemptuous woman. She whisked through the bookstore and asked a luminary where the children’s book section of wild animals was located. Observing her coat, he asked and she answered, yes she had been to Africa, had seen the beautiful creatures bordering the safari trail and even though she was offered a reproduction, she chose the real thing. Nothing revolutionary even entered her mind. She was of the entitled genre, a puzzle to this “ordinary” man, and never tried to obscure her status in argument.

For those new to haibun, the form consists of one to a few paragraphs of prose—usually written in the present tense—that evoke an experience and are often non-fictional/autobiographical. They may be preceded or followed by one or more haiku—nature-based, using a seasonal image—that complement without directly repeating what the prose stated.

Children no longer are allowed to give Valentines to each other in school classes, which is a shame.

Six Sentence Story

Blurry bits of icy softness filter down, slowly covering the sidewalk. Another cold winter morning in the west. Unusual freezing temperatures intimidate the travelers as news of road closures and accidents are announced. Even the everyday bright sun we enjoy does not melt the whiteness. Weary snowplow drivers trudge up into the machine cabs, holding an already cold cup of coffee. Winds threaten but it’s a snow day from school and innocent children are full of glee.
