Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt 8-1-20

Words are funny old things

Using new ones’s when fun begins

Today the word is peristeronic

Weird one true I think, even ironic

Since pigeons are such a common bird

Nothing unique except this word

It makes you think, wow, are they so important

Using such a word while most think them abhorrent?

Fandango’s Dog Days?

August 1 is the birthday of one of my oldest friends who still lives in Vermont. She is retired now but all through our lives I have admired her. We met at the ripe old age of three and she always reminded me she was a month and eight days older than me and of course acted the part. I of course had to remind her of that sentence when we turned 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70!😄 Time passes fast.

I haven’t made the trip back east since my father’s funeral in 1996, so have not seen her. She became a widow long before her sister and I did, but the three of us have always been close. I often think I should make a trip to VT while all of us still live, but circumstances aren’t conducive to my traveling.

So, here’s to you, Cricket! Happy Birthday!❤️

Remembering Mom

My heart sheds a tear

When old memories

Come to the surface

Never replaced

They cause a blip in the calm seas of present-day

A small bubble disturbing, sometimes calming

Overshadowing the here and now we choose to live

Always nearby but kept by the side

Until a word or phrase or calendar date

Stirs the mind, and the feeling of a loss or a laugh shared,

returns.

Bueller?

Anyone think it’s strange that Trump replaced the head of USPS with his own handpicked acquaintance last month when realizing people would probably vote by mail-in ballot?

And following these cutbacks for postal workers saying that the ballots are inaccurate and another hoax ? Anyone smelling a rat here?

The fun just keeps on coming.

MLMM First Line Friday – 7-31-20

Lush melodies drew her to the door of the lounge, the friendly smiles enticed her inside. She placed her suitcase by the table in a quiet, perfunctory manner. She glanced sideways around the room, hoping to find a similar looking face. Even though racism was not prevalent in this city, she wanted a few minutes of peace before the train.

Jada was approached by a waitress and ordered a bourbon. She hoped it would calm her nerves and allow her to nap on the journey. The music was soothing and if she and Joe had been here together, they would have danced. Thinking this, she leaned back in the chair and let herself drift to better times–times when she and Joe were happy, and in love.

The waitress interrupted these thoughts as she placed the drink and asked if Jada would care for anything else. No thank you, she replied and looked at her watch. Ten minutes till the train was to leave. She sipped the strong liquid that promised to fortify her. Jada’s knee nudged the suitcase that held only necessary items. She was unready for this new life without Joe, but no other choice was available. Without him she would have to return to her former life.
