SYW 12-4-23

Here are this week’s questions:

1. Would you rather bake or buy a cake? I’ve spent a lot of time baking cakes and homemade is best

2. Do you have your main meal during the day or in the evening? I usually have one meal a day whenever…

3. Do you have a sweet tooth or prefer savoury food? I used to now it’s more savory

4. What is one food you absolutely detest? Anything buggy looking like shrimp or most seafood

Fandango’s Story Starter

This week’s Story Starter teaser is: Dwight didn’t have much money, but he knew how to throw a helluva good party.

It didn’t take much, just a bunch of eggs, milk, sugar and a few bottles of rum. The tree and lights were already a given so hoping for a snowstorm was the only thing left. Holiday lights were left up at the cabin all year so it was just a matter of making sure the generator was working if the power went off. The firewood was plentiful and he had stocked the fridge and Mimi’s homemade bread scent beckoned the appetite. It was the annual end of year bash at Dwight and Mimi’s cabin and anyone could come as long as their snowmobile was working. A few skiers came and everyone expected to be snowed in. That was the best part!

dVerse Poets – Claire deLune

Your challenge today is to choose a piece of instrumental music (no songs, but I am happy for you to choose a piece of jazz or instrumental rock if you don’t like classical music) that speaks to you, and write a poem either about the piece, including information about its composer and content, or whatever it conjures in your head. If possible, add a link to the piece of music.

never loud exclamations

dVerse Poets Prosery

For today’s prompt, I’ve selected this line: “I was where I am
When the snow began”
. From “The Dead of Winter” by Samuel Menashe. Full poem here.

I was where I am when the snow began. The first snowfall my children saw was in 1972. My mind neither here nor there in my present form, cuddled in a soft quilt lovingly made. Always hoping and wishing, regretting and remembering. Days of snowed in hours, it’s hard to stay in the present even when it is relatively pleasing and comfortable. There is no decoration except pine cones treasured for a few years, and a string of tiny clear lights over the doorway. My thoughts travel to holidays filled seeing small children with wide eyes and hopeful grins as they tackle their stockings in early morning hours. Staying up making those stockings, then flopping into bed only to hear footsteps down the stairs too few hours later—the holiday was on. I long for those days of happy rewarding exhaustion.

The Sunday Whirl

She believed in true messages from the messiah, presented in softly moving tendrils of smoke emanating from her fireplace. It calmed her a bit, as she often found answers to prayers here in the daily warmth of her home. She found she could picture herself solving her problems with the gods’ help. Today she had prayed for safety and hoped they would keep her from death as the sounds of war grew closer. Her body shuddered in response as pebbles of gravel and a tree branch fell into her window. Her mind edgy as more gun shots fired into her home. She would not surrender, and she sent another plea into the smoky flames.

Benevolence

The exquisite compassion shown brightly in the small space of the tomb. A trial by fire was beginning and then an angel of mercy seemed to migrate over the vault itself. The fire ceased and the person was freed. This story was spoken of often, found in the archive of “passionate papers”.
