This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
Some people say the number 13 is unlucky, but to me, it’s not unlucky at all.
I was born on the thirteenth so right away I can hear your thinking, “doomed”. I was also the thirteenth child and last in my family. Who doesn’t like being the adored baby? Finally, I was blessed with thirteen toes, which makes for really good balance and excellent jumping skills. Wanna see? Joe bent down to remove his sock and was surprised to see his new companions flee.

Joey tugged at his mom’s hand, “look!” They were walking through deep wet snow on the way to Grandma’s home, about a mile down the country road. Joey loved seeing his grandma because every time provided warm treats this time of year. Hot chocolate, sugared donuts, or a plate of cheese cubes and rye crackers. Grandma always was prepared for the children’s visits.
Joey tugged again on his mom, “look it’s a bear!” Joey’s mom stopped, suddenly frightened and grabbed Joey close.Where? Where is a bear?” Then Joey pointed to the snow laden tree by the road. She loosened her grip and sighed. Then they started laughing and walked on.

She knew he would find her. The tide would take her to Hong Kong and she would find a small place to stay, away from him. The city was so large, surely she could hide for quite a while. The breeze picked up and she grabbed her hat. There was no use trying to hide her face here. If he was persistent, he would realize she took this (ferry) and question them all. It wouldn’t be long before he would know that she went to Hong Kong. But finding exactly where she was would be difficult and hopefully take long enough so she could find a permanent place to be safe.
If only she had realized what he was really like. He seemed so loving and sweet when they first met. But only after a few weeks together she knew who he actually was. Her friends were suspicious at first but then they also grew to like this charming man. And he was charming, and beautiful, so any type of fault they might have suspected, went unheeded. She dared not confide in them. He was very manipulative and would surely find her.
They drifted beside the dock. She paid the boatman and stepped up to see an enormous sight. Lights of the city, all colors and bright. Surely she could be hidden here. She ventured forth, cautious of any curious observers. She wanted to be anonymous, her safety depended on it. After a few blocks she found a quaint rooming house. She pulled the hat down to cover most of her face. The woman at the entrance was polite and kept her questions to herself. “I have a room on this floor and one above, overlooking the street.” She chose the upstairs room. It was safer and she could use the window view to watch for him. Exhausted from the excitement and terror of the day, she fell on the bed and was asleep in seconds.
She was startled by a knock on the door. “Good morning, I have some tea for you. Would you open the door, please?”
She shook her head and smoothed her hair. Her watch read ten a.m. “I’ll be right there, thank you.”
Opening the door she noticed what a pleasant older woman her hostess was. ” I appreciate this. I didn’t expect this kindness.”
“I was a bit worried about you, dear. Is everything all right? You seemed so harried when you arrived.”
She managed a smile and took the tea tray. She sat down at the small table by the window. She was here, she was safe. Maybe she could just stay here, at least for a while. The lady was nice. If he found this place, if he came near, I wonder what she would do. Would the woman fall for his beauty and charm, or protect her ward? I don’t think I can take that chance, she thought to herself. She finished the tea, and unpacked her bag. Something discreet, she thought, as she chose her clothing for the day. I just need to blend in, with a haircut and no makeup, it should work. She had such beautiful long hair, she reminisced, as the shears made their way. Finished with her new look, she dressed and set off to find a more permanent home.

What part of the slogan is unclear? This is not lol a family resort and anyone is free to exhibition as they choose. If some overindulge in pudding desserts after dinner, so what. This is a criticism free zone.

Parenting, ah, what do you think
Children, ah, seemed a good idea
Let’s just say I was no Greek Theia
Years ago I should have thunk
And I was sober, not even drunk
That having children would change my dance
No longer living with sweet romance
Finding minutes for private time
Would have been, if happened, truly sublime
But moms and dads that are on their own
Grandparents away so they are alone
No advice if wanted, or babysit duties
We were by ourselves with various cuties.
We all survived relatively unscathed
No one even ended up crazed
Although there were moments I felt dazed
It ended well, brushed with love’s glaze.

W3 Prompt #72: Wea’ve Written Weekly
Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to choose one of these options: recall an experience you’ve had where you’ve asked for a sign, or came upon a sign unasked-for, and interpreted it and write a poem about the experience, preferably in first person.
***
Feeling depressed as we all do at times
Sat in the cloudy garden, hoping for a sign
A sign that things were not so bad
That a change in my life could be had
Lighting upon the gardening things
A beautiful dragonfly stopped his wings
I asked if he’d come to visit me
He then turned and lit on my knee
A coincidence you might say
I prefer ‘twas a sign to chase away the gray.

The excited voices in the group held to their routine, trying to soften their communication to visualize the incredible scenes. They had gathered to encourage each other not to give in to the worldwide changes taking place in every library. There were actual riots taking place everywhere. The breathtaking images came over the screen charging suspense as to the outcomes of these actions. Some of the government people in charge had a hunch this would happen and conveniently closed their doors so not to respond with any solutions. Harried police officers gathered to insure violence would not ensue, but the later the protests went on, the more dangerous it became. Banning books, restricting access, even burning books, jailing librarians and more had become untenable.
