A to Z Challenge-Y for Young

Young, what a word!  Makes me feel older just writing it!  You’re only as young as you feel, not my favorite saying, for sure! There’s young love, animal young, young adults, young cells, young trees. It’s a versatile word used to describe the youth or age of almost anything.

My mind isn’t as old as my body, hopefully never will be.  If Alzheimer’s  disease gets me, I hope I’ll turn into a carefree child, but we don’t really know what someone with A. feels or thinks, do we?  Possibly trapped in a place and can’t figure how to get out?  Torturous.  Well on that happy note, here’s what dictionary.com has to say about young:

According to dictionary.com:
Adjective:

1.being in the first or early stage of life or growth; youthful; not old

2.having the appearance, freshness, vigor, or other qualities of youth

3.of or relating to youth: one’s young days

Noun:

those who have youth; young persons collectively:the educated young of today; a game for young and old

young offspring: a mother hen protecting her young

Idioms:
with young :(of an animal) pregnant.

I saw a video of a Tiger giving birth to twin babies today.  The first one took about three minutes to start breathing normally, but the mother kept trying and finally a squeak was uttered.  The second came out fighting and pushing its tiny paws against mom, anxious to get out.  I don’t know why it was important for me to share this, but it was inspirational to me.  Life goes on.  Thank heavens!

A to Z Challenge – W for Weird

Weird is a weird word.  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it means:
You may know today’s word as a generalized term describing something unusual, but weird also has older meanings that are more specific. Weird derives from the Old English noun wyrd, essentially meaning “fate.” By the 8th century, the plural wyrde had begun to appear in texts as a gloss for Parcae, the Latin name for the Fates—three goddesses who spun, measured, and cut the thread of life. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Scots authors employed werd or weird in the phrase “weird sisters” to refer to the Fates. William Shakespeare adopted this usage in Macbeth, in which the “weird sisters” are depicted as three witches. Subsequent adjectival use of weird grew out of a reinterpretation of the weird used by Shakespeare.

I admit I use weird a lot.  I am not a witch, but I do believe in fate.  When I was a kid, the term “weirdo” meant you were, what else?  Weird!  You know, nutty, flaky, odd, unusual, but not necessarily in a derogatory way.  When I use this word, it’s meant in fun, otherwise it would just be weird.😊

Tale Weaver-117-The Briefcase

“He certainly didn’t look like a thief! Just look at him, suit, tie, nice haircut, you’d think he just stepped out of a GQ magazine! Well I guess you can’t judge a book by its cover…” Margie went on and her sister June was wondering why it mattered so much. He didn’t use a gun or anything, he just took another person’s briefcase.

Margie loved waiting here in the terminal for their flight. Imagining all of the people’s secret lives was fun for her. She would make up stories in her mind about them and of course there were the obvious ones. No mystery involved when seeing a tired mother with two children hanging on her, asking for snacks, while the father carries the baby trying to walk and feed him at the same time. No, not much mystery to them.

June was still observing the young man being handcuffed and led to the back room. She was curious as to the contents of the briefcase he tried to steal. Surely there was an interesting story behind it.

The loudspeaker came on and the announcer tried to reassure everyone to remain calm, everything was handled, it was just a misunderstanding, no need to worry.

“Not to worry? A thief running around and we shouldn’t worry?” Margie was being dramatic as usual. June just nodded. But she was curious about the man and the briefcase.

“Flight 243 for Cincinnati, boarding at Gate 12”. Margie picked up her bag and the two sisters started down the terminal to Gate 12. June looked around and spied the man carrying the same briefcase he “stole” and in line to board a flight for Washington, DC. Now June was more curious than ever. At least she would have a good diary entry tonight.

Daily Prompt:  Blanket or blankie😊

This is a perfect word for today.  My daughter called to ask if I would join her to find a piece of material to sew my granddaughter’s blankie on.  It’s pretty shredded after ten years and she sleeps soundly, so we think sewing the stringy part down on another piece of material and leaving the rest loose for hugging, would be a safe idea.

Of course when we got to the store, there were myriads of lovable soft fabrics to choose from.  We spotted black and white soccer ball fabric which we mated with another soccer printed fabric piece that had pinks of different shades.  Cool!  Of course that was an extra blanket project.  We bought a piece of fleece that was green with her favorite, frogs on it and are backing it with material to match the blankie.

Interesting to note, the store had a sign reading, if you need help ask a helpful team member.  I thought that was funny.  Since we needed the soccer fabric on a high shelf, we needed to ask.  I saw a tall gentleman waiting on another customer.  Rolled up and asked if he was a helpful team member.  He laughed and with a delightful English accent, said yes.  He said they just got that new soccer fabric in.  He was the store manager.  We chatted about soccer and he told us he coached professionally in New York and could make a living doing it, but here you can’t.  He tried coaching on the side but his job gives him no extra time to do it.  He gets nostalgic for it in autumn.  He was an interesting man, and it would be great to have someone like that coach our kids.

To make a short story long, we found the fabric and many other items we would love to have, but were surprisingly frugal🙄, actually we were “end of the month” forced to be! 😂Fabric was half price so we lucked out.

Photo Fiction-85-The Astronaut

She was in the shower. It was going to be a busy day today. Shopping for the big dinner with mom and dad, sisters, family. Trying to concentrate on the menu, she heard nothing outside the roar of the shower stream. Every day she thanked her dad for recommending the more expensive shower . The many jets were soothing for her muscles after her workouts.

Jane was a fairly ordinary woman. After college she found a good job teaching high school Media, Advertising and Public Relations. The students were fairly easy because they enjoyed these subjects. Being young she also fit in well with them. Her interests bordered on the young side also, situation comedies, science fiction, and television series such as Supernatural, and Dr. Who appealed to her.

She dressed and was ready to leave for the supermarket when she heard a crash. Not easily frightened, she went down to investigate. The house was quite old and the basement had lots of antiques, junk as she thought. Renting this p she was told not to go down there because it contained the owner’s stored items. She unlocked the door and went down the steps. She could see a huge mirror in the back was shattered. Besides the broken glass she didn’t see anything else. Thinking it was just old and probably cracked in the first place, she wasn’t particularly surprised. Jane turned to go up the stairs to call her landlord.

As she turned she was surprised to see what looked like an astronaut standing near. She stepped back. She wasn’t scared, really, just curious, wondering if her wild imagination could be seeing things.

He spoke, “Don’t be frightened, I come in peace.”

Jane couldn’t help herself, and started laughing nervously. “Wait till I tell my students!”

100 Word Wednesday

The old building was listing. Many a celebration of homecoming joy or the sadness of goodbyes were seen inside these walls. The more recent tagged graffiti seems to be a mark of good times outside the walls. The anchors are oddly positioned as if they could keep you for only a short time in these confines, as it is with most locations of this genre. The structure had numerous favorite memories of witnessing shy young ladies dancing with fresh-faced recruited sailors, headed for victory on ships docked nearby. Many remembered hopes, tears, laughter, and wishes remain within these walls.
