Prompt #2018 First Line of the Week – Christopher Barzak

“Of course the house is haunted. Just look at it, need any further proof? Classic look, scraggly trees, and the piece de resistance, the light in the very top window in an otherwise dark house. What more do you want? Ghosts floating out the windows? Eerie noises emanating in the middle of the night?”

Joe just thought everyone knew the story. And everyone believed it. Your typical sad old lady living alone because her family abandoned her, and now she sits in the very peak-roofed attic by the window. The room only illumined by a single candle in the window. Every night at sunset, the candle was lit and everyone knew it was she who lit it.

The story goes that when her family left, they were only supposed to be gone for a house hunting trip in San Francisco, about a week to ten days. It wasn’t that far from where she lived, but being elderly, she stayed home. The family disappeared, presumed drowned in a sightseeing boat in San Francisco Bay. Of course it is well known there are sharks in the bay, but the family and the boat captain disappeared completely. The old lady took the news badly, disbelieving the police reports, and every night she lit a candle in the window to show her family she was still waiting for their return.

That was twenty years ago, and even though the old lady died ten years ago, the light still appears in the attic window every night.

Daily Prompt:  Parlay

I was going to write something about this Prompt, but an article in the local news got my attention instead. An elderly man was shoved onto the pavement by a younger man when the younger man parked in a handicapped spot. This happened one half mile from my home, and at the Safeway grocery store where I shop. I used to go there by myself when I had the scooter. It’s where I fell off that scooter onto the same paved parking lot. A construction worker came right over to help put me back on the scooter, was very concerned that I was okay. As a matter of fact I broke a bone that connects your leg to your hip and ended up in the hospital for a week and rehab for a over a week. That’s another story.

My point is that before I had the scooter, I used a cane. The kids and I used to joke about bad behavior would lead to “the cane treatment”. Of course it was only a joke. But I think now it might be wise to add the cane to my wheelchair. If I had been that elderly person, I could have defended myself with the cane. It may seem comical, like an old cartoon show. But an able bodied person pushing down an elderly man because he was spoken to about parking in a handicapped spot is not right. This (jerk) is being sought by the Wyoming police.

I guess from now on I’ll have to hitch a ride with my grandson to the store. He’s wiry, but strong and I would parlay he would be a great defender if I needed it.

Three Line Tales-Week 57-A Child’s Dream Come True

The girl paused as she came to the sign, “Unicorns This Way”. Her parents were looking the other way and she slipped inside the wooden door.

Once inside, her eyes were filled with all kinds of magical sights. There were little statues of fairies, elves, butterflies, birds, and another favorite, dragonflies. She was mesmerized seeing characters she read about in books. Her favorite, a life size unicorn, stood in the center.

As she reached to touch the unicorn, her parents had joined her. “We knew you would love this.”

Prompt for #SoCS Mar. 4/17-Project

Projecting yourself into a project takes determination, strength, perseverance, and talent.  Whether it be writing, painting, learning something new, or completing a recipe with a delicious result.  It takes work.  The important thing is to start and finish.  I’m not especially good at the finish part.  I have projects I started, got discouraged, or bored, and left them unfinished.  However, I’ve also completed some important ones with great success.  The best thing about all of it was I wasn’t afraid to try.

Prompt-2017-Disheveled

Woke up this morning

My hair was a mess!

Washed it in the shower and started to dress.

My shirt I was pulling over my head

Got caught in my hair, I started to dread

The thought of my long hair being so disheveled

That it’s caught in my shirt.  I was so unsettled

I yanked and pulled, tore and got scissors

Finally untangled, I turned to the mirror

Enough of this long hair, I muttered

Took the shears and my hair I cutted.🙃

Prompt #2017 Word of the Week – Disheveled

Daily Prompt:  Desire

This word desire

Does it mean your heart’s on fire

Or you’re in the mood for something sweet

Maybe a coffee with mocha treat

It means many things.

Feelings that desire brings

Could be romantic

Or simply semantic

Might be feelings so hot

Puts your spouse on the spot

Or lover.  Whatever the case

The heat can’t be erased

Like sweat on your brow

The feeling’s just Wow.

Desire for food

Not to be skewed

I prefer the sensual nature

Of the word’s nomenclature.

Blood Around the Lilies

She could see her reflection in the stream. The ghostly white face was hers, the guilty. She knew she had done it, and her conscious mind let her remember it all. How could a small woman stab a man to death? He was tall and thin, and the blade hit just the right part of his heart to make it stop beating.

He was very much aware of her disappointment, her anger. He hoped this meeting would get her back. He never thought her capable of this. The moment of disbelief shown on his still face. His blood leaked into the stream leaving red pools around the lilies. She stood staring at it, trailing down in the water.

She had no regrets. He deserved what he received, even in her quiet manner. Slipping the knife from her cape pocket while he kissed her, she struck him only once. She studied earlier just where and how she would kill him, knowing exactly where to plunge the blade for the quickest way to stop his heart. She smiled as she saw his brief reaction. Never again would he charm another woman, to use her and leave.

She bent down and washed the weapon before placing it back into her cape. She stood and folded the white scarf around her head, walking away from the stream.

Word Prompt-26-Spring Break

Our family always looked forward to spring break. It was a chance to get away.  It was before cell phones, so you REALLY got to relax. Most of the time we would stay in a hotel with free dinners, or a free condo provided by my husband’s company. This allowed us more money to spend on skiing. There were five of us and at the Colorado ski areas, skiing was expensive. My husband insisted on avoiding the lodges, packing a sandwich in your pocket, and eat it on the lift. That way maximum time was spent skiing.

One particular day, my daughter fell and hurt her ankle, so I accompanied her to the condo and we turned on the tv. President Reagan had just been shot. Naturally it was a shock to my daughter. Not so much to me since I had experienced President Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy’s televised shootings. Sad to say I was not shocked but my daughter was. The rest of the trip was pretty subdued.
