The best soul food I’ve ever come across is not edible. It is the love of family and friends, with good conversation, hugs, laughter, honesty and trust. Definitely a food for our souls.

Cats had never been my perfect idea of a gift, even though I have wrapped a tiny one in a box as a birthday present. I refrain from divulging secrets related to that cute kitten who grew to be an overly demonstrative cat.
Meanwhile I was mindlessly dancing through the corridor to the living room. Granted it was my fault, turning around and waving my arms to the music. I had filled the room with candlelight to surprise my husband with my latest lingerie fashion statement. The swift movements I made accidentally knocked over two candles and that is what started the fiery flames. If I hadn’t stayed to save the cat, the room’s debris of ashes would have been less. Instead of trying to stop the fire I searched for the cat which I had grown to love.

She tried to stop looking, couldn’t. She tried to stop following, couldn’t do that either. It was if she was in a trance and wondered if Phil had put a curse on her. Every minute of every day she thought of him, wanted to be where he was, be close. Phil seemed oblivious to his admirer, or was he? Every once in a while he would look over his shoulder and smile.😧

Weekend Writing Prompt #339 – Cottage
This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
James had it all, but still, it was not enough. Sure, the fancy car, money to spend freely, nice home on the beach, but felt always something was missing. Feeling that for a few years, he finally decided he did have enough, he was his own person, owing to no one.
He gathered his beach chair, ice chest of beer and a towel to sit and admire the sunset as he did every night. His thoughts wouldn’t leave him alone and he frowned, trying to accept what he earlier thought.
A woman appeared a ways down the shore, walking into the surf and he noticed she was fully dressed. Curious, he just sat there watching. She stepped further into the water and he stood up thinking maybe she was doing something dangerous. He walked slowly towards her and then ran as her body finally disappeared completely in the waves. James reached and pulled at her and then she was limp in his arms. He carried her out and laid her down on the sand, felt for a pulse. It was weak, but there. He turned her until she coughed up the swallowed water. Then she seemed to wake and realize where she was.
James recoiled as her arms flew around him and whispered “thank you” over and over. He then accepted her embrace and told her she would be okay.
That was the night James realized he did need more in his life.

first frosty snowfall
it’s the twilight of the year
humbled leaves scatter
icy pools shine in cold rain
winter starts its festival
