As I recall, I was about four years old, a ripe age to learn of the bogey man. It was the delight of my elder sister, Mary, who tried to scare me with tales of this creature. I was not a naughty child, but being the youngest, I am sure I received more attention for various reasons. This state resulted in Mary’s jealousy and daring me or telling me to perform certain punishable activities that received my mother’s unwanted discipline.
In this first case of intimidation, I was told by my sister to secretly pick flowers from mother’s flower garden for a bouquet. She watched out so we would not be disturbed. Certainly I was delighted and picked every blooming plant knowing how much my mother would love me for such a gift.
It was only after a no-supper-early bedtime that I realized I had been tricked. Since my sister shared my bedroom, as soon as the lights were out, she told the story of the bogey man who came at night. The open closet door provided the perfect entry for the creature. I covered my head, tried not to listen, and wondered what I had done to deserve that dreaded visit.
It was only after my crying was noticed as our mother checked on us, that she found out the truth. I wondered if the bogey man would be coming after Mary!
