No Theme Thursday 3

A tranquil scene in days gone by

Stories told, children sitting, rapt

Grandparent memories, never shy

Wide eyed kids now entrapped

Listening to the old one’s tales

Lifting of the history veiled

From politics to wars he fought

Told the truth, not what was taught

Those days were rare to be found

When truths revealed were profound.

Thanks again, Kevin for the great images.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt

This story expresses a personal peeve of mine concerning the way the “religious right” is trying to take over our schools. These attempts are specifically against the Constitution of the United States.

“A pirate!” Joey shouted when his mom asked what he wanted to be for Halloween this year. Julie had been one of the parents who fought to continue having parties at school, for elementary age children. She knew there were going to be dissenters when it comes to anything they deemed anti religion, especially Halloween, supposedly Satan’s creation. However, Julie made the costume, decorated their home with jack-o’-lanterns, and took Joey trick or treating.

First of all, let’s talk about chicken. What is up with chicken and waffles? I like chicken, I like waffles but putting them together just gives me a chill. And eggs, I like eggs. I like them boiled, fried, poached or scrambled, but I don’t eat them much anymore. I only buy a pack of six and I usually end up throwing a couple away by the end of the month. I always think when I purchase them that I might need them to bake some thing like banana bread. I do take a couple and make egg salad and sometimes I even poach a couple. It just depends on if I have bread – that’s another thing I’m trying not to eat a lot of. I’m trying to eat mostly fruits and vegetables and using proteins such as beans, certain cheeses, fish, and sometimes chicken. Anybody else trying this?

And food items are expensive and if you live on a fixed income which I do, you’re picky with what you buy. I don’t like ordering groceries online because you never know who’s going to shop for those and what they’re going to pick out. Especially fruit that looks good on the outside and on the inside it’s dry, and tasteless. This wasn’t meant to be a rant of any kind or a complaint, I’m just stating facts in my own life. As to which came first, the chicken or the egg, I’ll let you figure that out. Have a nice weekend.

The Broom

***

Finally, a job to do

I’ve been waiting in the closet

Just between me and you

There’s been many small deposits

I like a dog and cat okay

But they are messy every day

If you don’t watch out and clean

Leavings picked up in a routine

Everything will start to smell

Your nice room turns into hell

So please, I’m a broom, put me to use

Use the attached spray cleaner too

I promise I will clean it well

Make this a pleasant place to dwell

Gunnar stared down at the treasure, wondering if it was worth it. The deaths, the men beside him who fell, what would they say to see all of this? This mound of jewels and gold was not the goal. The goal was to oust the dictator of a king that held the villagers for ransom. The king preferred to call it taxes owed for maintaining a protective sphere around the villages. The people in those villages were starving, forced to become soldiers for the king in their child to teen years, and the women left to scrape by. Gunnar decided to let the villagers have the spoils and he divided it all between the villagers and his fallen men.

Fandango’s Flashback Friday

I said last year when I reached the ripe old age – why doesn’t that seem like a complimentary remark? – of 70, that it would be my last time celebrating my birthday. The only significance the number holds is that my mom died at seventy which is way too young. She had a heart condition for years and finally succumbed to a massive attack on July 31, 1976.

I was always afraid my own heart might give out so exercised, ate well, and tried to stay healthy. My heart is perfectly healthy. I never gave a thought to my impending cancer bouts.

1976 is also significant not only because of the USA’s 200th birthday, but because I turned thirty. We had visited my folks in June that year but I had no idea mom was in such bad health. I flew from Denver to NE and did get a few hours with her before she died. I’ll never forget any of the details of arrangements, sorrowful visits from well wishers, etc. I remained strong for my father’s sake and cried myself to sleep when I was alone at night.

So short story long, yes, it’s my birthday this month and yes I plan on surviving a lot longer than my mom. What a pita, losing your mom! I miss her so.

Fandango’s Flashback Friday — June 28th

No Theme Thursday

I keep it hidden most of the time
my real personality doesn’t fit in this clime
people might question their safety with me
but I’ll accommodate for certain fees
you see, I’m a lawyer of good reputation
I’ll give you excellent representation
I have certain skills that others do not
and certain abilities you can’t spot
my facade of the suit and dark glasses
helps me seen as human, for passing
people give me a second look
quickly put their nose back in their book
an illusion they think and shake their head
and if not, they might end up dead
I confess I’ve certain lethal tendencies
usually I don’t mention these
but I see you are a discerning guy
and contemplating if you should try
to hire me with my unusual traits
be assured I say in good faith
I will defend you and we’ll win the case.

The Writer’s Workshop

***

I chose number 2, eight sentence post:

When you want to help but can’t, the feeling grates. Having resources as some people do, my question to them is, why don’t you? Besides buying a second or third home, another automobile that you rarely use, store and look at, or a bigger yacht, help someone! Give money or your time to a shelter, food bank, free clinic, buy a homeless person’s lunch, visit a children’s institution and bring them a treat. Bring a celebrity to a children’s hospital. Spread your wealth in helpful ways. Why not receive that feel good reward? You’ll make someone else feel great and they might pay it forward.
